Tasers Good or Bad?

What do you guys think of the use of Tasers by Police. I live in Vancouver and Im sure plenty of you have heard the news of the Polish man Tasered by Police in the Vancouver Airport

and after watching the video shot by a witness, I was shocked that they didnt even try to calm the situation down or anything just walked in and like 20 secs later tasered the poor guy

What are your guys' Thoughts?

Secondly, there are no long lasting effects with a tiny little shock. I've been tazed before and its not too terribly bad. Uncomfortable granted, but not deadly like the more permanent bullet hole.

Tasers are good. If you are a cop and you have another option other than killing someone, tasers=awesome. You just get some cops who have issues and use them inappropriately. Plus its a riot seeing someone get tazed...lol

watching videos of people getting hit with a taser peeing themselves silly is AWESOME.


here's some advice so you don't piss yourself silly and end up on a Fox show like "When Tasers Attack!" etc and I end up laughing at you and posting your pee-fest on YouTube:

DO NOT ARGUE WITH POLICE. OBEY THE POLICE. POLICE HAVE GUNS, DOGS, TASERS, RADIOS, HELICOPTERS, AND MUCH EXPERIENCE WITH JERKS LIKE YOU. THEY WILL TASER YOU. IF POLICEMAN SAYS "STOP" THEN YOU STOP AND DO AS POLICEMAN ASKS. ANY NON-COMPLIANCE = YOU GETTING TASERED AND PISSING YOURSELF.

I mean, how hard is it to follow orders when policeman tells you to stop? If you are a foreigner, you had better damn well recognize what police officers in the country you are visiting look like, and you should probably calmly stop and not offer any resistance etc when they are shouting at you. If I was in Poland and their police/spetznaz (heh) officers are screaming at me in polish, I think I'm going to just stand there with my arms raised in the universal "I'm surrendering, please don't taser me" stance.

I still don't understand why people try to run from the police, or try to fight the police, etc. Drunk or drugged people I can understand. Nothing will cure intoxication like getting tasered (or your ass kicked by 4 cops with night sticks and mace).

It's great, as long as you treat it like a weapon (which it is). It should be one step below using a gun in the escalation of force. Unfortunately, they tend to be used whenever the cop feels like it.

1) If used properly, yes. Lots of people get tased multiple times, even after they've stopped resisting, or are physically incapable (like to "don't tase me, bro" guy, who was tased after he was on the ground and handcuffed).
2)It's not totally safe. It's probably 99% safe, but it's those outliers that require caution.

Tasers are good... they're a lot better than lead and safer than rubber bullets.... and if it usually comes down to you getting tasered more likely than not you were doing something wrong and I rather be tasered than shot or even hit with the club

I second this. Tazering someone is sooooo much better than shooting them. You get to put them through pain and you don't have to worry about killing them :D (sometimes)

If you watch the "dont tase me bro" vid, you see they used the taser properly. They had him on the ground and he was flailing. while he was flailing, his limbs were getting dangerously close to officer's faces. I would rather tase someone than have them break my nose.

yes taser are better than a bullet but honestly, there are way to many cops giving tasers a bad name, Like I stated in my original post. the incident at Vancouver Airport the Polish dude was tired, lost and Frustrated had been standing around for 16 hours, and when the police show up they taser him... no real reason. Go figure

very simply, cooperate with the police and you won't get tasered. It doesn't matter if you are currently flailing, if they think you might "snap" because you're excited and yelling at them, they have every right to do it. They have to keep control of the situation, and if it's a taser rather than a bullet, it's all good.

To begin with there was a lot of controversy when they first implemented it. Not everyone was happy with it and many police departments had to go through numerous demonstrations to convince people it was a good idea.

Tasers give police a false sense of saftey.
Tasers CAN kill a person with heart problems

They give Police a reason to be lazy. Use your brains and training to calm the situation. Don't just walk in and taser the guy cuz its conveniently easy and so-called "safe" (which evidently is not after the guy in vancouver died).

The video clearly shows that he showed signs of surrender but was promptly tased despite the fact.

Other examples are that of a 5 year old kid getting tased by police in an inner city in the united states. Honestly, a 5 year old child is a threat to a trained police officer that a taser is neccessary to be used? Most people here say that a taser is a safer step below a gun... (so do you mean to say that if this situation was 10 years ago where tasers were rare that these kids would have been subdued with a gun shot?) probably not... 10 years ago a well trainined Police Officer would have used critical thinking and problem solving skills to resolve the situation without having to use any weapon of any kind especially on a 5 year old child.

Tasers = Lazy Police
