You'll have to buy a USB hub if you have the 40gb PS3. Since it just came out its a minority to all the other PS3's so it wasn't included.

Just to get more specific...
the 360 version has a powered usb hub. Does the PS3 also require a powered hub...or can I just use any old usb hub?

It's fine to use a non-powered hub, especially for the ps3. The 360 hub is powered so that all those peripherals don't draw more power from the 360, which can increase heat. and as we all know, the 360 has a tendency to overheat.

yea, you're gonna need a USB hub.
haha, i've got a 60GB PS3 and i'm still using a hub. it charges all my controllers and the ports on the PS3 are for keyboard, PSEye, hub, and my USB stick.
