View Full Version : My Canada Rocks DLC Pack Proposition

Well, there is already Rush on the main setlist, but I think it would be great to have a DLC package that featured Canadian bands that aren't widely known outside of the great white north. Perhaps they could do it for a Canada Day weekend celebration or something.

I have selected from a wide variety of genres, all Canadian bands, all songs I think would make ideal RB songs for all parts. Especially if you're with HMX, make sure to give them a look.

I will wikipedia and youtube link as much as I can so you can get a taste:

The Tragically Hip (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tragically_Hip):
The seminal Canadian rock band, general rock late 80s to present -- everybody knows them up here, most people like them. They've had a long career, and personally, I like everything up to Day For Night better than the albums that followed DFN.

Little Bones (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K43ZriYuXyo): Great song for RB, strong parts for bass and guitar (solo would be fun), good vocals and straight-forward drumming. Ignore the first few seconds of the youtube vid.

At the Hundredth Meridian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngP9_AjV6Fc): Another good one, give it a listen.

Grace, Too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nrtcXtMsZU): Really anything off the Day for Night album would be good, but this one was played on SNL.

-*-*-

The Guess Who: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guess_Who)
A Canadian rock band from the classic rock section, 70s. Perhaps the first Canadian band that got big in the U.S. without moving out of Canada to do it.

American Woman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLYLLxjX3Yw): Great song, great canidate for RockBand in my opinion, the bass/drums pop along nicely, and the filtered guitar parts are just plain neat. This seems like a song with great 'band moments' to me.

No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iy75uEPaXeE): Sorry for the live cut, the album version is a little nicer.

-*-*-

April Wine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Wine):
More Canadian rock crom the 70s. Included primarliy because one song would be so awesome for Rockband.

Sign of the Gypsy Queen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l38CIbuOPHw): There are other good April Wine songs, but this one would be friggin' epic for RB. You have to listen to this one.

-*-*-

The Tea Party (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tea_Party):
A more modern band, they started with heavy Led Zep/70s rock influence, combined with middle eastern imagry and some mysticism, later they refined a style more on their own, and then more reccently sold out and started making crappier music. Albums up to and including "Tranmission" were great. After that, not so much.

Save Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTnq0goeR04): Great song, the drums would be a challenge for certain. Note the bowing of the guitar,

The Bazzar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCye7v79Tz0): Another good one with the backing sitar sound, the bass is pretty far out front on this one as well.

Temptation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFzQX2i6mwo): From their last solid album, and the first one they started expermenting with electronic aspects while maintaining their middle-eastern flavour. The album has some other RB-friendly highlights, but this one gets my nod.

-*-*-

Sloan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloan_%28band%29):
Catchy 'power pop' Canadian band. Not my favourite, but they have tonnes of fans. Very 90s, very upbeat, great party songs.

Money City Maniacs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEpSecRuhmc): You gotta love any song that starts with an air-raid siren. Great element rock sound. Sorry for the fuzzy Youtube quality, its much clearer on the album. You couldn't go by a patio party in the 90s w/o hearing this one.

Underwhelmed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgB4kNmvzr4): Their big hit IIRC, sorry for the buzzy live festival cut, but its hard finding videos for relatively obscure Canadian bands.

-*-*-

I Mother Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Mother_Earth) and Our Lady Peace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_Peace):
IME and OLP are both alt-rock bands from the 90s. I would place less emphasis on them than the other bands I mentioned, but I'm sure people would like to hear from them too. I liked both these bands' first albums, not sure what happend after that.

One More Astronaut (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cZT4vYiMxU) - IME: Their breakout single. Good song to rep 90s Canadian alt rock. Good song for RB.

Rain Will Fall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxfVaufgdaE) - IME: Good bass song, interesting break.

Naveed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mYQfrEe5iI)- OLP: Good song off their first album, instantly recognizable to anybody who was listening to the radio in the early 90s in Canada. Dig that bass into.

Starseed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5u8Han69a8)- OLP: Another one from their first album, rocks along nicely. Probably a better RB song than Naveed.

