Safe to Patch or Not?

So, when I start up, I'm prompted to patch. I want to be able to be signed in to Xbox Live while playing and I'll need to patch to be able to do that. Is it safe to install the patch? I saw some people complaining that it made their guitar start to not work, but then again I read a guy saying that it caused the red ring of death, which isn't possible. I'm running fine and all the peripherals are working, but I want to be up-to-date and signed in. What's the word?
