View Full Version : BWT - Difficulty, Fans/Stars, Song's Star Rating?

Okay, so while doing Band World Tour, my friends and I are starting to run into a bit of a wall. Not much of a wall, but we are starting to get to that point where we want to maximize our potential, instead of simply succeeding at every challenge.

So, when our friends left for the night, my wife and I kept playing. We were getting tired, but we'd *just* unlocked our jet, took a look at the overseas venues, and decided to do one final song -- we tried "Don't Fear the Reaper" 'cause it is a cool song, promising ourselves it'd be the last song of the night. Sure enough, sight-reading it on the same levels we'd been playing all night turned out to be the death of us, (plus we were tired, our vision was blurry by this point, but we definitely messed up). We failed out, lost 8000 fans, and took the hit. We closed up shop for the night.

***Player Difficulty Level***
When some newbie friends are logged on at "easy" difficulty, you're limited in the number of fans you can gain. The same goes for "medium", and I assume for "hard" as well. So long as *somebody* is playing at a low setting, that sets the low-level for the bar with regards to how many fans your band can gain.

However, how does the difficulty rating per person relate to ...
a) how many stars your band gains for a performance?
b) how many fans your band gains?

Also, how does your stars/fans increase calculation work? Is it based on your score, or just on the "star rating" of the performance (3-star, 4-star, or 5-star)? If this is the case, is there any real benefit (other than fun and bragging rights) to playing at "hard" when there is somebody else in the group playing at "medium"?

Do you gain access to the challenges (example 4xMoney if you get a good rating, but no money if you blow it) only if somebody is playing at a higher difficulty rating?

Just what is the benefit, then?

'Cause frankly, it might just be worth it to constantly be 5-starring those songs at a lower difficulty, if that is all that the calculation is based on?

Is there a benefit to going back and re-doing those challenges that we completed with our friends playing on "easy", so that we can get a "copper" or "silver" check mark? Will that gain us more stars, or more fans?

***Song Difficulty Rating***
What about song difficulty? Some songs are newbie songs, and some are more difficult. When it comes to the "make your own setlist" challenges, is there any benefit from choosing a more difficult song (higher up on the sets)? Will it give you more fans/stars for your band?

Or again, is it more efficient (if perhaps more boring) to simply play multiple sets of Nirvana and Weezer in order to just make sure that you do well?

Or, does the calculation take into account that these are newbie songs, and you eventually start getting penalized for that?

/////////////

Does anybody have any resources, references, hints, guesses, or just general information to pass on?

im pretty sure your whole band needs to play on hard or better in order to get the most number of fans. i dont know anything else haha

I like where you are going with this. I was wondering a lot of these things myself considering I'm stuck playing with Medium players at best while I'm an Expert guitar player and decent at Hard drums. Will I eventually be penalized for not having somone capable of upgrading to hard and/or expert?

As far the song selection, I'd guess that there is no in-game calculation for song difficulty in reference to fans/stars/money. So on custom setlists, you could always play it safe and never be penalized. But certain challenges in the game (the marathons and random setlists) will obviously throw those hard songs at you randomly. I'm just specualting of course, but you seemed open to any thoughts.

So, just trying to put together people's ideas, here. The current consensus is ...

Fans/Stars are calculated completely based on your setlist's performance rating -- i.e. the number of stars (3-star, 4-star, 5-star) you earn on the songs in the setlist, even if it is only a setlist of one song.

Song Difficulty -- you can play newbie songs all the live-long day, if you like, and it won't impact how many fans/stars you are rewarded. Of course, the songs chosen by the game during mystery setlists, etc., are a different matter

Player Difficulty -- has no bearing whatsoever on what "performance rating" you are given, and therefore has no impact on the number of fans/stars you are awarded as a band.

So it seems to me that, aside from wanting to move up to the big leagues later on in the game (like unlocking some of the higher cities, larger venues, or raising the fan cap) you never actually need to raise the player difficulty above medium.

Does this sound correct to people?

Here is my observations so far:

The amount of "stars" is simply your performance rating for all the songs. So the max stars is 5x the number of songs at a city/venue.

