View Full Version : Transporting Rock Band on a plane (HALP)

I'm gonna be in another state the day Rock Band drops, so I clearly have a problem. By hook or crook, I plan on owning Rock Band when it releases, but my problem is that I have to fly back from that state, and there's no way I'm gonna be able to transport that enormous box.

Now, what I've come up with thus far is to disassemble the drums and pack them with my clothes as cushion. The mic and the game itself won't be a problem, since they're small anyways. Which, of course, brings me to the guitar.

If I check one big bag, I should be able to carry a bag that fits under the seat, I should be able to put the guitar in some sort of slim box (Maybe kinda like the GH2 box) and put it in the overhead compartment, right?

If you have any other sly ideas, please share. :D

Put it all in a large-ish box with a gun in it (unloaded) so they have to keep it watched over at the front of the plane. ;)

why don't you just put the box in cargo?

Is that really how it goes? I always thought that transporting a firearm, licensed or not, over state lines makes it illegal, since your gun may be licensed in one state, but not in the other (see Tank Johnson)

They actually do stuff like that? I'd do it if I had access to a gun.

I would, but I'm already gonna be checking one bag, and they charge the hell out of you for checking more than one thing. At least, if my memory isn't failing me.

Yeah.. Watched over. That's it..

Seriously though, if you can find a bag big enough you can just drop the game off in the bag at baggage check before you board. You'll have to wait when you get off but it will let you get going. Either that or you can drive home in the rental car. Up to you.

EDIT:
You can always go to the local UPS/DHL/FedEx and overnight the game to your house if you can't get it on the plane.

You're allowed to check two bags per person, usually up to 50lbs each. You can just pack it in the retail shipping box and check it. You might want to disguise it though so someone doesn't walk off with it. Maybe find a more non-descript box to pack it in.

Passengers check these kinds of boxes all the time. It shouldn't be a problem.

If you unsure just call and check with your airline. They'll be happy to explain their policy for you.

If you keep the head of the guitar disassembled, that should shorten it by a good 4-5 inches.

I would also put it in a cardboard box with some extra padding and check it.

I did kung fu for a while an once we made a big ass box to transport our kwan-do's, swords, sticks, etc. when going to to a tournament, and had no problems. This was a 9 ft long box.

You can only carry on one small bag and a laptop. Maybe two bags, if one is small enough.

Your best best is to have your carry on bag, and have a larger bag and put it through the baggage claim. My idea would be carry the game, mic, drums, and guitar in one bag if you can, and carry that on the plane with you. Don't put the bag with the game in it through the baggage claim, put the bag of clothes through the baggage claim. Who cares if they lose your clothes, but if they lose RB, that's a problem.

It disassembles? I thought that was only the GH3 one. Thanks guys! =D I have hope that I'll be rocking as soon as possible now.

Nope, its only the headstock of the guitar that comes off. The GH3 guitar has the whole neck come off. When you get the game in the box the guitar doesn't have the headstock on, and once you put it on, it will NOT fit back into the box. You cannot take the headstock off either. Sorry :(

I seriously could not fathom taking the full RB bundle on a plane by any manner.

As a carry on, it's massive and would have to pass the paranoid scrutiny of the TSA.

As cargo, it would risk loss, theft, or damage.

How about taking the bundle to your local FedEx/UPS shop, and mailing it to yourself ?

Whatever you decide, good luck.

It's still a lot better than I was expecting. :D

Depending on how much space everything ends up taking up, I'll either pack my 360 in a secure back pack, fit all the Rock Band stuff in another bag, and check my clothes, or I'll put Rock Band in a nondescript brown box or a bag with my clothes to cushion the stuff, and check that.

Either way, the important thing is that I've got hope now.

I'm going to be in a similar predicament on Saturday. I fly down to the USA from Canada to visit the In-Laws for Thanksgiving, and while I'm there, I'll be getting Rock Band via online order from GameStop. When I return on Saturday my chief concern is whether or not I can bring it with me as carry on luggage (doubtful) and if not, whether I can put enough wrapping and "fragile" stickers on it that a) it doesn't get carelessly hurled onto the plane and b) it doesn't conveniently "get lost" when on the off chance that an unscrupulous Canadian gamer happens to work in baggage handling at the airport, sees it, and decides it "liberate it."

Hopefully I'm just being paranoid about all this.

I thought of mailing it to myself, but wouldn't it cost a pretty good amount to do so? Plus, I'm returning on a Sunday, so I wouldn't be getting it until Monday, and I'm pretty sure someone around here steals a magazine I subscribe to when it arrives, so I shudder to think of what would happen if I had a massive box sitting outside my apartment.

Check the box with the airline. Don't try taking it on the plane unless you want to completely rip your bag apart and run each instrument through the X-ray separately. Even then it may be given some extra scrutiny. You'd not only be putting yourself through a hassle, but holding up everyone else in line behind you.

I wouldn't try to bring it as a carry on.

http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,1032,00.html?jumpLink=%2Fted-check

Carry-on bag dimensions should not be more than 9" x 14" x 22" (length + width + height)

Niether the guitar or the drums fit into the max size carry on window and they do check for this at security and/or the gate. If security/the airline tells you that you'll have to check it you'll be in a pickle if its not boxed up in proteted way.

Put it in a dress suit travel cover/case. You can give it to the stewardess at the front of the plane and she can hang it in the wardrobe for you.

There is 10 character minimum for a post. All he had to say was "Win.", and so he padded it by saying "(10 char)" to cross the minimum.
