I picked the Angels to win the World Series. I would have loved to pick the White Sox, but if they do make the playoffs, I can hardly see them making it to the ALCS, let alone the World Series.
I say it'll be the Angels and the Cubs in the World Series, with the Angels winning it. As long as the White Sox aren't in it,(How awesome would a Cubs-White Sox world series be?) then I'll be rooting for the Cubbies.

C'mon, just because they're mathematically eliminated from the playoffs doesn't mean they don't stand a chance! I fully expect Bud Selig to go back and reverse a number of their losses and put them right on top of the AL East. :D

Cubs-Sox? Fox would hate it... the marketability of the series would be awful outside of a rather narrow geographic region.
I want to see the Cubs win it all, although I'm not sure if they will.
All I know is the Tigers should be firing Jim Leyland for being suicidally loyal to players that can't play worth crap. Gary Sheffield and Brandon Inge struggle to hit at the Mendoza Line, and Nate Robertson and Kenny Rogers can't go four innings without being shelled...

being that im from chicago i would have to disagree with you. the cubs have the 3rd highest fanbase behind the yanks and bosox so i think the series would rate very well. everywhere the cubs travel you see their jerseys being worn, they have a boatload of fans. it would be comparable to the yanks-mets series.
if you really wanna see a marketing disaster try the phillies vs the rays....

hey im a sox fan :( LOL
they had a very low rating but they also were facing the astros, who even though they come from one of the top 5 populated cities in the US, dont really have a wide appeal. had the sox faced a team like the dodgers or mets, the ratings would've been better.
all you really need in the series is one highly popular team. personally i think fox and mlb would be very excited for an all chicago series. they would play that up to no end.....'will the cubs, losers for 100 years finally break through against their cross town rivals? or will they forever remain losers as the southsiders win their 2nd title in 4 years?' :D
cub fans would puke in their beer if they lost a world series to the sox lol

Well, the White Sox would be a decent ratings draw if they were playing anybody other than the Cubs... if so, it doesn't really add anything to the table. All of Chicago would be watching anyway. :)
As out there as it sounds, I think I'm going to predict a Cubs-Rays Series... Tampa has been backsliding a bit recently, but youth has a tendency to shake things up come playoff time.

I agree the Cubs will kick sand in the face of every other NL team, but the Rays have a 50/50 chance of coming up on top. Either they go to hell and back in the AL race, or fail at the ALCS.

well every expert on ESPN & other major networks were quick to declare the cubs the team to beat in the NL playoffs last yr only to get their asses swept. i wont belive it till i see it from the cubs so i will go with the phillies (who have their offensive mojo back). they have a good ace in hamels. a good number 2 in myers, who has been filthy since coming back from AAA. plus moyer who has won 15 games. plus brad lidge is the best closer in the NL.
in the AL i would love to see the white sox make a big splash in the playoffs but i believe the angels will make it to the series. their starters are good, bullpen is solid and k rod is....well k rod lol. their offense is improved with teixeira, vlad & hunter in the middle of the lineup.
angels 4-3 phillies.

During the ALDS, they tend to start some west coast games at 10:05 PM, even when playing against east coast teams. Pretty annoying.
Even the 8:00 games can be a ***** for east coasters as they really don't start until closer to 8:30 and many times end up going past midnight.

I'm not a Soxcist either. I don't really worry about a team that the cubs only play 6 games (maybe 7 more???) of the season against. I'll worry more about a team that the Cubs play 15 or so games against in their division.
I want for the Sox to win against the Twins. Make the post season a little more intersting. I don't really have to worry about the Cubs, for the next coupe of games.
Edit: ^No Biggy, I don't really care. I made it a couple of weeks ago when there wasn't really a playoff buzz. It was barried deep down in the general forum probably like page 4 or 5. I didn't keep up with it .

Sorry, but damn. Other than Zambrano not being able to get his head out of his arse right now, I don't see anyone doing major damage to the Cubs starting rotation, and if they do, their offense (assume Fukedome is sitting on the bench where he belongs) can do some damage of their own! Cubs World Series, but in seven games in true Cubbie fashion.

