View Full Version : Can you believe the RB hate on the GH forums?

I'm a forum hopper. I jump around more on different forums then Mario on blocks. And I'm in the new Guitar Hero Community forums and there is just more and more hate for RB. Now there's some in there that like both and actually think that RB will be better (I'm one of 'em). But there's so many trolls on that community that bash it and think Guitar Hero will rule forever. If you want to waste a bit of time, reading these people babbling, be my guest!
Rock Band is a waste of Money! (http://www.guitarhero.com/forums/8/forum_topics/15148)

And for those that travel on those threads and tired of the RB hate. Vent here!!

It is only natural that this sort of thing crops up. RB is shaping up so well that it is viewed as a threat... threat means enemy means hate.

GH Fanpeoples. Honestly, I think thats who these people are. They think GH is the *Halo of music games, nothing else tops it. So they feel that RB is infringing on whatever awesomeness GH has over all music games. Dont get me wrong, GH is fun and addicting, but things have to come along to put it out of its place. (*Alluding to Halo being put in its place by Call of Duty 4)
Its kinda like me (a Saint's Row) fan vs. the GTA people. I think Saint's Row is paving path for other games to take GTA out of its place, because something has to eventually, and the GTA fans feel slightly threatened. Not knocking GTA, it obviously started the whole sandbox game thing, but new things will replace it eventually.
Thats all this whole thing is. Its fanboys feeling threatened because something else is going to put their game to shame.
Whatever though...who really cares. Dont like it, dont buy it. I personally dont understand why...RB=GH w/drums and a mic included w/4 player experience....that sounds pretty indescribably fun to me.

Thread Title: "My Rock Band High Scores!"
I would think. Hey, maybe I can get a higher score than this guy! Let's see what he's got.
I'll go into the thread and see:

Sad thing is, I'd probably be a Guitar Hero fanboy and I'd be bashing Rock Band as well. I was really upset when Rock Band wasn't announced for the Wii but for the PS2. But then I saw the GH3 soundtrack and saw the Muppet mouthed singer and I knew that Rock Band was the far superior game.

Are they not aware Harmonix created Guitar Hero?
They also can't add apprently. Not enough songs? 45 > 42 unless they're including bonus and if they are they should include DLC too wich ends up being about 120 > 75 (estimate)

The GH forum was bad before, since the (very good) redesign, it's got worse. Obviously kiddies posting. The best ones are always 'we need more xxxxxx. they are teh win. this gamez is easy'. Despite the fact their gamercard shows they haven't beaten medium!
This is a great forum. I hope it stays that way. I think it'd be worth HMX looking at more mods to cope with the influx of new posters as well. I'm just gutted there's still no UK release date *sigh*.

GHIII is good. I like it. Its not Great. GHII was great. Many fond memories. I can't count how many times I've played YYZ, Hangar 18 or Sweet Child of Mine. GHIII has a couple guilty pleasure songs like Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll, Endless Sporatic and My Name is Jonas. Its got its perks. Its just not great.
I'm sure when Rock Band hits shelves and its gets high praise. All those GHIII fanboys will get alt. user names and say that they've always liked Rock Band.

I think there is room for both games, they have different focuses. RB is about the social, songs that appeal to all instruments.... GH is about the guitar experience with songs that feature guitar.
I also think the GH forums suck. This is a better forum for GH than GH's is. :)
I also do think there is some GH hatred here too, it's not all one way. Not everyone can accpept that both games can coexist, they think it has to be one or the other (and being a RB forum, the one is RB).

Lol these threads are always fun. Well, i'm gonna give my two cents...
Lets look at the previous GH games (under harmonix).
GH1 = it was new for the american public, yeah, borrowed slightly from GF but new nonetheless. Pretty F-ing cool.
GH2 Ps2 = definite upgrade, good songs, newer style. Gameplay slightly changed.
GH2 360 = woot, HD. introduced lag, but fixed it :) great new added songs plus DLC.
Now lets look at the neversoft brand.
GH3 = moderate songlist, new interface, DLC asap.. Online play.
and now the future.
GH4 (neversoft) = just like 3, no new ideas, basically the same thing as before.
GH: Underground = hey look, now you dont just play the songs, you get to walk around too!
GH: Underground 2 = oh geez, something new please!
GH: American Wasteland = Not even worth purchasing
GH: Project 11 (you cant just put it at 8, its not rock enough) = Now, you're walking around trying to join an elite rock group... wow... and now, you can do a cool matrix move with your frets and add your own notes.
GH: Oh come on, you get what im saying.
Neversoft will never make anything new, it will be the same old crap but will rely on DLC to make money off the games.
Rock Band at least will be original through 1 and 2, and hopefully we'll have a franchise to follow for a long time.
BTW, im not a harmonix fanboy, but anyone who puts freezepop in almost every game they make, can't be half bad :)