-*-*-

Other random Canadian songs to consider, I think they'd all make great RB songs, but I am just gonna rush through the rest of the list:

Age of Electric - Remote control http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtG4FfXB7zk

Headstones - Settle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YCyA7RTrtY

The Watchmen - Stereo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hlwcFGqVK0

Bif Naked - I Love Myself Today (note, female vox) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdpJh_zc6k8

Rusty - Misogyny http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu1Yfc9Gp6Q

Cowboy Junkies - A Common Disaster (note female vox) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjKEkDKaa1k

BTO - Taking Care of Business http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-KepL8gRXA

I swear I'm one of the few Canadians out there who can't stand Tragically Hip for some reason. Really good calls on I Mother Earth and Our Lady Peace though, though not sure we'd ever get any Canadian bands as DLC.

I Mother Earth - Levitate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVW6bYZyHA4&feature=related) - Would be another choice I'd really like to see. Think it'd be fun.

Dude, are you from NB? I'm originally from there, live in Ottawa now. Tracy Starr are a good rock band. I featured them on my podcast last year. I was going to post them earlier today but figured no one knew them. Right on!

Tracy Star on CRS (http://capitalrockshow.ca/blog/2006/08/ep054-tracy-starr.html)

I try to feature as many rocking NB bands as I can!

I'd like to see New Orleans is Sinking form the Tragically Hip as a DLC song

And isn't Steppenwolf Canadian?

SteppinRazor
11-19-2007, 03:36 PM
Steppenwolf is kinda Canadian, yeah. I was going to include "The Pusher (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpoEmlxUPeQ)" but I already threw in a buncha classic rock and wanted some more modern.

Great suggestions Rock_Starman in particular, I almost included Moist, Treble Charger and Econoline Crush. (though I'm not a fan of Treble Charger myself).

Arcade Fire and Stars didn't make my list because I'm unfamiliar with them. Haven't listened to anything but the classic rock stations on the radio for years. But I'm sure they are worthy inclusions to represent a broad spectrum of Canadian rock.

I would definantly like Finger Eleven - Above (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXqhC3qHN1c) and another band that hasn't been mentioned is Big Sugar, the songs Digging a Hole (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9FqCcT2cNs) and Nicotina (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HxrpjXjCJU)might be solid inclusions.

How could I forget to mention Neil Young!? I must be going crazy.

I would love Keep on Rocking, that would be the best overall NY choice I think, very accesible, and a great rock urgency to it.

On the other hand, rather than urgent or widely known, I can think a different song I'd also love to see get the RB treatment, it is long, complex, and more laid back.

I think Down By The River (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVJYAg2L72w) would be mind-blowing for RB, have you ever really listened to the two guitar parts and the bass part interacting on that one? That'd be a great RB track. I would be a really hard song though, being as long and complex as it is.

But man, it would a great song for a full band to just groove to. Get lost in its flow and hypnotic laid-backness. Its nice to have something slower paced for later in the night, and not just 'cranked to 11' rock all the time (just most of the time).

Fatal_Exception
11-19-2007, 05:10 PM
Down by the River is an awesome Neil Young track. It's not one of his biggest hits, but I'd also love to play it. Of course if they wanted to go more mainstream they could pull Cinnamon Girl from the same album.

Also, I wanted to second the DFA 1979 vote. True it's missing an instrument, but it would make up for it by being 10 times as fun for everyone else. Don't know if I could pull off the Sebastien Grainger drum/singing combo though... As for specific songs, it's hard to chose. How about all of "Heads Up" and "You're a Woman, I'm A Machine?" :D

Did some more thinking and thought up some more recent stuff to round out the classics.

Tokyo Police Club - The Nature Of the Experiment (The guitar could just play the keyboard part without sounding cheezy IMO)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPY5vTbLhs8

The Dears - End Of A Hollywood Bedtime Story
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALA8bszA0L0

Metric - Monster Hospital (Metric is definitely a top choice if they want to add more female vox)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bZCz0HtG_Q

DFA1979 - Pull Out (I think they're now obligatory in every post I write)

How about some Voodoo Thing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VKy6HANjxc)?

Or Just Came Back (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJyprEtjAiI&feature=related)

Epic guitar parts, great drum and bass lines, good, easy to sing vocals. They're both great party songs. What more could you ask for?

