IMO this are the top and bottom covers
Bottom
1. Nine Inch Nails to Joy Division (Dead Souls).
2. Marylin Manson to Depeche Mode (Personal Jesus).
3. Metallica to Dire Straits (Brothers in Arms).
4. Steve Ouimette to Charlie Daniels (The Devil went down to georgia).
5. Hilary Duff to The Who (My Generation).
Top
1.The Animals to Nina Simone (House of the Rising Sun)¨* (Reportedly while the melody is without a doubt original, it shares Nina Simone's lyrics, reportedly).
2. Johnny Cash to Nine Inch Nails (Hurt).
3. Heart to Led Zepellin (Barracuda)¨*(I'm adding these cos the bass and the drums are exactly the same to Achilles last stand).
4. Oasis to The Beatles (I am the walrus).
5. Novaspace to The Police (So Lonely).
Please don't start me with Marilyn Manson and Metallica If you have heard the original version of those songs, you'll understand why they have a rightfull place in MY bottom list.
Again this is A PERSONAL OPINION.

In no particular order
Top
A Perfect Circle - Imagine (John Lennon)
Gary Jules - Mad World (Tears for Fears)
Melt-Banana - Surfin' USA or Uncontrollable Urge (TIE)
Faith No More - War Pigs
Stone Sour - Wicked Game
Bottom
U2 - Helter Skelter (The Beatles)
Avril Lavigne - Chop Suey! (System of a Down)
Other
Mindless Self Indulgence - Tom Sawyer (Rush)
This one you'll either love or hate, but it fits perfectly with the rest of the album and shows how a band can arrange just about any song to fit their style.

Heart covered Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin, so why not put THAT instead of a near cover.

I personally like RATMs cover(if you want to call it that) of "How I Could Just Kill A Man" by Cypress Hill... it may not technically be a cover since they did it WITH Cypress Hill but still its awesome

Soundgarden - Rusty Cage (Johnny Cash)
I think you have that backwards, but I agree that it is a great cover.
I also like:
Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane (Velvet Underground)
Foo Fighters - Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty)
Fiona Apple - Across the Universe (some British band, I think...)

Soundgarden - Rusty Cage (Johnny Cash)
That's backwards? It's Soundgarden covering a Johnny Cash song, right?

My top five, in no particular order:
Mannfred Mann - "Blinded by the Light"
The Doobie Brothers - "Jesus Is Just Alright"
Jimi Hendrix - "All along the Watchtower"
The Honeydrippers - "Sea of Love"
"Weird Al" Yankovic - "Bohemian Polka"
Honorable mention:
Nichole Nordeman - "In Your Eyes"
Reinterpreting Peter Gabriel is not something I would recommend, especially if it sounds like you're playing for the pretentious coffee house demographic. And yet Nordeman does a great job with this one, sounding as sincere and introspective as Gabriel did in the original, without turning into a Gabriel-wannabe.
Worst five:
Shoot, pick just about anything on any of those "tribute" albums from the '90s. Except for the Hendrix tribute Stone Free, they're almost all crap.
Dishonorable mention:
Metallica - "Turn the Page"
Okay, this cover isn't really bad, but it strikes me as inappropriate. Bob Seger really was an up and coming artist when he first wrote and performed the song, struggling to prove himself at a time when rock musicians, especially the long-hairs, didn't get the respect they do today. By the time Metallica got their hands on the song, rock was part of the establishment, and so was Metallica, and their interpretation sounds very hollow.
