Allright. The Best of the Rest battle of One Hit Wonders (1HW) is on.
The first battle is up here:
http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79111
There will be two rounds. In the first round there will be eight battles with ten songs each. All eight winners will advance to the second round, which will pit the eight winners plus two wild cards (second highest vote getters) against each other.
PLEASE NOTE: In these battles you can vote for as many songs as you like.
If there are ties, both songs advance.
To me the fun of this battle is sharing a bunch of music and artists. So hope you enjoy the tunes.
I'll update this thread as new polls are opened and as polls are closed and winners announced.
One final word -- I tried to avoid the "so and so is not really a one hit wonder" arguments, but I'm sure there will still be some. I used the same wiki pages Sayburr did for his excellent battle. But I did take into account that some artists are italicized on those pages to indicate they had success outside of the Hot 100 chart. For the most part, I excluded italicized artists. I did make exceptions, though. In the end, my criterion was whether or not there are other songs that quickly come to mind when you think of that artist -- if not, then it seems pretty clear that there is one song that made their reputation. And that seems like the definition of a one hit wonder to me.
Thanks to all those who contributed in other threads to helping determine who should count as a one hit wonder.

The second battle is up!!
Follow the link to check out the choices and make your vote!
http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79351
Lots of really cool instrumentals in this round -- some precursors to the Ventures, Dick Dale, Duane Eddy and others.
Reminder this is a follow up to the battle of one hit wonders that Sayburr did such a great job running. There were so many good tunes he couldn't include them all. There are some really awesome tunes in this battle, so I hope you'll check 'em out.

The next battle in the "best of the rest" one hit wonder thread is up here:
http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79798
I put these out in rapid succession because we're now getting to some great rock tunes -- the 50's and early 60's were dominated by pop. I'll be waiting a day or two before I put the next batch out.
Be sure to check these songs out -- there are some really great tunes in this batch.

Fogey I don't think people are intrested in this.
i definitely am.
i've been a little slow to respond and vote because there are a lot of videos to take in at once, and i want to give them all a fair shake, but so far these have been more up my alley than the other battle threads.

You may be right -- but there is a chance it's just getting lost in the shuffle.

Hope you enjoy.

You may be right -- but there is a chance it's just getting lost in the shuffle. Its getting lost in the shuffle for me... plus, I don't post on weekends, so I am playing catch-up right now.
I prefer this to any other "Battle" because I get to hear music I have not heard before... exploring new music is what I love to do best.

I'm really looking forward to hearing what you think of these songs, Sayburr. There was just too much good material to pass up.
And I definitely think this thread is all about checking out tunes from lesser known acts.

Appreciate the support guys. Any which way, the battle is going to go on. All the work is done. The lineup has been picked, vids located, everything, so it's happening.
I have decided to streamline things, though, so I have made the following cuts:
Ten Years After I'd Love to Change the World 1971
Richie Havens Here Comes the Sun 1971
JJ Cale Crazy Mama 1972
Emerson Lake and Palmer In the Beginning 1972
Mott the Hoople All the Young Dudes 1972
Dr. John Right Place Wrong Time 1973
Minnie Riperton Lovin You 1975
Roxy Music Love is the Drug 1976
Randy Newman Short People 1977
Walter Egan Magnet and Steel 1978
Chris Rea Fool If You Think It's Over 1978
Nick Lowe Cruel to be Kind 1979
Rush New World Man 1982
Donald Fagen IGY 1982
Rainbow Stone Cold 1982
Marc Cohn Walking in Memphis 1991
Haddaway What is Love 1993
Beck Loser 1994
Presidents of USA Peaches 1996
Butthole Surfers Pepper 1996
Ben Folds Five Brick 1998
Eagle-Eye Cherry Save Tonight 1999
Jimmy Eat World The Middle 2002
Bone Crusher Never Scare 2003
Liz Phair Why Can't I? 2003
John Legend Ordinary People 2005
Papa Roach Scars 2005
James Blunt You're Beautiful 2006
Matisyahu King Without a Crown 2006
Snow Patrol Chasing Cars 2006
Daniel Powter Bad Day 2006
Some of these I had already announced. Most of the cuts are because the acts are pretty well established aside from the major hit, even if that is the one song they are most commonly known by. In some cases, though, I was just kind of meh about the tune and decided to trim.
If anybody feels really strongly that one these cuts should be in, let me know.
I have located vids for most of these already as well, so if there's one anyone is curious about just let me know that, too.

The second battle, from '60 - '63 will end tonight. This is the battle that has a bunch of instrumentals in it.

Wow... I missed Mott the Hoople, one of my favorite bands of all time, in the first round? I would like to see how they fair against others...
And please, put Rainbow in there, I loved the band after Dio left and would like to see how that song does also.

I put it in. To make room for it, I took this tune out, which is one of the great ballads -- and I like the idea of having songs that made the charts in languages other than English. Still, realistically, it probably didn't stand much chance against the competition this time out.
Mocedades, "Eres Tu," 1974

So --
What do you all think about we propose a One Hit Wonder DLC pack?
Most packs are like 3-6 songs, and I would think we could easily come up with 6.
Choices could come from Sayburr's list and maybe this one -- but we should probably screen out the ones that are almost certain to produce the most argument (Hendrix, Dead, Derek and Dominos, ....).

yeah, abnormality's the death metal bonus band that's got everyone all upset.
i was saying that bubble puppy and dexy's midnight runners (along with the majority of the other bands that have been in these polls) would make for nice contrast alongside abnormality. :)

I think 60's-70's in one, 80's and 90's in the other probably makes more sense.
Should I go ahead and post the next battle just so you can see the rest of the 70's? At least one song in there I think would be totally awesome for Rock Band.