Hmm... Canadian music that would work with "Rock Band" while avoiding any mention of Nickelback...

(Admit it -- they fall right into the desired demographic, no matter our personal tastes.)

"Unsound" -- The Headstones
"New Orleans is Sinking" -- Tragically Hip
"My Old Self" -- Wide Mouth Mason
"Underwhelmed" or "Money City Maniacs" -- Sloan

"Having an Average Weekend" -- Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet (instrumental)

And, if HMX wanted to give us a really big hug, remix the HNIC theme song OR give us some Stompin' Tom!

Isn't Rush Canadian?

SteppinRazor
11-22-2007, 06:21 AM
Indeed so. But Rush has already been in the game twice and there is already a massive thread here asking for more Rush. I didn't think repeating it again was necessary.

I just saw another thread asking for Bare Naked Ladies. Now, personally, I hate BNL because I was working retail when that "One Week" song was a single, and it was looped as like every fourth song on the wuss-rock satalite radio station that was always on (which was piped even louder in the back where I worked).

But thats my beef against the band, if I hadn't been forced to hear that song 6 or 7 times a shift for three months, I would probably just be 'not into the band'.

In a Canada Rocks pack, I'm sure there are a large number of BNL fans who would dig it. So I'll mention them, but not bother digging up youtube links.

SteppinRazor

So, how about this for a hardcore Canadian reference -- IMO, this is so lame that its good.

You'd pretty much have to be Canadian and probably at least in your mid-twenties to remember this:

Lisa Lougheed - "Run With Us (theme for The Raccoons)" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLVe1NkQA78)

The Raccoons were like the most Canadian cartoon ever made, and they had this new-wave style intro theme music, which was really odd for a cartoon, the song itself charted in Canada and a few other places.

I had forgotten all about this show until I saw the advertisements for "Teletoon Retro". I read the wikipedia page today, it mentioned the song, and there it is on youtube.

Fun female vocals, pretty decent guitar solo (if a little sparse through the body of the song), drums would be pretty basic, and the bass might end up playing the synth-bass in the intro, but it sounds like a real bass kicks in.

But, I don't know, this song is totally a guilty pleasure right now, and as an oddball pick for a Canadian DLC pack, well, if you *****ed it, it would bleed maple syrup.

Anyways, lamest ever, or so lame its good?

I'm disappointed in the lack of Matthew Good fans amongst my Canadian brethren.

But, as I mentioned in another thread before being helpfully pointed to this one, there are a LOT of Matthew Good songs that could make it in Rock Band with awesome possibilities.

Weapon - First and foremost. Truly an amazing track. A nice quiet solo (semi)acoustic guitar and vocals leads into a kick-ass rock section about halfway through the song. Not only are the vocals awesome (as they are on most MG songs), but the guitar is pretty cool, and there's some awesome drum stuff too.

Everything Is Automatic - A bit more straightforward than later stuff, EiA is still a great example of an MG rock song.

Hello Time Bomb - Arguably the biggest Matthew Good Band hit, HTB is "heavier" than EiB, but still awesome. The only problem I can possibly foresee is the crazy "guitar" solo, which really isn't a guitar at all, but still awesome.

Born Losers - From MG's new album Hospital Music, this isn't my first choice (Devil's In Your Details would be, just for straight up four person rockage), but it's the single, and it's good.

Apparitions - A slower song, but no less awesome for it, Apparitions starts off pretty quiet, but builds up well towards the end. The guitar solo is a little lacking, being pretty simple, but the song is no worse off for it.

Strange Days - Slower like Apparitions, Strange Days is built the same way, but without a really standout guitar solo. Somewhat calmer, is what I'd say.

Symbolistic White Walls - A great example of complicated lyrics in a fairly straightforward song, this song is a good showcase of Matt's range in vocals, as well as a good listen just for some pretty basic stuff like using a bass guitar as a rhythm section while also giving it a semi-solo.

Rico - Not safe for kids due to lyrics, Rico is a great song for drums. Only problem is the second lead-in to the chorus, with repeated use of the F-bomb.

The Future Is X-Rated - You'd think, based on the name, that this song wouldn't be particularly safe for kids, but it's actually not bad. The worst it gets is "Goddamn". There's a whole phone sex thing in the middle that might not be good, though. It's a great, driving song, though it lacks a specific guitar solo.

