I can't seem to play this with just a 360 controller. It says I need a mic plugged in. So a bass player can't use a controller (if i don't have 2 guitars?)? Doesn't seem right.

At least they didn't make an achievement based around using the controller... [ROLLS EYES PAST A CERTAIN OTHER DEVELOPER]
Yeah, I suppose that sucks. If you are on the 360, the best advice is to pick up GHII on Black Friday... a lot of stores are selling that pretty cheap and you can just sell the copy of GHII on eBay if you don't want it.

I like that achievement, hehe.
It's just weird they would lock out controller usage. O wellz I guess.

and once you hook a mic up to your standard controller, you'll still only be able to sing (or attempt to:p)-you won't be able to use the controller as any of the instruments...

Which is why I think it's their method of identifying peripherals that is locking out the LP, since they are keeping controllers out of the drum and guitar sections.

Yea, it's all wonky. What gets locked out and whatnot. Come HMX, maje it so I can use a controller

Doubt it.. The LP works fine on the 360. It's my personal hunch the dongle is the issue with the PS3.

I think that's mostly due to the differences between the xbox and ps3 peripheral handshaking protocols.
The Dongle is just how the guitar talks to the actual ps3. The LP is a guitar shaped controller, you can use it as a controller outside of GH3, or you can play GH3 with a standard controller.
Rock Band has some sort of extra peripheral type identity check. It knows that the they aren't just different shaped controllers, it knows that player A is using the guitar instead of the drum kit, and automatically selects the drum solo career, or segment in multiplayer. When you have just a normal controller plugged in it asks for a microphone and selects vocals. Since the LP doesn't provide Rock Band with the correct 'I'm a guitar not just a normal controller' ID it treats the LP as a normal controller and asks for a microphone for vocals.
If there wasn't this Peripheral Type check it would be trivial to play drums using the guitar controller, guitar using the drum kit, and both the drum and guitar parts with a standard controller. But that doesn't appear to be the case, hence the topic of this thread.

Point taken. I guess the 360 LP and Explorer pass that 'check'.

Yeah I just dont' think it's as strict perhaps on the 360. but that's a guess.
But it also fits in with Rock Band seeing the older GH guitars as standard controllers (with a ps->usb plug adaptor) because again, they wouldn't have the 'guitar' ID tag, so the game treats them as standard controllers.

Regular Controller -- Singer
Guitar Controller -- Guitarist
Drum Controller -- Drummer
Always. It sacrifices some flexibility to keep it simple and unconfused. HMX wanted to prevent people accidentally associating the controllers with the wrong instrument and getting confused, anrgy.