The Dodgers? Really?? I'm from LA so I half-a$$ed like the Dodgers, but wow! Is or is not the NL West the worst division in baseball (OK the AL West is, but still)? I am not sure Manny Ramirez has ever seen Cubs pitching before, but either way, he is not going to have a good series, especially if he hasn't.
Twins, Rays, Angels, Red Sox.... Maybe. They would be good games though if any of those teams gets to the World Series without absolutely destroying each other first. None of them are doing well right now. Only the Angels and the Rays have a winning record in their last ten games.
The Phillies and the Cubs will be a great NLCS. The Mets have proven they cannot beat the Cubs. Their series was disgusting to watch this past week. They gave the damn games away. Unless Santana pitches complete games every day, they'll give it up eventually, if they even make the playoffs, which they might as the Cubs play the Brewers the rest of the year and NY plays the Marlins (who actually stand a chance -as anyone does- against NY's bullpin).
Anyway, Cubs win.

He is the "Players' Coach." People want to win for him. I don't like how they started to play "home run or die" though. I liked it better when they nickel and dimed it to win games. It's exciting to watch. Not that homeruns aren't I just think small ball is the way the game should be played.

"Ozzie ball" small ball idea with HRs to boost it, plus he is in a players mindset, he goes into EVERY game and thinks "we are going to win" he fully expects to go 162-0 at the start of every season

i wouldn't count out manny & the dodgers in a playoff matchup against the cubs. manny is the best right handed hitter of his generation and is a clutch playoff performer & the dodgers have been much improved since he arrived. im not a believer in the mets, but the philles are the team that i think would give the cubs some problems.
im in a 'wont believe it till i see it' stance with the cubs cuz whether its 2003 when they choked a 3-1 lead to the marlins or last yr when their offense pulled a houdini vs the dbacks, something always happens. and i believe it will happen again. sorry cub fans.

I respect your opinion, but one of the things that stands out to me when I look at the Cubs are the one-two-punch combination of Zambrano and Lilly (assuming Zambrano returns to the form he's been in most of the season). This will give the Cubs a huge advantage, as they will most likely have back-to-back wins when these two pitchers pitch consecutively, as they most likely will. Add Dempster, hello world championship! :)

actually zambrano has been bad since around the beginning of august except for the no hitter. i think you're overlooking the dodgers and what an improved team they are. we'll find out soon enough tho and lilly wont pitch till game 4. playoff rotation looks like this: dempster, zambrano, harden, lilly.

i think this comment is a bit off. sure he came back from injury and got lit like a firecracker on the 4th of july but when he came back he was great. in august he went 4-0 w/ a 1.43 ERA, 1.01 WHIP & .191 BAA. finished the 2nd half at 11-6 w/ 2.74 ERA, 1.19 WHIP & .236 BAA. will he be as dominant as that rookie year, probably not but he will be a 1 or 2 type pitcher on almost any baseball team.

NO!!!! well mabey a little
The twins are 2-7 at Chicago so i think the odds are in your favor, and we had plenty of good oppertunitys to get the title but the twins choked.
I still have hope tho.
Yeah, I'm so psyched for tomorrow. I won't be able to watch the game, but I can't wait to see this whole AL central race all sorted out.
Although I hate not being the underdog. I don't know why, but I feel a lot more comfortable being the underdog in these situations.

I bleed Cubbie blue. I think we have a real good shot at going all the way this year. I'd like to see Fukudome and D. Lee heat up a little more, and Big Z pull his head out...but everything else is clicking really well. Giving Dempster the ball for game one was the best call. He's been the most consistent winner all year. Hopefully we'll do better than 3 and out like last year.

Wow that was a pretty hard game to watch (Cubs-Dodgers). It just goes to show if your pitcher walks 6 guys in 5 innings, you are not going to hold on to a two run lead.
Dempster was still the best pick for ame 1 though. He has been the most consistant starter for the cubs, and he was 10-3 at Wrigley this season. The Dodgers played a hellof a great game one. I thought we had them once dempster got out of that first bases loaded jam. But that is why Baseball/Sports in general are fun to watch. I belive that the cubs will right the ship tomorrow with big Z.

i wouldn't count on zambrano. take away the fluke no hitter and he has been atrocious since around august. billingsley is an outstanding pitcher who can strike out 10 every time he takes the bump. he went 16-10 with an ERA of 3.14, which is pretty damm good. i predict the cubs will lose again tonight. and just to show that im not biased, im a chisox fan but not rooting against the cubs , i predict that the sox will lose as well cuz james shields is a beast and javi vazquez is NOT a big game pitcher as he has proved time and time again
if its so hard, just change over to a team that doesn't seem to disappoint every single time they reach the postseason, which isn't that often to begin with :p

