PS2 Online?

Does anyone know if the PS2 can play online?

Nope. Even though the PS2 does have an ethernet port, there is no online infrastructure for PS2s.

And there won't be DLC either, for that reason (and no storage).

I for one have yet to find an official statement on this beyond fan speculation. If someone knows of one please point me in the right direction as it would influence my purchase decision greatly.

Harmonix made Amplitude, and Amplitude had a wealth of online gameplay, you could even upload your own songs and stuff. Same developer, same platform, hello? I can understand downloadable content not working out due to lack of storage - but PS2 has handled online gameplay before. Harmonix has done it on the PS2 before. Simply because it doesn't have a unified network architecture does not mean that the game can't use it's own servers. Many have done so in the past, and it's certainly possible, even plausible that Harmonix will do it with Rock Band especially. So without an official statement regarding this, I can't discount the possibility of online play simply because the PS2 doesn't support DLC - which is only basically because it doesn't have proper storage...which can also be dealt with using extra peripherals anyway. Heck Rock Band already added a set of drums, who's to say they didn't throw in a small flash drive for the PS2 people? Is that completely implausible, those things are cheap nowadays. While that may be a stretch, I'd like people to think about the fact that this game already pushes the boundaries of existing games, and existing games have certainly done online play using the PS2 - including one Harmonix made themselves.

EDIT: Oh hey I found the official word that it's not included buried in the internet. I guess I'll have to pass on Rock Band for now. I honestly can't afford another console and the game, and I'm not going to buy a crippled version of it. Leaving my original post for posterity.

Do people here still play online games with their PS2? I did when the network adapter came out, but thats about it...

I think the genius of RB is with the local mulitplayer game anyway...I doubt you would miss online it if it's really gone....?
