BRISTOL - If you were walking near City Hall Monday morning and spied Mayor Art Ward running across the street in his suit, you weren't seeing things.
He was chasing down a would-be thief who was seen rummaging through a bag belonging to Ward's administrative assistant minutes earlier.
"I was quite impressed that I could still run. I don't know how stiff I'll be in the morning though," Ward quipped later in the day. "It became quite obvious when I was chasing him that something was wrong."
The incident happened at about 11:15 a.m., when an employee from the city treasurer's office noticed a youth rifling through the personal belongings of Ward's assistant.
Ward said the employee screamed across the hallway when the mayor - who was working on his office computer - heard the ruckus and sprang into action.
"It was a little eerie. It was a sharp yell," Ward said. Police later identified the suspect as a 16-year-old boy. He was charged with second-degree breach of peace and criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny.
He was held on a $10,000 surety bond and is slated to make his initial appearance in Superior Court today. Police said the suspect was also arrested on an outstanding warrant with a court-set $10,000 surety bond.
According to a police press release, the suspect fled the office when confronted by Ward and left City Hall via the Laurel Street door. He then ran - with Ward in chase - through Depot Square, the site of the leveled Centre Mall, toward Main Street.
Authorities caught up with the teen on High Street, where he was taken into custody.
