I'm going to be out next week, so I'll go ahead and get the rest of these one hit wonders out there for people to check out. I'll give an extra long time on these, because there's been a lot to check out.
I think this is probably the best collection of songs yet. Some of my favorite songs period are in this grouping.
Once again, you can vote for as many as you like.
ENJOY!
Bubble Puppy, "Hot Smoke and Sassafras ," 1969
Awesome riff! I didn't remember this one so well. Thanks to Schiz for jogging my memory. I think this needs to be in Rock Band!

The Youngbloods, "Come Together," 1969
And this one does too -- surprisingly nice guitar work but mainly what a gorgeous vocal. How many songs are there in Rock Band that you really want to sing along to? Wouldn't this be one? One of the great 60's anthems.

Edison Lighthouse, "Love Grows," 1970
I'm a sucker for an awesome pop song, and they just don't come much hookier than this. Cool opening riff. But mainly -- you just gotta sing along!

Mungo Jerry, "In the Summertime," 1970
This hit is really hard to describe. Kind of a cross of jugband music and pop. Hookey as hockey sticks. Great summer vibe. And just plain fun.

Brewer and Shipley, "One Toke Over the Line," 1971
What great harmonies on this ode to sitting in a railway station (j/k). I wonder if this would have even gotten on the airwaves in the era of Bush administration of radio and TV? Thank goodness it hit during the Nixon era, when J Edgar Hoover was more worried about who might be looking in his closet (and trying on his designer pumps ).

Mott the Hoople, "All the Young Dudes," 1972
It's almost not fair putting this in here, is it? It's kinda like going up against Layla or All Along the Watchtower -- but then Come On Eileen pulled the upset, so anything can happen, huh? One of the all-time great Bowie tunes but not done by Bowie. Mott had a moderately successful career, but is there any doubt this is the song they are known for?

King Harvest, "Dancin' in the Moonlight," 1973
Another great pop song -- we don't tend to think of there being a lot of those in the 70's, but especially in the early part there were, before Disco doomed the Pop audience.

Rick Derringer, "Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo," 1974
Riff rich. Great guitar work. Sweet hook. Another Rock Band DLC must have? I think so! Rick had success in other outfits, but this is his only success as the leader of the outfit.

Kraftwerk, "Autobahn," 1975
Well, let's just say it won't when any prizes for lyrics. But what a bombshell of a sound. Lots of people dissed Kraftwerk for having no musical ability and just relying on electronica. But it takes real musical talent to turn all that machinery into something so evocative and hooky. Huge influence on where the sound of pop/rock would go in the 80's.

Elvin Bishop Band, "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," 1976
Like Rick, Elvin was in a number of successful outfits as a supporting member, but I'm not sure anyone was prepared for the success he got as a bandleader with this great tune. Love the guitar solo. Great, great song.

A lot of good ones in this round. It's getting tougher to narrow down a top 3.
1. Get Together (Heard this one quite a few times growing up but it never clicked. The Forrest Gump movie definitely resurrected this one for me and now it ranks up there on my list of all time favorites).
2. Rock & Roll, Hoochie Koo (Always loved the guitar work in this one).
3. Dancin' In The Moonlight (Think I heard this one right about the same time I heard "Smoke From A Distant Fire" by the Sanford/Townsend Band. For some reason both songs have always stuck and been favorites).

Bubble Puppy… I have never heard that song before, very catchy guitar.
The Youngbloods. Come Together is one of the best chorus ever. I have to put a vote in for this one.
Edison Lighthouse. I remember this song, mostly because of the name of the band. I thought it was cool, but I never really liked the song. Mostly because of the production with the strings being louder than the vocals…
Mungo Jerry… glad you kept this one in. I really like this song. The piano in the song is what makes the song, a simple ragtime tune. While I like the song, I don’t think it’s the best of the songs, a very niche song so I didn’t vote for it
Brewer and Shipley… a very catchy song, one that gets a vote from me
Mott the Hoople… This is one of my favorite of all time bands, they wrote some great albums. Its just too bad their most famous song was written by someone else. I have to vote for this one.
King Harvest… To me, King Harvest was trying to rip off The Band’s sound and make it poppy instead of inovative. Because of my bias towards this song I have never liked the song. I can’t say it’s a bad song because it is very well written and catchy, but every time I hear it I think “Rip off band”.
Rick Derringer… This is the best song on this list. The guitar under the lyrics just brings so much power to the song. Yeah, gotta vote for this. And yeah, it needs to be on Rock Band
Kraftwerk… This is the album that got me on a “new age” kick there for a while. Shadowsphere and the like… just a nice sounding, calming song.
Elvin Bishop… I very nice song, the melody is simple but is sung with conviction. The vocalist is weak, but the addition of the backup singers at the perfect moment made this one of the best produced songs ever. I had to vote for this one…

Mott the Hoople wins against a really impressive list of songs, IMO. One or more of the others could wind up being wild cards in the final.
Thanks for listening, guys!
