So I just had a revalation..

Not really, just more of a perplexing question... How is Rock band going to handle female singers? In relation to the singers of the songs in-game, and in relation to the singers at home.

Is there like a calibration for the singer prior to belting out a tune?

Also applies to extremely high pitched male singers. I don't like the idea of tying off my testies before trying to sing Coheed and Cambria.

Same here. I would honestly like that band a lot better but I can't get past the vocals. Musically I think they're pretty good. For the longest time I thought it was a chick singer though. I don't think I'd even dare to try singing one of their songs if it was in the game.

Chicks are going to dig the Karaoke aspect of the game, so I'm not sure why you think they should design it to assume male singers.

In any event, with Karaoke Revolution you can choose the octave as long as you hit the right notes, so it shouldn't be a problem for dudes or ladies.

I'm pretty sure your voice doesn't have to be hitting the same notes as the original vox, you just need to make your voice go up and down when theirs do, and say the right words.

I realize that Wikipedia is not infallible, but I just looked there, and the article on Karaoke Revolution agrees with what I am saying:

"The game does not attempt to understand the singer's words, but instead detects their pitch. As such, singers can hum to a song or sing different lyrics without penalty. The game adapts to the player singing one octave higher or lower than the song, to accommodate players whose vocal ranges do not fit the song."

That's KR though, RB has newer more awesome technology. This time around it will have both what KR has to measure pitch AND a phoneme detector that picks up different sounds, meaning you will have to sing the actual words, not just hum along.

Uh, yes, but it doesn't include mindreading. How could Rock Band possibly tell if you are singing a song on a different scale, or if you are just missing notes on the correct scale?

And you certainly wouldn't want Rock Band to 'decide' you are singing in a different scale, and judge you on it, if you are actually trying to hit the correct scale, but you are just initially off.

Haha, dude I don't even know what a scale is. Just picture KR, but you have to actually sing, can't hum. I think that's what it'll be like.

We have the American Idol Karaoke Revolution game (my wife loves karaoke and AI), and it actually does an excellent job of detecting what octave you are singing in and appliying it to the scale. I actually didn't know it would do this when we first got the game and was very happy when I learned I could sing in a more natural octave. It was quite the sight (and sound) to see me trying to hit the high notes in Heart's "Alone". My wife would laugh her ass off as veins popped out of my head and my voice cracked. Fun times!:)

Well, I would imagine there would have to be female singers in the game. The question is, how is that going to affect the game? In Guitar Hero, the singer is an NPC. The gender is based on whoever the singer of that song is, whether male or female. I think what will be interesting to see is if they will allow a male singer on stage to a female vocalist song? Or vice-versa? There's supposed to be a create-a-character mode, so if there were no songs with female vocals, I would imagine they wouldn't have a place on stage. And we know that isn't true from an IGN screenshot.. See below.

There's alot of things to consider, let's just hope they do a good job of it. :)

Right. Not to run this into the ground, but it adjusts to the octave you choose, not to any scale. If you don't know the difference between octave and scale, don't worry about it. ;)
