View Full Version : To the metal haters

This is not a flame, first off. My words may seem venemous, but sometimes the only way to get a point across is to be blunt.

Seriously guys, there is so much metal out there that isn't an attempt to cause a wrist injury in less than 5 minutes. All I see on the forum about metal is "OOOOOOOOOOOOOH it's all TOO HARD its just so we get hard songs lol". I've only been back on the RB forums for a week, and I've seen maybe 3 threads about it, give or take, and frankly it's disgusting. (Oddly I've also seen that many Metallica threads in the same timeframe). If you think every metal song is an instrumental showcase that's going to inevitably be super difficult, you're so very wrong. In fact, you're epic wrong. If you actually listened to Dream Theater, you'd find that facemeltingly difficult to play (IRL) songs like Panic Attack and Constant Motion are outnumbered by songs that are nowhere near as instrumentally intense (These Walls, Caught In A Web), not to mention some DT songs are actually quite mellow and relaxing (Hell's Kitchen, Hollow Years, Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, The Silent Man). In fact, some metal is less intense (to play in RB, at least) than some of the pop rock I see requested as I post. So if you're going to campaign against a whole genre, at least know what you're campaigning against.

Hope the reality check wasn't too harsh.

XOXO,
Leni

PS: The Glass Prison for DLC! Nah, kidding. But seriously, we need a Dream Theater pack that isn't full of instant RSI so the metal haters are proven wrong and the metalheads are happy.

PPS: If your leg gets sore playing, that's a good thing, not a bad thing. It means *gasp* you're exercising. And oddly, I've never had that sensation playing a metal song in RB. Won't Get Fooled Again, on the other hand...

To be honest I haven't tried Clouds Over California and I'm not interested to try it until Harmonix adds double kick support. I don't want to play a bastardized version of a great song :( And don't worry, I'm not going to complain about my legs because complaining isn't metal. I'm going to be a man about it and whimper at the achiness.

well im just fine with or without double kick but u do have a point but still i hope they make these :'(

after I complete a leg numbing challenge i get up out of my chair and jump in excitement, quickly chug a beer and howl, knowing the more you play the more that pain goes away.

I'm against metal not because it's too hard, (Snow by RHCP is harder in the game than most if not all the metal songs in the game) but because I think it's been overrepresented in the game and frankly, I'm just not a big fan of the genre. This is a forum for people to express their opinions and preferences, so don't be surprised when you see a backlash because one genre gets so much exposure at the cost of other genres.

Khiro

As stated in all of the complaining posts, 7 of the 11 last and hardest songs are metal. Of course, "metal songs are hardomglol" but not everyone's interested in having to practice these songs ALOT because metal is a genre you have to get used to. This shouldnt be a problem. Most people say they should release hard stuff from other genres too.

And I don't see where you're going with the last part of your post. Dream Theater? Attacking a whole genre? Hm, no ones attacking a genre, they just don't feel it's fair for "the rest of them" to only have easy songs they like in the game.

I don't listen to metal, because everytime I have been exposed to something someone calls metal, I don't like it. That being said, I do not oppose having metal in Rock Band. Sometimes, it's a nice break to play something intense or that just plain sounds different. Also, I would never want someone to tell me my genre of preference doesn't belong in this game, so I try to stay as open-minded as possible. Golden rule, b*tches. To the OP, nice post. Not a flame at all. Your opinion is as important as anyone else's here. Except of course the mods and the HMX people! :)

My issue with metal has nothing to do with it being hard; I just don't enjoy most of the genre.

I can stand Metallica and Dream Theater, and that is about all.

My main gripe with metal are the speed sub-genres. I admit, I'm getting older and I just don't enjoy the insanely high tempos of many of the metal songs. I'm also not a fan of the sub-genres with "cookie monster" screaming. Some of the older metal songs with more melodic singing is fine with me. I'm just not that angry any more, I guess.

ya ok. Just because you say that doesn't make it ok to go off on a rant about people who have different musical opinion or tastes than you do.

^ This.