As people have said the number of fans gained is based on performance (star rating) and difficulty that the set was completed at. (Haven't noticed any correlation to score and fans as we never replayed a set at the same difficulty to try to get a higher score)

Song difficulty vs. amount of fans seems to have no correlation, as the game gave us Say It Ain't So and Blitzkrieg Bop almost every single time for it's "random" selections.

ok here is what I know from playing BWT. I know that you can only hit 250,000 fans on medium period. My son and I have been playing on hard, but that is what I read in the book as well as several reviews and a video from Harmonix. It looks like the cash and band rating on based on the stars. There has been a few songs that I have played on hard and my son on medium to test out if it would affect the challenges such as quadrouple or nothing. We still got the challenges even with both of us on two different levels. However I have noticed that of course your fan base and money goes up alot quicker if you are playing on hard. So now that we have 250,000, I will see if out next theory works which is this. If we fail a song, the person that failed drops down to medium. I think it cuts out a few fans but we get through it. We have not failed yet since hitting 250,00, so I do not know if dropping stills works at this point but I will let you know. I do not think it will because from what I read your whole band has to be on hard to get passed 250,000 and to keep earning fans.

I'm not sure if the solo tour, on say expert guitar would make all songs available in BWT mode or not... My impression is it will.

I can confirm. I did a little time on solo guitar tour and it unlocked those songs for BWT as well. Indeed, it take the union of the set of all unlocks for every player logged in.

That's my impression having hit the limit for fans in Medium. I think the next big list of unlockables is when we get the PR Firm (Which is the next challenge), I think there's a city we won't be able to unlock without more fans (i.e. moving everyone up to hard)... That said, that may trap a couple songs... I'm not sure if the solo tour, on say expert guitar would make all songs available in BWT mode or not... My impression is it will.

I guess ultimately we could just ditch the singer for some songs to hit the big fanbase we need to unlock those cities. I'm thinkin maybe I made a mistake having the band leader a drummer since no one in our band can yet play better than me and I'm having a difficult time on every other song I try hard drums on. I'm all for practice makes perfect, but I'd like to play those other songs sooner than later.

I am not keen on the fact that I am now at an impasse in BWT simply because I am unable to go higher than Medium.

I love the game, but my wife is not 'good' enough to go to Hard. She hans't been able to go hard on ANY of these types of games (GH 1-3).

So basically my band is stopped completely because of this fact.

Why did they have to 'lock' it in this way?

I will have the same problem. One would hope they will fix this for the future.

Actually, my wife will. I'm on EXPERT for everything but drums so far.

HMX seems to have a disconnect in their heads regarding...

1. The realities of getting a band together for BWT (not frequent for adults with full lives already)
2. The realities of getting a band together for BWT that can all play better than medium (not bloody likely, again, for adults).

It's depressing, but that's how it is. The game seems more made for people who have a few diehard Guitar Hero fans on 24/7 call.

How much of BWT is locked away if you don't go higher than medium? We were told by HMX early on that the game can be "finished" on medium, IE the Hall of Fame and Endless Setlist but it's sounding like you top off really fast and never get to those things...

I too am bummed that you can't really get too much further unless you play harder than medium. I play GH frequently, but not as much as some apparently. I can 5 star on all medium songs, and get through half or more on hard. Then, I kinda lose interest in playing in hard anymore because I get frustrated and it stresses me out and I don't enjoy playing anymore. So, I will stop playing for awhile, then pick it back up and start playing in medium again.

As others have said, adults have jobs, families, and other things in their lives going on as well and not a lot of time to play games. I would say in a week, if I play 5-7 hours that is a lot. I enjoy playing GH, and at least I can say I accomplished something by beating the easy and medium lists. I am kinda put off a little bit that you have to go to a higher difficulty so quickly in BWT. I play with my roomate, and she isn't very good yet, even in medium (getting better though). I know that there is no way that she will be playing in hard anytime soon. So, we are basically stuck. We can keep playing and getting more stars, but no more fans.

I dont know, I think it would have been better to have easy, medium, hard, and expert versions of BWT for those of us who only casually play video games. I LOVE the game otherwise however.
