I advise to stop the road this thread on.

I am offended by derogatory remarks made on rednecks that are sprung out of ignorance to the subject.


There is a concrete separation between rednecks (Country people, who work for a living, and tend to their own) and simple white trash (society's typical 'redneck' stereotype, disheveled, cheap clothing, missing teeth, alcoholic poor grammar, etc.)


I am a redneck, and far from white-trash, being a redneck does not mean that you are uneducated.


EDIT: I would also like to add in that being a redneck has nothing to do with incest related tendencies, or inter-family sexual relations.

Redneck simply meant someone who worked outside for a living, doing more physically demanding jobs than others, and came home with a sunburned neck and back.

However, society turned it into a negative label, and perspectives like yours are doing nothing but to fuel this negative stereotype.

I live in VA also, and went to school with mostly Pungolians (people that live in a place called "pungo"). They are about as redneck as you get. While i too see a distinction between redneck and your stereotypical "hillbilly/white trash" type of person, the truth of the matter is, over 85% of the people i knew fit that description precisely. I still hung with them, they were basically great guys and they had some great parties out in Pungo. Their list of hobbies included drinking, frog giggin, drinking, shootin SOMETHING, big trucks, drinking, and shooting ANYTHING. Their vocabulary included the entire list of racial slurs i've ever heard, and their typical sentence structure was _<some word>_ M.F.ing __<some word>__ M.F.er's G.D. Effing _<some other word>.

There were obviously exceptions. I would like to say the video was a little over the top with its stereotypes, but everything in the video i have seen first hand (the chewing straw while cliche is true). The incest stuff is definitely blown out of proportion. None of the rednecks i've known married/dated/eyed their sisters. 1 of them might have slept with a cousin, but i think it was a second cousin.