Avalanche - Not a single, but an amazing song nonetheless. Takes a while to get into itself, but once is starts going, it's great. If I recall, Matt himself considers this a song he can't really do justice to, but he thinks it is one of his best, regardless.

Those are my picks, anyway. Weapon definitely tops the list as just straight-out awesome, but I will take any and everything on this list.

Dude, SteppinRazor, your Canadian music DLC idea is excellent. I'm not Canadian, but I'm a big Hip fan. I'd love to see such songs as:

Hip Songs:

New Orleans in Sinking (it's classic and has an awesome main riff)
Lonely End of the Ring (new, but is a vicious little tune)
The Wherewithal (rocks)
Tiger the Lion (again, it rocks)

I could go on forever, but these I think would suit RB nicely.

Seriously Harmonix, what do I have to do to get some Hip DLC?

I for ONE would LOVE to see Canadian Groups featured on DLC for Rockband
but that DAY will happen after NFL Madden has an DLC expansion for CFL teams...
which is sadly...

NEVER!

How much of a fight was it for Mass Effect CE which was made in the great white north to be even availible here! FAT chance in any game developers putting content out JUST for Canadian consumers.

Now I know April Wine has already been mentioned, namely "Song of the Gypsy Queen", and they are awesome. Coming from someone who has seen them live within the last year, and they were as awesome as ever, into their late 50's/early 60's...I would highly recommend their song "I Like To Rock". I heard it on the radio today and thought "I would love to play this song in RB" :D

Here's a vid...and their song "Roller", which is also good, at the end of it. I'm sticking with I Like To Rock as my choice though. :D

Definitely need Sloan (The Other Man, Everything You've Done Wrong), and Matthew Good Band (Strange Days, Hello Time Bomb, Giant, Load Me Up). It's kinda surprising how little has been tapped since a lot of Canadian bands really include a lot of good drum and bass lines for their songs and would fit in beautifully in to Rock Band.

Finally, found someone suggesting Matthew Good... Matthew Good has so many songs well suited for this game and would be a dream to play them.

the tragically hip would be really cool, i didn't even think about them. they're one of those bands that remind me of somebody else, except that i'm never quite sure who it is, but it sounds good. and how about more new pornographers? i feel like i'm the only person who like electric version, but that song kicks ass. and finally, the guess who. there isn't any reason for them not to be in rock band. even though i've only ever seen greatest hits albums by them, and it appears to be the only thing they ever released, i want american woman in rock band.

Good call on the suggestions so far, especially Our Lady Peace, Moist, Sloan and Big Sugar.

The New Pornographers: Bleeding Heart Show...this song would be an absolute blast to play in Rock Band...especially on drums.

This is the best music video I've seen, and it's not even official:

So little Love for Sum 41....the cover sucked in GH1, but the song was easily one of my faves to play (Sure, I am a fanboy, but lemme alone, I got a lot of respect for Sum 41)

But look at it this way, a punk band with more talent and heart than fallout boy, the new pornographers, or the hives (or any other punk in Rock band, in my opinion.) They have some harder, more emotional songs that aren't whiney, they do some metal (look up Pain for Pleasure) and their riffs aren't bad at all..admittedly not the hardest songs out there, but fun.

and of course Rush...nuff said. I actually didn't know Rush was that big outside of Canada till coming to this forum...being canadian, I don't see much of the outside world.

Here are a few modern bands I think have been missed:

Moneen, Silverstein, The Stills, Broken Social Scene (although I think their sister bands Stars and Metric were both mentioned before.) Pilot Speed (aka Pilate), Limblifter, some one already said Alexisonfire (but they needed to be re-mentioned), Evan's Blue, The Reason, Ten Second Epic, oh and Tokyo Police Club also need to be re-mentioned.

Each of those bands have great music that would be excellent in Rock Band.

I too want to hear some Matt Good Band, maybe some Hip (tho I am not a huge fan).

And I too will consider selling both of my Rock Bands (360 & PS3 baby!) if they have Nickelback DLC. Or as I like to call them "Jesus and His Crappy Band".

