View Full Version : How About Some Indie Rock?

There's a few indie bands I'd like to see, though not all of them are plausible. Here's a few of my favorite choices:

Animal Collective- Anything by them that would be plausible.
Arcade Fire- Anything from Funeral.
Arctic Monkeys- probably something like I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor.
Beulah- shout out if you've heard of Beulah, it's so hard to find fans these days.
Of Montreal- would be wonderful to sing, to say the least.
We Are Scientists- Lousy Reputation is one of my all-time favorite bass lines.
The Decemberists- The Island (If you thought Free Bird was long...)
Belle and Sebastian- I'm partial to their Books EP, personally.
The White Stripes- Though I can't think of a song that isn't guitar/drums/vocals.
Kaiser Chiefs- Naturally Ruby and I Predict A Riot stand out.
The Long Winters- Personally my favorite would have to be Fire Island, AK.
Locksley- For The Summer (once again, shout out if you know Locksley).

Any other suggestions? Or, if you just wanna talk indie music, go ahead and add me.

If they took the organ part from The Landlord's Daughter and stuck that on guitar (or even better, if there was a keyboard controller....) that would be awesome! That entire song rocks in as much sense of the word that the Decemberists can, and Meloy's lyrics are really great to boot.

I dismissed Arcade Fire at first, since I'm not sure how well they would work with all their instruments. If I had to choose a song from Funeral, perhaps Neighborhood #3?

As for Arctic Monkeys, they have a ton that would work well. Brianstorm would probably be a blast to play.

Yea, I agree they should include indie rock in the downloadable content. I'm kind of a blochead so I'd want to see some Bloc party songs on the list.

Bloc party - Two more years, The Prayer, Pioneers, Little Thoughts, Like Eating Glass, I Still Remember, Helicopter and Banquet.

All these songs, to me have good drum, guitar and bass parts. I also think they should include:

Arctic Monkeys - Brainstorm
We Are Scientists - Lousy Reputation

If I had to take anything from Arctic Monkeys, I'd like "Fluroescent Adolescent", but the end has the chorus and verse being sung in rounds, so it'd be hard to put in the game, as such.

Off of the top of my head, my list of indie rock songs that would work well in the game:

Pigeon Detectives - "I'm Not Sorry"
British Sea Power - "Please Stand Up"
Milburn - "Cheshire Cat Smile"
Art Brut - "Direct Hit"
Editors - "Munich"
Maximo Park - "Apply Some Pressure"
Silversun Pickups - "Well Thought Out Twinkles"
Babyshambles - "The Blinding" or Dirty Pretty Things - "Deadwood"
Idlewild - "No Emotion", "You Held The World In Your Arms Tonight", or "A Modern Way Of Letting Go"
The Cribs - "Men's Needs" or "Mirror Kissers"
The Fratellis - "Flathead"
The Rifles - "Peace And Quiet"
Kings Of Leon - "The Bucket"
The Young Knives - "Terra Firma"
Mew - "Apocalypso"
Larrikin Love - "Happy As Annie"
Nine Black Alps - "Unsatisfied"

and FWIW, I'll take "Landslide Baby" from Beulah in the game, despite the F-bomb in the lyrics.

The Fratellis, Young Knives, Larrikin Love, Milburn and The Pigeon Detectives I despise.

However The Cribs, KOL, Maximo Park would be fun.

Art Brut is also an incredible band, AMAZING live yet they would not suit this game at all.

I want some Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Death From Above (Dunno how the guitar would work though), Franz Ferdinand.

Indie Rock is utter **** overall in the UK though at the moment, its disgracefully bad except for a few bands. Indie in my eyes, in the form it is now in the UK, needs to dissapear off a cliff as fast as possible.

Yeah, I'd have to say Landslide Baby would be a good choice. Or maybe Your Mother Loves You Son. The guitar solo is pretty ridiculous in that song. Good to see another Beulah fan though, it seems like we're a rare breed these days.

Flathead is probably a good choice as well. I love that whole album, personally.

Eh, that is a grim assessment, no?

It's fine, to me, in all honesty. As I've gotten older, I've grown less critical of music and of artists. I went through my whole "music snob" phase, and have come out the other end a lot more mellow with a less harsh appraisal of music, in general. I'm just getting too old to "despise" any artists or care about anything more whether the song has any aesthetic appeal to me.

Again, more than anything, I'm thinking about what songs would lend themselves well to Rock Band. "Direct Hit" would be rollicking fun. It's got a great guitar riff, decent drums, and Eddie's unique lyrics.

It's not exactly amazing though in my opinion and there are thousands better songs to put on Rock Band. Sure it's a good song, an incredible song live infact but wouldn't be that good for Rock Band due to Art Bruts small popularity compared to other bands here.

Also as for snobbery, it isn't. It's the lack of originality or anything that is actually that amazing lately that is severly lacking in UK indie out of new bands. The Foals are kinda good but no other new bands seem to be any good at all really in the UK.

See, I am not fond of the Foals, but from a purely aesthetic standpoint. I've only heard "Mathletics" and "Balloons" from them, so it might be a bad sample, but I have trouble connecting with it, on any level. They've got an interesting unique tight sound, though.

UK indie is very much "follow the leader", but it has always been that way. Originality in all music is harder to come by. Most everything is derivative today, which is probably why I don't value originality in music as much any more. I have become much more right-brained about music than I ever used to, and I tend to like music that provides any sort of visceral response.

The thing is about Foals they are original, they just don't sound all that great, therefore to me any originality they have is sort of just wasted on average songs in my eyes.

I do try and look for original bands though in Indie music which is hard to come by. However Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire are too amazing examples although I suppose they can't really be called Indie as they are in a nonexistant class of music really. Also Sigur Ros I find to be incredible, and extremely original although obviously they cannot be in Rock Band.

I have gone extremely off topic I see...

Sigur Ros is another one of the wonderfully innovative indie bands that has popped up over the last 10 years or so.

If you're a fan of less mainstream indie, then you should give Animal Collective's Strawberry Jams a listen, because it's really an incredible album.

You've got a Beulah fan here who just dropped a three-song pack in the thread for those, but really I'd just be happy with A Good Man Is Easy To Kill.

I would love some indie as dlc, how about these: modest mouse, cursive, fields, tv on the radio and sea wolf

I was shocked to see that somebody else wants to see something by The Long winters. They have so many songs that would be great for Rock Band. Another indie band I would like to see is Harvey Danger, they're the most underrated band in the world. I promise.

Please, a big fat NO to Arctic Monkeys.

One of Britain's most over-rated bands.
