View Full Version : Do you think Slipknots' masks are cool?
I've wondered this for a long time. Do people actually think that the members of Slipknot have cool masks? I don't think so. It makes them look dumb in my opinion. What do you guys think? I'd especially like to hear from Slipknot fans.

Meh, I'm in between. They are a bit gimmicky.

I think that's the thing that bothers me about them the most.
Maybe not, but almost.

Yea they are but I have no problem with that. Bands with gimmicks don't bother me as long as there is some music to back it up.
I guess the masks are all right, I've never paid much attention to them or their designs.

Slipknot's masks suck. This is what a band with good costumes looks like:

Lordi's bringing back shock rock!

No, they're just a gimmick to make them "unique". I hate them and believe that they don't reflect the music the band plays. If they were playing death or black metal, it would make more sense, but they aren't, and I find them disgusting.

It was a clever thing to do to get noticed, with the orange suits and all, but these guys seriously need to evolve if they want to be taken seriously. I don't agree with people that say they are completly talentless, but they brought it on themselves by clinging on this juvenile gimmick and shallow music. Sometimes I suspect people are angered with them because they hate to admit that they once saw fantastic potential in them. It might be too late now.

As a gimmick it might have worked at first, but after it spread and every nu-metal band and their mothers were wearing masks and/or alien facial prosthetics it grew tired very fast.
I guess it was a cute evolution of KISS' makeup in the 70s combined with GWAR's more advanced costumery, but I think Slipknot in particular need to move past it and drop the latex. Especially now that the 'mystery' of their identities is dead and buried anyhow.

I think it's as much Roadrunner's fault as Slipknot's, especially at this point. After Mushroomhead (who had the whole mask, jumpsuit, pig bassist thing going on well before Slipknot) turned down Roadrunner's deal, Roadrunner added Slipknot to fill the void. Where Mushroomhead was innovative with their fusion of Nü Metal, Shock Rock, Turntables, and alternative, Slipknot simply filled Roadrunner's need for a band with that style of music. Because of their willingness to sign a ****ty record deal with a big label, they got better promotion and ended up surpassing Mushroomhead in popularity.
Masks and image are an important aspect of shock rock. Unfortunately, shock rock is often so much about the image and the shock value, that it can sustain inferior music (such as Marilyn Manson or Slipknot). While fore-runners Alice Cooper and KISS paved the way with a fusion of good music and shock value, many modern acts increase the shock value but forget about the music. Without the masks, Slipknot (or GWAR or Lordi) would fade into obscurity.
At least GWAR and Lordi have comedic value and are genuinely entertaining though.

I was going to say yeah until I saw that picture of Lordi. Compared to them Slipknot is just outclassed in the so-ridiculous-its-awesome costume department.

I would agree with this. Once the "secret identity" is revealed it's pretty much over. That was the coolest thing about KISS in the 70's. They worked damn hard to keep their faces hidden from the public out of make up. It was great! You always wondered what they really looked like. great gimmick worked to prefection.

The idea of wearing masks is stupid, especially as others have mentioned they've all been seen unmasked.
However, the thread title is "Do you think Slipknots' masks are cool?"
And yes, a couple of them are pretty cool if you wanted to wear them for halloween or something.
But for a band? It's lame.

Regardless of how I feel about their music, I like the design of their masks (even if they are "rip-offs" of GWAR and Mushroomhead), so I voted yes.

I should have put a different title for this thread because what I meant to say was "Do people take Slipknot seriously due to their masks".

I was being sarcastic =p I knew exactly what you meant. Basically, I like a couple of the designs, but it's still a stupid idea.

Haha this could be an entire other thread, but I think that Lordi blows GWAR away too, even if GWAR came first.

Say that to Orderus Urungus' (http://meltdown.wsup.org/GWAR1.JPG) 43 billiontry old face. Or more importantly to his penis, the cuttlefish of Cthulu.
Or are you too afraid that Balsac the Jaws of Death (http://i.pbase.com/o4/40/326640/1/63512553.ZWRkPaAH.REKGWAR02.jpg) might come for your, umm... well... ;)
