View Full Version : Will Rock Band "ruin" music?

I don't mean for this to sound negative, but this is something I was thinking about recently, when going through my iPod to listen to songs that I knew were going to be in Rock Band.
After having Guitar Hero for a few days/weeks, I realized that whenever I heard a song on the radio, or on an iPod, or at a party, or wherever, that I could not prevent myself from thinking about how it was played in the game (note-chart wise).
It's not that bad, though it can be a little irksome at times. So my question is, does anyone else experience this same thing, and will some of these classic songs added into the game ever be the same again?

The answer to your question is No. It makes you think about music more, and you might just learn the lyrics to songs you heard 233454 times before but dont know wth its saying.

I actually notice a lot of small touches to the music that I never noticed before. Quiet guitar licks that add a "cool" factor to the music. A lot of the stuff I didn't realize was in songs until I played them in GH. That's awesome, to me.

I agree. The minutiae of the guitar parts are always fun, because I'd never heard them before GH, and now I kind of listen for them in the real recordings.

I do the same thing when I hear a song I see the notechart in my mind, but it definitely doesn't ruin it for me, I just hope DLC in rockband will release more challenging songs with higher difficulty cause i love a challenge.

On the contrary, Rock Band and GH are breathing life into bands that might otherwise fade into obscurity.
Five years ago, I would have never heard of Kansas, the Allman Brothers, etc.
Half the bands in these games recorded their hits before the major demographic of gamers were ever born.

yup it sure it will. killed free bird for me.. actually not really.. but every time i hear it i need to rush home and play it.
my local radio has done a few "guitar hero lunch" days.. as if i haven't already heard the songs in game enough i now have to hear them on teh radio.. uggg
and yes note charts every time.. but i do that with EVERY SONG now.
it's really not bad. the over playing of songs gets old fast. but with RB there will be so many choices eventually you may not be able to play all the songs in a week!
so that should get rid of that.. i swear if i heard the riff from cowboys from hell one more time (and i love pantera) i would murder some one.. then gh2 came out and it became if i hear freebird one more friggan time.. ;)

::siiiigh:: it's sad cause it's true.
i honestly think its great these bands get some exposure. but for my own personal selfishness as a music freak. i hate it. suddenly every one and their sister thinks they know music. and suddenly know things it took me years and years of attending shows and listening to stuck up music snobs preach, and thousands of hours watching vh1 etc etc.
but now evvvvveryone is an expert.
i dunno which is worse.. people with no taste in music before guitar hero suddenly having some taste (cause its trendy music again).. or if guitar hero never caught on and every one still loved awful music.
you know how hard it is to get laid these days? my musical taste impresses no one now.. DAMN YOU GUITAR HERO!!!!:p

Unfortunately, Freebird was killed the moment it became a rock n' roll punchline. I'm not knocking Skynyrd because I'd love to get "That Smell" on a game, but when Freebird was put on GH2 it was just playing to that ongoing joke.
And yes, I'd say the GH series and Rock Band have actually had an enriching effect on many people. I'm a big classic rock fan so I don't have the same problem as people who don't know the Allman Bros. Band (come on!) but it has introduced me to some songs and groups who I had earlier dismissed.

I was doing a note chart in my head to the organ music in church last Sunday.
Slightly annoying, but it did make me pay more attention to the music.

I would love if people got a good taste in music again.
That won't happen though. One video game alone can't change that.
We need another Beatles in quality and popularity to revive music.

it is.. but he got the punchline wrong..
the joke is.. if you ever go to a local show.. and feel like mocking the band. people start calling for freebird thus the loading screen stating "they dont really want you to play freebird" (or something like that)
the joke is.. the band sucks. and cant play freebird. and then every one laughs. the screams of "SLAYER!!!" are the same thing and just as common at punk shows. then the guitarist usually plays the opening riff to reign in blood and every one jokingly cheers then he cant play the rest of the song and every one boos and a good time is had by all.
to say it was a joke of song is incorrect. but it is the punch line of touring live when you are small.
trust me NO ONE wants to hear your band hack apart freebird. and in all the shows i have been to.. no one has ever pulled it off.. only about 1% actually give it a try and its always hilarious.
