This is a suggestion/plea to HMX and I hope other agree. I dont want to make this a racial thing or anything, but I was thinking since there are few (none that I can think of) Black artists in the well over 300+ songs for RB1 or RB2 that for Black History month the DLC will do something special. Now I understand that the reason for so few Black artists is because relatively speaking their are few Black bands but here is a list of a some possibilities for Feb DLC.

Jimmy Hendrix - Voodoo Child
Chuck Berry - Johnny B Good
Prince - Lets Go Crazy
Living Colour - Cult of Personality
Bob Marley - Buffalo Solider, Stir it up, Jammin or Redemption Song.(before you say it...if you can have the Police, Jimmy Buffet or No Doubt you can have Marley).
Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way, Again or Fly Away (Perfect RB songs...actually he is a perfect RB artist).
James Brown - Sex Machine
Tina and Ike - Proud Mary

These are just a few possibities....I would love to hear what people think about this and other possible DLC for Black Artists...I would have also included some of Run DMCs more guitar oriented tracks...but I think the hardcore rock guys might lose their lunch...I would have said Little Richard and some other RnR originators, but alot of their songs are really driven by brass instruments and piano

As a total aside...alot of old-time groups are missing. Beach boys for starters.

Way to think ahead there champ.

Also Ultimate Setlist is where you were supposed to get off. Exit 101 not 95.

As long as it's good music, I couldn't care less about the race of the artist(s) performing it.
You've got a solid list that I can't argue with too much, the only thing I would recommend adding to the mix is some Bad Brains.

Agreed on the Hendrix, but most of his songs are dominated by guitar. All Along the Watchtower would be amazing for RB.

Chuck Berry, same thing, but i'll dL it.

Living Colour, of course.

Bob Marley, yep. take it.

Lenny Kravitz, not Are you gonna go my way, because it reminds me of that dumbass guitar hero commerical. But yeah he'd work great for this game. I'd pay 300 pts for Fly Away.

We tried the same thing last year and it was a great idea then just as it is a great idea now, but HMX seems to avoid themed packs in relation to a calander. It would strike me as odd for them to start now after a year of ignoring every other holiday.

I'm not entirely sure that this could even be considered a calender-specific holiday pack. Well, okay obviously it IS, but I need to explain myself I guess.

Should they come out with a Halloween or Christmas pack, undoubtedly there would be good music in it, but would anyone really want to play those songs during the rest of the year? Not so likely. However, a Black History Month pack could simple be called something else and be released in Feb. but the songs would still be awesome all year long.

I guess the thing HMX should avoid is being "seasonal" or "festive" but the tracks could still relate to the calender year in some way, such as this.

False advertising. This thread has nothing to do with Death from Above 1979.

Needs more Isaac Hayes - Theme from Shaft.

The song won a freaking Oscar!

This might help me with my Hootie requests... Darius being the lead singer and all...

I think it would be a good way to both honor the celebration of that month and to catch up the catalog a bit with one area it's severely deficient...

Great thread!

Nope. Rolling Stone confirmed that the Hendrix family was also working on a deal with Harmonix.

Get some Fishbone in there with the Living Colour too. Maybe some Bad Brains. You could put those 3 bands into a groundbreaking black artists pack, they were VERY influential bands, and I bet a lot of youngsters and maybe even other people have never heard of 2 of the 3.

Love the response...a bit disappointed that it was moved though.

you guys are adding some awsome bands to go with my original list...so far we have
Jimmy Hendrix - Voodoo Child
Chuck Berry - Johnny B Good
Prince - Lets Go Crazy
Living Colour - Cult of Personality
Bob Marley - Buffalo Solider, Stir it up, Jammin or Redemption Song.(before you say it...if you can have the Police, Jimmy Buffet or No Doubt you can have Marley).
Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way, Again or Fly Away (Perfect RB songs...actually he is a perfect RB artist).
James Brown - Sex Machine
Tina and Ike - Proud Mary
Fishbone - not sure what songs
Bad Brains - not sure what songs
Parliament - We Want the Funk
Isacc Hayes - Shaft Theme (This is awsome)
Hootie and the Blowfish(almost forgot about them as corny as they are I must give them their respect.) - Only Want to Be With You, Hold My Hand, Let Her Cry

I think that this more than just a festive Halloween Christmas thing. I also think it is different than say having Latino DLC or Asian DLC in their respective months (although that isnt a bad idea). The reason is that Rock n roll was a style of music that started with Black artists and being that so far African American Artists are greatly underrepresented in this game it might be cool to have a few DLC in that month to just acknowledge the roots of RnR. In truth it would be better if some of these songs and artists were sprinkled over the course of the year and that game...but that might be asking too much.

I'd just really like some Funk and Blues.

WeNeedMoreCowbell
09-25-2008, 06:24 PM
it would be a nice mix...now I was listening to some black rock artist especially pre 1980...and the problem is too many acts relied heavily on brass instruments...but the acts that have been touched on so far would be perfect and that would constitute at 20 plus songs. I think getting a few in there would be a just right....especially guys like Hendrix, Prince, Hootie and Kravitz which were big time in their heyday

edit: or is Latin American month just for the NFL???

La Bamba is a song, not a band. Skindred is a Jamaican band self-described as "metal reggae punk hip-hop," Sublime is an American reggae/ska band, and while Nonpoint has a hispanic member, it really doesn't celebrate Latin music well at all.

And as for the OP, very good thread, sir. I'm surprised to see a DLC theme that actually works well. Kudos.

And I'd basically download just about anything that's been suggested so far.

Even the hip hop we have is only from white dudes (one of whom can't even rap LOL).

Prince is too white-ish for BHM.

I recommend BB King, The Dirtbombs, Ohio Players, Mash Out Posse, and Run DMC.

A few things here!

"most of Hendrix's music is guitar-oriented"

while obviously guitar is the main focus, listen to Fire or Voodoo Child and tell me every instrument wouldn't be at least a 5 or even a 6 rated difficulty!

secondly, a few more artists we're missing here (mostly newer)

Al Green - Love And Happiness

Bloc Party - Banquet

God Forbid - Chains Of Humanity

Killswitch Engage - This Fire

Body Count - There Goes The Neighborhood

Oooh M.O.P. is a great idea...how about Ground Zero from the 'Mash Out Posse' album with all the guitars on it!!!!!!!

I would post a vid but Youtube only has the non-rocked out versions. That's some great stuff.

Black History Month DLC? It's already stupid we devote a month to a race , but this is going too far.
At first I was not going to respond to an ignorant statment...but I admit I could not resist. I would like to say that I agree with you. It is silly that we have to devote a month to the contributions of African Americans in our culture but unfortuneately, they are overlooked and therefore it is necessary to have a month (albeit the shortest). Same thing for DLC. Rock and Roll was started by Black artists and there is a long tradition of great Black Rock artist. THis game currently doesn reflect the roots of rock...and it would be fitting to celebrated those roots with that DLC...as I stated before...i would prefer if it was sprinkled through the years DLC.

Janie Hendrix has said she is actively pursuing getting Jimi's songs in Rock Band.
That woudl be awsome...so many songs to just jam to. I wonder what is holding the deal up.

Although some of those artists would be a welcome addtion. I think Al Green is dependent on the brass...and as for the others....I think quality is better than quantity. I coudl do with out Body Count....they were a bit of a gimick

It's JIMI Hendrix, not Jimmy Hendrix.

He's arguably the greatest guitar player to ever live, the least you could do is spell his name right.
