Start with the Bon era. You can pretty much end with Bon era as well. The first couple of albums with Brian were decent but after that it gets spotty for me. Your mileage may vary.

AC/DC Live will naturally cover a lot of the material they've done, as they have no real Greatist Hits (as far as I'm aware?) then thats probably the closest you'd get.. BUT it's obviously not going to have anything sung by Bon Scott on it.

Back in Black/Highway to Hell are probably two of the best in the catalogue and show some of the best work of the two different singers. If you've just got into AC/DC by listening to Back in Black then you obviously won't have heard Bon, and I doubt offer any severe objections to Brians voice so theres not really any reason to stick to one era of the band.

Personally, I think any self respecting rock fan should own Back in Black whether an AC/DC fan or not ;)

Don't wanna start a flame war here, but if you've heard one Brian era song, you've heard them all.

Back in Black is the only Brian Johnson era AC/DC that I own. Anything beyond that is unnecessary, in my opinion.

I love all the Bon Scott era albums. Maybe try the live If You Want Blood You've Got It? That will give a sampling of early AC/DC with Bon Scott.

Bon Scott >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Brian Johnson

I'd start with High Voltage. "The Jack" is one of my favorites by AC/DC.

Start with Back in Black and Highway to Hell. Then try High Voltage, then Let There Be Rock, then For Those About to Rock, then Dirty Deeds, Powerage, The Razor's Edge, Ballbreaker, Stiff Upper Lip, Blow Up Your Video, Flick of the Switch.

Avoid Fly on the Wall.

Powerage. Best AC/DC album no question. Here's the ones to get, and a little summary of the album:

High Voltage (Australian Version): Get this and TNT instead of the international High Voltage which is a compilation of the two albums. Very bluesy, a lot of the songs were re-worked from the Dave Evans days. Highlights are Baby Please Don't Go, She's Got Balls and Stick Around.

TNT (Aussie album): Only available in Australia, but contains mostly songs released on international compilations. Probably the best next to Powerage, every song is classic. Highlights: It's A Long Way To The Top, Rocker, School Days. NOTE: School Days was only available on this and the Bonfire box set, their cover of this song alone is worth the extra money for an aussie import!

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap: Again, worth the money to get the Aussie version, but if you want to avoid the Aussie only albums, you can alternatively get '74 Jailbreak which covers a lot of unreleased outside of Oz stuff. Not as good as TNT, but still classic. Highlights: Ain't No Fun (Waitin' 'Round To Be A Millionaire), Jailbreak, Ride On.

Let There Be Rock: My least favorite Bon album, but still better than almost any Brian album. Same style, songs start to get less bluesy and more rock. Highlights: Let There Be Rock, Whole Lotta Rosie, Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be.

Powerage: Best AC/DC album. Every song is classic in every sense of the word. Highlights: Down Payment Blues, Riff Raff, Kicked In The Teeth. NOTE: The original European vinyl had an AWESOME song on it called Cold Hearted Man, get a hold of this too, as the song was never released on CD.

If You Want Blood (You've Got It): Good live album consisting of all Bon stuff. Very raw, but shows the strength of AC/DC live way more than the Live album.

Highway To Hell: Another classic album, probably their most straight forward rock album. Only toss out song for me is Night Prowler (Yea, it's a sin). Highlights: Shot Down In Flames, Walk All Over You, If You Want Blood.

Back In Black: No need mentioning it, as you'll probably buy it soon. All songs are great, and too hard to mention highlights.

Stiff Upper Lip: The most recent album, it goes back to their bluesy early stuff. Very good album after almost 20 years of mostly mediocrity. Highlights: Stiff Upper Lip, Safe In New York City, Meltdown.

If you like the 2 Brian albums you may want to eventually check out For Those About To Rock, Flick Of The Switch and The Razor's Edge. all are split pretty evenly between classic and garbage All the good track make these albums worth it, but only if you like the Brian stuff you've heard. The ones to really avoid are Fly On The Wall (Only one or two good tracks), Who Made Who (Only new songs were the title track and two instrumentals), Blow Up Your Video (Only 2 good songs are on the Live album), and Ballbreaker (Meh, thats all I have to say).

... There is not much to add to the post above, a very good listing of albums. I just have to disagree with their order:

As much as a hate to say it, Back in Black is their best album with or without Bon Scott. After that album, however, Brian Johnson's stuff just doesn't do it at all. There are some really bad albums on his watch. For a new listener, here is my suggestions on the order in which to buy the CDs.

Back in Black (1980, Brian) - IMHO, their best
Highway to Hell (1979, Brian) - The Best Bon Scott album
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976, Bon) - Some great blues on here
Let There Be Rock (1977, Bon)
High Voltage (1976, Bon) - I hate the first song on the album and the second song is not much better, they are about trying to make it in the world of Rock and Roll and I just don't want to listen to such stuff. The songs are good, but I just skip them and start the rest of this massivly great album off with song #3, The Jack.
Powerage (1978, Bon) yep, I rank this one lower than most people do. It is a great album, but I just don't think its as good a the ones I listed previously. Again, this is how I feel about the album.
If you want Blood (1978, Bon) if you want a live album, this is the one to get. This is where the band was at its peak and you can feel the excitement of them playing live.

As you can see, I rank all the Bon Scott albums except for one higher than the Brain Johnson albums... but here they come now:

Stiff Upper Lip (2000, Brian) A return to the feeling that AC/DC can write songs. Brian's voice is shot by this time and all he can do is screech, but its still a great album.

I can only recomend one more AC/DC album, For Those About to Rock (1981, Brian) the follow up to Back in Black... it seems obvious that Back in Black was being written while Bon Scott was alive since this album is such a disappointing album after a string of five great Bon Scott albums and one Brian Johnson album. It just seems like Back in Black was influenced by Bon's vision and once he was truly gone, so was the attitude and enjoyment.

The AC/DC live (1992) album is an OK album, especally for fans of the band, but I would not recommend it as a starting point for getting into the band. Its more for the fans.
