I just scored a PS3 bundle from Walmart.
<sigh>
The box says it only supports 720p... my TV only accepts 1080i.
I'd like to get confirmation before I open it up (wasn't planning on playing it till tomorrow anyway). Can someone with the PS3 version confirm whether or not it does 1080i?
Thanks.

That's a problem w/ your TV ISUCamper. No PS3 games that arent made in 1080i/p will play oin your 1080i set in 1080i.

I am fully aware of my TV's "problems." More recent games like Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted support software scaling to 1080i. Uncharted only lists 720p on the box, but it does scale to 1080i. I am looking for someone to confirm if Rock Band will scale or not.

Wal-Mart will let you return an opened product - just plug the damn thing in and find out. 1080i is crap anyway - you're better off leaving it at 720p if your TV supports it - it looks a lot better. I've never seen it in person, but everything I've read also says that interlaced settings get real laggy for rhythm games.

I appreciate you guys bumping my thread... but I would really like to get a reply from someone who can actually test this out.
PS: I've got a native 1080i CRT television. The only time 1080i is going to lag is if you're playing on a crappy LCD that is native 720p, and it has to deinterlace and scale the 1080i to 720p. Can we please not get into an HDTV discussion? I'd just like someone to try this out. If you can't try it out and answer the question, please don't reply.

Yes it can. The Xbox has an internal hardware scaler so all games will scale to whatever resolution you set.
On the PS3 though, scaling has to be implemented in software on a per game basis.
For instance:
Uncharted, The Darkness, Ratchet and Clank all scale to 1080i
Heavenly Sword, Resistance, and Motorstorm do not scale to 1080i. If your TV does not support 720, they will be downrezed to 480p.
So... what does Rock Band do? I'm heading to bed... if no one has answered this by 6:00 tomorrow night when I get home from work, I'll just open it up and try it out. Of all the games out there, I could probably live with Rock Band at 480p... its not really a game you play for graphics.

Hm....maybe that's why I was thinking it didn't look like it was high-def. My TV supports 480p and 1080i, and unfortunately nothing else, so if I had to guess I'd say it was outputting at 480p...

The 360 has a hardware scaler that lets it scale to any supported resolution.
Any 360 game can play in 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.
In addition it can also play in 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024 with the VGA cable.
You have to select your preferred video mode in the System Blade.
The only exception to this seems to be the emulated original Xbox titles which are very hit in miss as far as what resolution they show up in.

Your TV should scale down to 720 automatically if the game is not in 1080. My Panny does this and I run everything on my PS3 at 1080 (however, as I stated, it auto scales down on the set). If the game is only producing 720 lines it will display it just fine. 1080 is your max resolution.

460p > 1080i for rhythm games. Interlacing only draws half of the screen every refresh, which makes it hard to read your falling gems. Good luck, hopefully you can use 720p.

Why are you dragging up a month-old topic?
Also, buy a decent HDTV.

There are plenty of "decent" HDTV/Projectors that do not accept 720p input. 720p is an interim definition and other than video games nothing else is 720p native. Both HD video formats are 1080p native, and HD Cable is only 720p because of bandwidth (though the receivers all scale to 1080i just fine).
Many of the original HDTV manufactures chose over 720 because of the far greater resolution and figure it would be used for movie content which is only 24 fps so 1080i/60 which is 30 full frames per second is more than enough.
And many of us would prefer over 2 million pixels (1080) rather than less than 1 million (720) interlaced or otherwise. Specifically in music games where the timing of the sound is far more important than being the display being off by less than a 10th of a second.

I can confirm this...my TV's native resolution is 1080i and unfortunately Rock Band will NOT upscale to it. So 720p is the only way to go.
EDIT: Woops, barely realized this was a month old topic....

On my TV I play games all the time that show up as 1080p, but Rock Band will only run at 720, so I am assuming that is max for the PS3.

Don't forget 1920x1080 for 1080p via VGA... what I use for my 1080p set since HD DVDs can't do 1080p, only 1080i, via component but can do 1080p in VGA.
For the topic creator it looks as if the PS3 will unfortunately downscale to 480p.

Well this thread is exactly what I was looking for. My television also only supports 1080i or 480p. I wasn't aware of this until I launched Rock Band with 720p selected in the PS3 display settings. My screen turned blue but i could hear the audio. I had to shut down the PS3, bring it back up and turn off 720p in the display settings.
Needless to say I'm very disappointed.

Rockband only supports 720p, read the back of the game box. My COD4 goes up to 1080p. The PS3 can do 1080p, it depends if the game is programmed for. Most PS3 games are 720p.

Rockband max resolution is 720p, If your tv can not display that it will display it at 420p.
This was an issue for me with my Sony Wega, 1080i, but not 720p.
When I got my Plasma a few weeks ago it displays in 720p, but only after you go into the PS3 menu and enable that option.
Makes quite a difference, but for sure not a deal breaker, especially during gameplay.

I don't really agree with that. I play all of my 360 games in 1080i (since it's the max my TV supports) and I haven't had any issues with Rock Band. I've seen 720p and 1080i both on the same set and they looked, from what I could tell, identical. I haven't seen this lag you're talking about either. I play on Expert guitar (and have been since Guitar Hero 1, on all kinds of different TVs) and haven't been able to see any difference playing it on my 1080i.

It'd been nice to see them add some upscaling to 1080i/p on the PS3 for us CRT projection owners that can't do 720p......
But.....
I find myself having to focus so intently on the notes/bars/bricks that I doubt I'd really get to enjoy the visuals anyways. The only enjoyment I'd get is looking at how scary my dude's tattoos/hairstyle/outfit is between gigs. I doubt it'd be worth the trouble for Harmonix just for that.

Well if you have never seen it, you don´t really know what you are talking about.. so why take a guess?? It all depends on your personal setup. 1080i is not crap! If you have the right setup and source material it looks better than 720p - of course it does. But its a matter of viewing distance more than anything else.

Like hell they'll let you return an opened game. They wouldn't even let me return a book that I happened to decide not to give my niece as a gift as I had found something better in the meantime, because they told me I could have photocopied all of the pages and then returned it.
For what it's worth, interlaced is fine. I don't understand how lag could be introduced just from that. I kicked ass at gh1 and 2 on my old crt.

The box says that Rock Band is made in 720p - I have a hard time believing that your TV ONLY accepts a 1080i input, but if that is indeed the case, just let your PS3 output the signal in 1080i (settings menu). Your TV will scale it to whatever native resolution your display has anyway. 1920 x 1080 I guess. Just a matter of where the upscaling takes place really. PS3 or TV

My Sharp Aquos accepts up to 1080p and it always switches back to 720p in rock band. I'm sure it's the ps3 that scales it back.

It's complicated to add anything in a patch, especially when playing the game taxes the system so heavily already. Also, any code has to be tested and cross-tested under various conditions to make sure it doesn't break anything (code that affects how the game displays would have a pretty heavy chance of doing that), then it has to be run through QA for the system it's going to be hosted on.
So, yeah, it's actually quite a complicated process to go through for an issue affecting an extremely small section of players.
