No im not complaining saying this forum is bad, its pretty good. I just miss all the freedom on my old UG forum. Their general discussion thread was full of win, the pit was great. I have been banned for 30 days so now im stuck using this, half of the stuff we talk about on there would be an instant ban here.
Why must this forum be so restricting?

If you follow the rules this can be a fun place.
Check out the forum rules to see what's in bounds and what's out of bounds.

Also don't necro post. Which is bumping really old threads that are not relevant anymore. Like a thread asking about the RB1 release date for example.
And no rumor threads

Well, but in the Netherlands and Belgium in this part of the people do not speak German, but Dutch. The two languages are identical, but are certainly not the same.

For the same reason I have trouble constructing a coherent sentence in French and any semblance of a sentence at all in Danish, two languages I still have a pretty decent passive knowledge of (although my Danish is very, very rusty). The ability to actively use a language deteriorates a lot faster than passive comprehension.

That's an acceptable word for word translation (although it should be 'in this part of Belgium', which would have a different meaning than what you posted). Did you use an online translator? No, wait, don't tell me, or I'll start to rant again... Let's just that say I have a professional dislike of the things, because some very stupid people think they're acceptable substitutes for hiring a human translator for a proper translation (for a company website, for example). The good news is that they always see the error of their ways at some point and I charge them a lot more for editing the text than I would have for translating it... sweet vengeance. :D

You really think that Lex? I know this is going off topic but i dont care :D
You think that passive comprehension stays longer than actual ability to speak/write? I guess that does make sense, but I think i was always like this even in school. I have no problem understanding what people are saying/writing - granted, i dont know all the words, but as long as you understand a majority of the sentence you can gather what they are saying. Heck, when i was in school, i would go around in my head watching news or listening to conversations and mentally say my response in german to keep it up to speed... but obviously i never knew if what i was saying mentally was correct german :P

There have been studies on this (don't ask me to quote any, I'm way out of touch with the theoretical side of linguistics since I crossed over to the business side of things), and they all pretty much showed that passive recognition stays with you longer.
It can also be said that comprehending a language is simply easier than applying what you know in a creative process. When you are listening to/reading a foreign language, you have the aid of a context to help you recognize what is being communicated. You might not know all the words, but as long as you know some of them and understand the basic grammar of a language, you can pretty much fill in the blanks (unless a very particular topic with a lot of specific vocabulary or slang is being used). However, when you have to construct a sentence yourself, you basically only have your own vocabulary to draw upon, and correct use of a language often has more to to with creating things than simply reproducing or parroting what you've heard or seen before... and creating things is always difficult.
Either way, it all pretty much boils down to 'use it or lose it'. I've already noticed that my German has deteriorated because I'm not using it that often any more (haven't had a commission for German translations in quite a while, probably because I work almost exclusively for the US entertainment industry these days). I might have to start reading German sites again and having chats in German with my wife (who has the same degree as I do and who's always been better at German than I am... my English is better than hers, though :D ) to bring it back up to an acceptable level.
Behold the wall of text... that's what you get when you bring up linguistics with me around :D.

Well that does make a lot of sense. I have thought about going back to college to take some german classes and get up to being able to speak/write/understand german on a fluent level. I heard companies like AT&T have work at home programs where you're a translator on your own phone for businesses who just happen to need someone to translate :)

Does that mean you would basically be taking helpdesk calls in German, or that you would actively interpret for people on the phone?
If it's the latter, see if your college offers actual classes in interpreting in addition to the German classes, because being an interpreter is a whole different ball game (and a lot harder) than being a translator or simply conversing with someone in a foreign language. You have to be very fluent in both your native tongue and the foreign language as an interpreter, because you don't have the time to look anything up. That and you either need a very good memory (if you use a consecutive translation technique, ie: if you wait until the other person is done speaking before translating what he/she said) or have to be very good at multitasking (if you use a simultaneous translation technique, ie: if you translate while the other person is speaking, so you have to listen to the next sentence while translating and speaking the last one). Interpreting is insanely difficult, and only very few translators branch out in that direction (I'm not one of them).
However, there's good money to be made doing text translations as a freelance translator if you speak German, for some reason very few people choose that language when studying foreign languages (at least over here). The only problem is that unless you want to hunt for clients yourself (which is hard for someone just starting out), you'll have to work through an agency, and they will rob you blind.
Oh, and OP, there's a lesson about these forums in this... occasionally the mods will hijack your thread for their own nefarious purposes :D. We'll (usually) respect it if you want to get it back to the original subject, though... ;)

It would be more along the lines of active translation. IE: A hotel gets a german visitor and cannot understand him and he does not speak english. He calls the AT&T translating line, asks for a german translation and they conference me on with the visitor to figure out what he needs.
This is all a long shot though. I really wish I could figure out what i want to do for a living :(

Officially, German is one of the three national languages... but there's only about 100.000 people who speak it in the east of the country, so you won't see it much outside of that region. The rest of the country is split in about 60% Dutch speakers and 40% French speakers (who get along with each other about as well as the Quebec area gets along with the rest of Canada... so not at all :D). Kids over here get tought both Dutch and French from elementary school onwards (but since I'm from the Netherlands myself, I didn't take French until high school... we are taught English in elementary school instead).