And as for female vocals... do NOT add Skye Sweetnam and Live on Release.. please... might as well have bands like The Moffats, or Serial Joe! heh. No I think Metric, Broken Social Scene, Feist, Stars, Holly McNarland (?), and maybe some earlier Chantel Kreviazuk would be plenty for female vocalists.

Three words:

Log. Driver's. Waltz.

Man, the National Film Board stuff gives me so much childhood nostalgia.

Glad to hear someone mentioned PRISM.
http://www.banophernalia.com/reviews/music/artists_prism.htm

Also glad to hear someone mentioned SAGA and LOVERBOY. There's some good classic tunes to be heard there. Canada has some good progressive rock besides of course RUSH.

(If anyone likes those old National Film Board shorts, then the Band "BOARDS OF CANADA" might be up your alley. I don't think they'd have anything suited to ROCKBAND, and truthfully, they're not even Canadian. They're Scottish I believe. Cool thing is, they use the old synthesizer sounds of the old Board of Canada NFB shorts. Pretty cool.)

BARENAKED LADIES!!!

You could definately choose one of the finger-picking songs for this game... full chords are very difficult to replicate in this game, especially when they go on for the full song, but throw in some BNL and i will definately download that

I would KILL for some April Wine.

Gypsy Queen, Roller, I Like to Rock, Could Have Been a Lady.

Hell, I'd even go for Rock 'n' Roll is a Vicious Game.

Lee Aaron! Harem Scarem! My god i feel old. Haven't heard their names in ages.

How about we throw in some Slik Toxic while we are at it? :)

And how Rockband can't have any Tragically hip I'll never know.

And a bit off topic, but why isn't AC/DC, GnR, Pearl Jam in the game? Come on people!

And we should have a salute to Jeff Healy for sure. Such a sudden and tragic death. We will miss him.

Our Lady Peace- Clumsy
Another Rush song, I don't really care which one
Celine Dion (I'm kidding lol)

The main canadian band I want in rock band is definitely Silverstein. Three hours back would probably be the best choice for the game because the guitar is good and basically is all singing! anyone with me?

Definitely loving some of those bands, especially The Guess Who, B.T.O., April Wine and TTH. But here's the most kick ass Canadian band I've ever heard.. 54-40! I'd love to hear some of their stuff on RB. Their lyrics are amazing, and they have great guitar riffs.

Take a listen to these:
"Ocean Pearl", "She-La", "Crossing A Canyon", and my favorite "She's A Jones"
They're a good solid rock group, and it would definitely be fun for anyone who likes to sing I think.

I'm surprised only one person mentioned B.T.O., and nobody's mentioned Kim Mitchell/Max Webster or The New Pornographers...

Also, whoever said that Sloan's Losing California should be in the game deserves a medal, and The Good In Everyone would be awesome too.

And please God NO TEA PARTY!

+1 for The New Pornographers - Bleeding Heart Show (or just about anything else of theirs. Twin Cinema might work.)
+1 for The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies) (or anything else)
+1 for Stars
+1 for Matthew Good
+1 for Tragically Hip (how about Bobcaygeon?)

(Turns out most of my favourites lack either a guitar or bass or both...)

yes to almost all of this, but i feel like the Hip is just... blah, i've heard much suggestions i would love and MASSIVE props to the poster who mentioned Project Wyze! i'll go a little further and throw in the name of Thornley who was the lead singer of Big Wreck.

Bryan Adams - Summer of 69 could be fun
The Trews
Trooper - The Boys In the Bright White Sports Car (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCVbyY2ZTjA&feature=related)
Chilliwack - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yahBtp_1jWE] My Girl
i'd even go for some Blue Rodeo

oh and to the one poster who said he would sell his RB if there was some Nickelback... pathetic, if you are that close minded you shouldn't be playing the game to begin with you sad sad little person

another thing... i never want to see or hear any Billy "no"Talent or Alexisonfire on this game, no, just no to both bands... and Rush, enough of them already!

I swear I'm one of the few Canadians out there who can't stand Tragically Hip for some reason. Really good calls on I Mother Earth and Our Lady Peace though, though not sure we'd ever get any Canadian bands as DLC.
