A few of those are good. Others I could take or leave.
If you're right about The Shins, hopefully they include "New Slang".

This thread lacks Primus... :)
Oh, and the list lacks death metal, but I guess that's something you do not like, and therefore excluded it.. :P
(bands like amon amarth, cannibal corse, necrophagist, napalm death, slayer, in flames, dark tranquility, death etc..)
Otherwise good list

Flight of the Conchords would be lols.
I thought these were going to be mostly unheard of bands? Or was it indie? Gah, too many rumours and too much speculation - not enough fact!

If you listed a mainstream band you are wrong. HMX has stated two known facts.... 1) the 20 songs are from artists not on the RB2 disc. 2) the 20 songs are from lesser know bands (Indie Artists)

I'd love to see songs from:
The National
The Shins
Eleven
Sloan
The Arcade Fire
Autolux
The Black Keys
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Zwan
Tokyo Police Club
One Day As A Lion
The Flaming Lips
Phildopip

There aren't any drums in "New Slang". I love that song, but I'm not sure the HMX people would go for that.

Hmm, more indie fare then?
The Shins
The Arcade Fire
Bloc Party (even though they're decently known thanks to GH)
Spoon
Caribou
SYBRIS (a local fav of mine, but they would be AMAZING)
Thunderfoot
10-20-2008, 03:18 PM
Whoa, Sybris shoutout! All for it, especially Oh Man!
Where'd you get those drugs? From a pusher.
Where'd you get that p**sy? From a hooker.
Oh man, we need some change.
(From memory, may have mucked it up)

Far too much Death Metal on RB2 as it is.

Damn. I knew they were all artist not on the RB2 disc, but I didn't know they were all indies..that's gonna 90% suck.

Yeah, all of one song.
Personally, I want to see a power metal band or two as downloadable content, especially considering that power metal has no representation what-so-ever. Bands like Kamelot, Sonata Arctica and Blind Guardian would be awesome additions to the game.

I predict that I'll dislike at least 15 of the songs. Out of the remaining 5 I'll hate 3 of those passionately and of the final 2 that remain, one I'll actually like and the other will just be eh to me.

Right because generalizing all metal as death metal really does much to tell me what you know about the genre.
You lump bands like Megadeth and Metallica in with bands like Abnormality? Megadeth is fronted by a musician who HATES overly simplistic music and is a very open person about his opinions. About half of Megadeth's newest album, United Abominations, criticizes war and even the US, despite Dave Mustaine being an American. "Peace Sells" is a song that asks a simple question "Can you put a price on peace?". Musically, it is pretty heavy, after all, it is thrash metal we're talking about here.
And I'd bet you assume that all death metal is just loud and unnecessarily fast drums, excessively distorted guitars and screamed vocals. Death metal is one of the most stereotyped genres out there. There are very few death metal bands I listen to, but two of the ones I listen to, Amon Amarth and Battlelore are nearly the opposite what most people assume.
Amon Amarth takes lyrical themes from Norse mythology and utilizes melodic riffing and drumming. On top of they, they have collaborated with the metal band Apocalyptica, a band that became well known for consisting of three classically trained cellists and a drummer.
Battlelore mixes power metal with death metal elements and a touch of industrial rock. Their lyrical themes are generally based on the works of JRR Tolkein from The Lord of the Rings to his lesser known poetry. They are a band that can go from melodic death metal to symphonic metal on the same album.

Man please. All I listened to growing up was Death Metal. Morbid Angel was in my tape deck daily. I also could give 2 ****s about what Dave Mustaine thinks about anything. I want variety in RB. Last month there was too much Indie. This month there is too much super heavy. Put whatever label you want on it, and then break it down into another 15 sub genres. I don't care. I want a break from it for a while. Especially since the 20 free are apparently gonna send us back to Indie overload.

Actually, my current sig I've had since I joined these forums and have noticed that people tend to assume that "growl music," as I've seen people refer to, is exactly like Visions no matter who the band is.

Coldplay considers themselves an indie band, but they're also the band with the most downloads for a single album and hit number one in 36(32?) countries with Viva la Vida, so I'm quite confused.

I'd want a band like Ph8 to be in. They have some good tunes, and one for LOL's was their rendition of Baby Got Back...... That and I Mother Earth - Production... that would be a crazy song to play. But where is the Pantera? *Sniff* we need some of that here.

Sigh, if one doesn't actively listen to a type of music, then one tends to overgeneralize- indie has many sub-genres as well, as does punk. I didn't know about the frontman of Megadeth's personal music tastes, and I don't really care too much about it. With the timing of the pack, I feel that if it were to arrive in the next week or so, that it would be good- not great- but good. We have had a lot of metal recently, and it would be nice to see a change.

I guess its all opinionated then, as i consider megadeth light fare, where as a song like Caffeine or Jizzlobber to be rather heavy.

A bunch of those aren't lesser known whatsoever- and I believe that the tracks will be treated as though they were on the disk, which means all four parts. Therefore, the White Stripes can't happen, as there is no bass. This is different from YYZ because that was DLC, and a GHII classic.

Who says they have to be lesser known? But I won't care if they are, I was just pointing out certain bands that deserve to be in Rock Band, lesser known or not.
Also I would not rule out the White Stripes just cause they only represent 3 of the 4 instruments required.
Some lesser known stuff I wouldn't mind seeing...
The National
The Black Keys
Billy Talent
Abandon Jalopy
Wilco
The Von Bondies
The Shins
The Shout Out Louds
Rogue Wave
The Raconteurs
Priestess
Nada Surf
My Morning Jacket

It was in some podcast I think. I don't really remember, but I'm pretty sure it was more or less confirmed.
If it's got to be all lesser-known bands (and no bands that were on the RB2 disk), a list like this would be fantastic:
Sea Legs - The Shins
Wild International - One Day As A Lion
Blanket - Autolux
Mistaken For Strangers - The National
Fight Test - The Flaming Lips
Phenomena - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Whatever It Takes - The Nightwatchman
Ode To LRC - Band Of Horses
Strange Times - The Black Keys
I Want You So Hard (Boy's Bad News) - Eagles Of Death Metal
Valium Knights - Spinnerette
If It Feels Good Do It - Sloan
Cheer It On - Tokyo Police Club
Lyric - Zwan
Juicebox - The Strokes
Black Mirror - The Arcade Fire
Take Me To The Riot - Stars
All Falls Away - Eleven
Won't Be Long - The Hives
Hurricane - Kyuss