I noticed something last night I was wondering about, does Lester always wear that necklace/ropechain thing/whatever it was or was that the same on Beckett was wearing in the playoffs last year? It kinda looked the same, does Beckett always wear it? Our Fox affilate here is in NY so don't see much Red Sox. Pretty much Blue Jays,Yankees,Braves and Mets. i wouldn't count on zambrano. take away the fluke no hitter and he has been atrocious since around august.
There is no doubt that Zambrano has looked down right horrible since the no-no. Which wasn't a fluke, he had great control of his pitches and his velocity stayed up throughout the game. I know about the whole hurricane argument , but that was another thread.
Zambrano is a good postseason pitcher. Last year he only gave up one run against ARI, the cubs just had some crappy hitting, ARI ended up winning 3-1, eventually sweeping the series. And in 2003 he wasn't good as he is today. Also those last couple of games the cubs had already clinched so he didn't really have the emotion that he usually pitches with.
Even though Billingsley is capable of being a lights out kind of pitcher the cubs ar 1-0 with a no-decision against him this year. So the Cubs can win against him.
Also if the Cubs go down 2-0 it will be really hard to win the series, really, really hard. Especially going to LA. It is pretty much a must win so you can see why I would want Z to win it.
And I am not switching teams even if the Cubs lose. I will bleed Cub blue until I die of a Heart attack when Carlos Zambrano II walks in the winning run of game seven of the WS in 2040

just going to respond to the lines that really caught my eye lol zambrano was looking bad even before the no-hitter. taking away the fluke no-hitter, which i stand behind by the way lol, he has given up 37 runs in the last 33 IP or so. including 6 runs on aug. 26th, 5 runs on aug. 15th, 9 runs on aug. 9th. that is a horrible trend leading up to a must win situation.
now on to the 'emotion' factor. he didn't have the 'emotion'?!?! lol so you're saying because the cubs had nothing to play for, he mailed it in?? i would like to think that a pitcher goes out to win each time he takes the hill, no matter what the situation. zambrano is a headcase just like javi vazquez. if zambrano needs to pump himself up in order to be any good, he should take some pointers from pitchers like greg maddux, brandon webb, mike mussina and countless others who beat your ass with their stuff as much as they do with their smarts and rarely show any emotion while doing so.
true about billingsley. but i would point out that he only has 15 IP in his career against the cubs. the less a team has seen of a pitcher the bigger the advantage for said pitcher.
suit yourself lol stay w/ the cubs. grin & bear it should they lose again:p

Yeah what I said in my last post was kinda a cubs fan post and not a baseball fan post. But probably what I should have said was that Zambrano did have some arm troubles(Dead arm period and such) late in the season. Though You can't deny that Zambrano is a better pitcher when he pumps himself up, and he is a very emotionaly pitcher.
I kinda got ahead of myself impling that he is only good when he pitches with emotion. Again that was cub fan post, not baseball fan.
You would think that emotions shouldn't play a role but they do. That doesn't mean a player need that a player needs emotion to be good or bad.

CUBS=Completely Useless By September.
WTF the cubs are truley beating themselves in game 2. So far the story for the Cubs has been errors, impatience and just plain sloppy baseball. Zambrano had the best at-bat of the game so far(for the cubs). After those two semi-well hit balls that were booted I truely believe forces outside of the cubs will never let the cubs win another WS
And I haven't declared my dislike of Alfonso Soriano yet so I'll do it now. I have never liked Soriano. They paid to much for him, he in no possible way is a lead off hitter, and I cringe every time he does his little hop in the outfield. Now I have another thing to add on to my list of soriano dislikes. The count is 2-0 and you chase a high inside pitch? WTF your the leadoff hitter take a pitch the worst thing that can happen is you go 2-1, still a hitter's count. If your the leadoff hitter you don't use a freakin 36 ounch bat either. And every, EVERY! coach I have had in my 13 years of playing baseball never told me to hop before I catch a ball. I know it was his way to get used to the outfield but Tons of players have gone from IF to OF without having to hop.
If you want to know more about my dislike of soriano and my reasons feel free to PM me. I got a lot of it.
I know it is easy to dish out criticism, but I really need to vent ,and I have said this since we got soriano.