Considering both games were (originally, at least) developed by Harmonix, I think it's silly to like one and not the other. In my experience, it's generally the younger crowd who take sides in these matters, since they're on a limited budget and so they're essentially forced to "side" with whichever game they can afford or somehow have access to. I've enjoyed the Guitar Hero series since its inception, and Rock Band is the next step in progressing the game's model. However, while Guitar Hero may be seen as the more "simple" of the two, it still retains some exclusivity, because there are certain things Rock Band will most likely not do because of its wide scope, mostly pertaining to vocals:
1) Instrumentals, or songs with very few vocals. Since totally cutting out vocals on some tracks probably wouldn't be received very well, don't expect songs like YYZ or Through the Fire and the Flames any time soon.
2) "Heavier" music, especially songs involving growling or screaming. Not only does this seem harder to register on the microphone, but it would prevent many singers from completing the songs due to the nonstandard vocal techniques. Something tells me Lamb of God will not soon be on Rock Band.
3) Basically anything else that alienates one section of the band. I can't think of any examples of drumless/bassless music but they may exist (although most of them probably wouldn't qualify as "rock" anyway, so that's somewhat moot.)
Of course, there's a litany of things Rock Band can do that Guitar Hero can't, and we all know about those. To me, two new instruments and four-player coop outweigh the factors I mentioned above, but that doesn't mean that I won't be playing Guitar Hero after I get Rock Band, either. Both games can coexist peacefully, even if they're occupying a similar design space. If Activision continues through with other Guitar Hero peripherals though...
Well, things could get ugly.
Addendum: I didn't see it in time for a quote, but innocuoussoul, Neversoft's repetition of the Tony Hawk series isn't their fault, it's the fault of their parent company, Activision. They created a successful franchise, and it's no wonder their publisher wants to run with it. They're a capable, flexible developing team and with their successful properties it's no wonder that Activision is trying to milk them for all they're worth. So while I do agree that we may see Guitar Hero fall into a sort of lull where sequels are just pushed out, you can't blame Neversoft. They just want to keep their jobs.

Alright, thats a fair statement. But thats the sole problem, they are under activision. Activision pumps every franchise they have until no one likes it or its been so over done no one cares about new releases. The only game so far that has had a decent release after 3 generations is COD 4. if they would've spent another month on it, it wouldve been easily a halo killer, and still is anyway. What is going to happen is the series will be milked dry, and we'll see releases that just arent up to snuff (hate to say it, but GH: 80's). But in all fairness, you're right, its not really neversoft's fault, although you see their name more in games then you do activision. I think harmonix did a good thing by moving to a new, but familiar franchise like rockband. And having them listen to the community instead of being shunned, (stupid activision) was amazing. The DLC for example is still a tad expensive, but at least i don't feel too much like a stupid consumer, there to make them money.
Overall, Ishanji, i give you a *high five* for effort, instead of flaming, you portrayed your response well. *applauds*
But one last thing....
You made a statement saying you'll still play guitar hero. I agree with you... guitar hero 2 that is... 3's songlist is terrible. im not saying every song has to be perfect, but geez. Neversoft should've gotten the license to reuse Goldfinger's Superman *hint hint, harmonix, hint hint*

11-20-2007, 09:49 AM
People like to take sides over things that are essentially matters of consumer preference, because it gives them a sense of identity.
The more frivolous the item or issue, it seems, the more violent the factions. You see this in the absurd Ford/Chevy partisan window stickers, Nascar driver fans, the PS3/Wii/Xbox 360 flame wars, PC versus Apple; the list goes on, and has gone on, for as long as brand consciousness has existed. It's amusing how products that are basically similar provoke such a need in folks to play up their differences and consequent superiority or inferiority.
So, whatever you have, Calvin is peeing on it, okay? Mine's better.
The fact is that I've bought both games, but neither will define me as a person. Nor do I need to defend either game. You know, they pay advertisers and PR people to do that for a living.