Most of the metal out there now is people trying to do their best cookie monster voice.

Older metal, with a singer that, oh my god, SINGS, is better than half the crap that just gets shouted/growled.

I would love to get some more Megadeth & Metallica, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden in Rock Band.

Along with the cookie monster voice, I feel like a little kid playing the drums on some of those songs - just bashing the same drums over and over and over...is it wrong to accuse these bands of lacking talent? :)

Oh yeah, metal with melodies is great too! I listen to all of it, though. I really love all kinds of metal.
I have a suggestion for you, though.
You said that you like the vocals of older metal like Judas Priest, and you like metal with melody. So, I'd like to recommend the band "Into Eternity". They blend vocals from older metal, a lot of melody, and newer, modern metal vocals.
I think if you can get into them, you might eventually be opened up to a wider variety of metal.
So yeah, the band is "Into Eternity", and I would recommend the songs "Timeless Winter" and "Severe Emotional Distress".
Tell me what you think.

Damn, I hate fake outs.

I hate it when vocalists growl and then switch to singing. The singing might be great, but the growling kills the song for me.

It is amazing to me how much a vocalist can make or break a band. :)

This is what I have to say about metal haters

If someone hates metal based on the sound they are either ignorant (because there are so many kinds of metal that are all so different) or they are a pansy

If someone hates metal because they think its too hard in RB well then they just suck at RB

That is the same as liking anything else. I like many kinds of metal, from death, to progressive, to symphonic, to power, to hair, to gothic, to just about everything short of black metal (although I do have quite a bit of black metal in my collection as well), but I also like showtunes, country, hip-hop, indie rock, disco, etc etc etc. I'm not going to say "if you don't like hip-hop, then you SUCK!!!!!" or "only HOMOS don't like showtunes!!!"

That's why no one likes "true metalheads". They're jerks.

That would be punk wouldn't it?

On topic: Growling and screaming comes with alot of power and feeling that "normal" singing isn't suited for. Some people like pop, some people like metal. Some people like singing and some people like growling. In both cases the first one has very little understanding for the second one, while the first one is acceptable to the other one.

It's really just a preference, so I don't think comments like "Omg this sucks go listen to som reel music plz" is fitting. If I told you Iron Maiden IS TEH SUXZ and that you really really should start listening to the Backstreet Boys instead, wouldn't that be ridicolous?

The problem with metal (for me) is that they try to fill in as much instruments/sounds/vocals as possible, wich makes it hard for me to actually grasp the tune (I'm almost deaf). So therefore I tend to like classic rock cause they (often) have "clean" songs where you can follow each instrument on it own.
But as soon I pick up the tunes after many listenings on a metal song I can enjoy it as well.

i actually found it very interesting to learn that this is actually part of what draws in many fans of metal, and many other styles of music that could be described as less immediate...

some people find that with a simple rock song they grow tired of it quickly because there aren't as many layers, nor as deep an atmosphere of sound to immerse themselves in.

as a fan of both technical jazz and minimalism i personally can appreciate both approaches, but some people have tastes that lend themselves more exclusively to one or the other.

it's not our fault you can discern the differences between the bands in those packs. If you label them so broadly as simply "metal" then you're going to be disappointed quite often in the future regarding DLC.

When I was young there was a different metal. Now there are so many sub-genre's and I can't stand most of them, when I was young I loved metal. The main problem I have is a growling vocalist. Take Phil Anselmno for example, he does some growling but he also has a good singing voice, so I like most pantera/down/superjoint ritual. Manson used to be considered metal, but metalheads strike down that theory. I've even heard people say slipknot isn't metal. WTH is it then? I would love more metal in rock band, but not most of the crap considered metal today. Dream theatre I don't consider metal, I consider that heavy prog rock, and I dig them. But artists I consider metal I would like to see are more of the same, Metallica (pre-black album) Corrosion of Conformity (deliverance!) Manson, Slipknot (Wait and Bleed please) Deathklok, Down, Pantera, Sabath ect.. I didn't like them at first but I'm starting to like all that remains after the last pack and 6.