i gotta say i dont believe in curses. its a crutch that people lean on to explain why their teams cant succeed. there is no baseball god out there just wanting to tease cub fans into thinking that this is their year. IMO the cubs this year while they won a lot of games just had a terrible matchup going against LA. and they tend to, pardon me for saying so, choke.
as i have said im a chisox fan and dont root against the cubs, but i wont ever cheer for them, you have soriano but for me my least favorite player and i hate watching him play as well is zambrano. i find him to be a pain in the ass and seeing him unable to harness his 'emotion' is fun to watch. :D

I don't believe in curses either, but this is freakin just a pain to watch (they did get a run though:)). But I am now beyond reasonable explainations for what the cubs look like tonight other than what comes out of most animals' hind quarters(I know what your thinking but I don't think Jellyfish go #2, thereby "most animals")
It doesn't really matter what the match up was you play like they have played you won't beat anybody (dodgers scored 8-1).
I also don't belive that a team can indefinately "choke". But I have eaten my words once again. I have no explinations for why they look so different from the post Season (well i do but probably none are right, or all of them are right). I can't even stand to watch Baseball Tonight or Sportscenter after tonights game for a breakdown of why my team blows.(9-1)
BTW I am a cubs fan who doesn't root against the Sox. Like you I just don't root in favor of them.
EDIT: This will probably be my last post on the subject of the Cubs losing. I don't want to sound like a broken recond, that has been broken since 1909. Also note: I have not given up on the Cubs yet this year. They are not out of it till they are mathmatically eliminated. It just looks very, very bad

dunno it looks like the rays are on fire. they're like the rockies last year. meaning they'll prolly lose to the Dodgers or Phillies in the world series or even the tigers 2 years back, nobody gave the cards a chance, most of all me, cuz the tigers are my favorite team.

I also don't belive that a team can indefinately "choke". But I have eaten my word once again. I have no explinations for why they look so different from the post Season (well i do but probably none are right, or all of them are right). I can't even stand to watch baseball tonight after tonights game for a breakdown of why my team blows.(9-1)
BTW I am a cubs fan who doesn't root against the Sox. Like you I just don't root in favor of them.
i think that the cub players while wont openly say that the team is cursed, they buy into all that nonsense and put even more pressure on themselves and will choke. especially if they are favored which the cubs have been the last 2 yrs. they see that the sox & sawks have finally broken through and won titles and put even more pressure on themselves.
on another note, i picture cub fans as battered wives who keep getting abused by their husbands (the cubs) and keep saying to themselves that their husbands will change lol just makes me wonder why they keep taking the abuse:confused:

and i see the rays as the best team. i mean they beat both sox in the season series, so i see no reason they cant win the AL.

im not ready to declare the rays will even make it. they faced the sox 4th best pitcher right now due to the top 3 guys just having pitched themselves and having little rest. javi vazquez is a headcase who cant pitch in big game situations. tomorrow should be a better test for where the series will go.

Because when they finally do win (eventually it will happen) the feeling will be so great. Might even be better than sex. I will break down and cry when they win it, no I don't crymax either.

im very aware of that as i imagine the rest of the baseball world is but you're basing the outcome of a series on one game & i think its a bit premature

this is the time when the detective says 'you know he's gonna keep beating you until we find you in a ditch somewhere dead right?' then the abused says 'no he loves me i know that he can change.' LOL:D

EDIT: This will probably be my last post on the subject of the Cubs losing. I don't want to sound like a broken recond, that has been broken since 1909. Also note: I have not given up on the Cubs yet this year. They are not out of it till they are mathmatically eliminated. It just looks very, very bad
I completely agree with ya 100% This is NOT the team that we've seen this year. First Dempster takes a nose dive and walks 7 in game one,(when he walked 7 in the whole month of Sept!)...then game two comes and the defense blows it in the 2nd. FOUR ERRORS AT 1ST, 2ND, 3RD AND SHORT, even though Zambrano pitched a good game. There's no excuse. My stomach is churning as I type. Hopefully..*crosses fingers*..we can get back on track and get things going in the third game. Just one question...Why the HELL would you let Fukudome bat in the 9th?...I was at my fathers house watching the game and we're both screaming, "Where's Reed Johnson?!?...Where's Fontenot?!?..." and other added expletives....use your imagination. Point is...if we're playing THIS bad..we deserve to lose.

hate to say i told you so to all the cub fans in these forums but i was telling to all that the dodgers would not be a pushover. now if only the angels could get it in gear all my picks will look solid ;)
