Who is everybody's favorite vocalist, and why?
My favorite vocalists are Freddy Mercury and Robert Plant, both due to their unique voices and high vocal range (which I prefer).
In third for me is David Gilmour, he has a great emotional voice that fits the mood of Floyd's songs.

Issac Brock of Modest Mouse. His lyrics are quirky and witty. His voice is filled with love and hate, peace and war, violence and compasion all at the same time. For those of you who only know thier newer stuff ie Float On and Dashboard, check out thier older stuff.

Freddie Mercury, without a doubt.
IMO the best frontman in all of rock history.
Only Jimmy Gnecco has a voice I like more and would consider better, but Freddie brings everything when it comes to what a vocalist should be. Between his voice, his stage presence, his charisma, it all combines to make him the best.

Annie Lennox - powerful, haunting... her range is amazing
Stokley of Mint Condition (genre: Minneapolis funk, R&B) - when he sings, you feel it, especially live, on stage.
(I know most folks here won't know who he is, but oh well :))

a little cliche for metal, but Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. Makes me wanna sing and soar like he does whenever i hear him.
others:
Allison Goldfrapp of Goldfrapp. Sexy and subdued. LOVE her.
Martin Walkyier of Sabbat. His vocal delivery is so venomous.

Favorite singers eh?
I'd have to ssay David Coverdale is probably my favorite singer. He's got a very nice warm timbre to his voice and is more than capable of hitting four ocatves when he wants to. Good bluesy quality to him yet still very rock. Covey is all about his delivery and tone which is usually excellent. He expresses himself very well vocally emotion wise. The consumate rock singer IMO.

Eddie Vedder. In my opinion, he's one of the greatest singers ever. Pretty nice vocal range (though not always showed), great lyrics,...I just can't think of the right way to put it. :)

Chris Cornell or Ian Gillan. Child in Time is amazing for Gillan and I like his falsetto type voice. Cornell is one of a couple singers who can actually scream well, and he's really emotional.

I've been trying to think of the best way to express what kind of singer I want to find once I work on getting a band back together. (In Boston, next year)
I've realized that I really dislike most of the fancy styles of singing.
The examples I've come up with-
Both of the singers in Guster work well together, and aren't overly fancy.
Stephen Page of Barenaked Ladies has a wonderfully strong voice, and good harmonic taste.
and Trey Anastasio has a voice that is simple, and does exactly what it needs to do for a song.

3. Dave Draiman of Disturbed
4. The Killers' singer (don't know his name)
5. Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden (Was number 3 but I was kinda annoyed when I found out why there isn't more Maiden in RB)

I think Matt Sander's from Avenged Sevenfold has a really good voice considering he busted blood vessels from screaming and had to change his whole singing style...