I for one love GH, and GH2 but I did not buy GH3 because..I just didn't see any incentive for me to buy it. Yeah good songs, and some pretty nifty game play battle type things. But overall it just didn't appeal to me like the others. Now RB it is an AMAZING game. I LOVE IT,and so does my family. It's addictive, and it doesn't get boring. Played it the past 2 days for at least 10 hours(finally we are like the #258 band). But overall you did an AMAZING job with this game Harmonix! Keep up the good work! I agree with innocuoussoul that there should be some Goldfinger... I just think it would be better in RB :)
GH3 does have some great tracks in there that I really like but the things I didn't like about the game drag it down in the end.
I felt the sloppy window on hitting HOPOs was a bad move. I understand why they did it but to change something like that to make one or two songs playable seems a little strange. In GH2 I had trouble doing them at first but when I nailed an extended sequence of them that first time I felt like a guitar god! :) I don't get that in GH3 since I can sloppily spam the keys and I'll hit the notes 99% of the time.
I didn't like the boss battles. I do not believe they added anything to the experience and if anything detracted from it.
The note charts on a few of the songs had me scratching my head as to the way they did it but I can forgive this somewhat since this is a rookie effort.Overall I think Neversoft did a decent job on their first crack at it but it does not live up to GH2 to me.

Most of the posters on there haven't even played the game, or played it for a minute in the store. How do you post judgement on something you haven't even seen?? GH is a quaterback, RB is the whole football game.
As far as the guitar being heavy, play a real guitar, like a les paul standard and tell me how heavy you still think it is!!

GH3 = moderate songlist, new interface, DLC asap.. Online play.
To be fair, that's not an absolute. I think GH3 has the best song list yet, easily better than GH2's metal-laden song list. Not that GH3 doesn't have its share of metal (which I'd love to see GONE), but it has more quality:crap ratio than GH2 did. Master tracks help a lot too.
BTW, im not a harmonix fanboy, but anyone who puts freezepop in almost every game they make, can't be half bad :)
I agree, developers who put non-rock bands in rock games rule (sorry Freezepop fans, but it's my never-ending pet peeve... putting music which is in a different genre than the rest of the game is not cool, no matter how much you like it, or how many developers are in the band). :P
Harmonix has made some great games, but they aren't perfect either. Some of the decisions they've made have been... odd at times (the various blemishes in the usability of BWT that are getting discussed to death in the forums here, for example). They've also had bad playability too (hammer-ons in GH1 were bloody awful, thank God they fixed it). With any luck, Neversoft will work out the kinks in GH3, and GH4 will continue the series' tradition of each installment being better than the last!

we have a tour group over at that site, The Old Dudes, and you have to be 30+ years old to get in, or at least be mature.
We've got something 180+ members, and we are #10 on the entire Tour Group list.
Not a SINGLE one of our group has posted any such nonsense like that. As far as I can tell, everyone that actively posts in our group forum there is buying RB, or has already bought it, and they all love it. There's no immature hate. We discuss it like adults. Both games have negatives and positives.
I can't say that all the flamers are little kiddies either. Looks to be lot of older jackasses doing the same thing. That's the internet though. Everyone is faceless and anonymous and can say what they please without fear of getting punched in the face.
Not ALL people at that forum are immature jerks. I know of at least 180 people in our tour group that would make everyone that is a good member of this forum proud.

Are you kidding me? I'm a gamer - AND a musician. How cool is it that there are MORE music talent games coming out! The more the merrier. And what better for Rock Band to come out being DIFFERENT than Guitar Hero. Why should it have the same song selection? Or the same type of game play? I LIKE the fact that the songs are different, I get a fuller experience playing both games. I'm a singer more than a guitarist (though I do both, but I prefer to sing), so I love singing with friends on Rock Band.
Guitar has some AWESOME music selections when it comes to legend guitar songs, but for those musicians who are not guitarists, can we ALL appreciate the great songs in Rock Band that come from some great bands with awesome drum beats and vocal licks to play? How ******ed would it be if Rock Band had the same songs as Guitar Hero?
So, I have BOTH! To be honest, I was much more waiting in anticipation for Rock Band because I play all the instruments and it's a 4 player game. For you guitarists out there, I can see why you'd lean more towards Guitar Hero. That's cool.
I just can't wait for the guitar to be released soon so I could REALLY have a 4 person band.

ok... the first one was just some idiot who wanted a little attention...
the second was not really all that bad...
The third was something very stupid and ignorant to say... about 10 of the songs in RB are the same as those in GH3... When We Were Young, Reptilia, and others... I actually find some of GH3's songs unreasonable... One! The triplet phrases are faster than I can drum... And they HO/PO in GH3 are way off and it makes me miss notes:( Also the notes are wrong... Rock Band IS a lot better than Guitar Hero 3

we have a tour group over at that site, The Old Dudes, and you have to be 30+ years old to get in, or at least be mature.
Great post. I am Ovationgirl on the GH board and here I go by my xbox gamer tag. Was even tempted to join your group(I have 4500+ fans and am not in a tour group), but two of us who play on our tag are under 30... :p
I agree with the plusses and minuses of both games. We love our GH3 and our RB! I am hoping that RB will get the bugs out faster than GH did.
I do miss the scoring interface on the new GH site. Question for mods, will we have that here?
Thanks! :D
