so i have a real guitar now
eek.
i've played drums for 9 years also played the sax and clarinet (requirement before sax when i was like 8) so i'm somewhat musically inclined however,
this guitar is frightening, and i miss my big colorful buttons. i don't even know where to start.
should i learn basic chords first, or should i learn scales first? can anyone help

It's customary to start with basic chords. Gets you fingers used to using a guitar I suppose.

I got a guitar about a year ago, I can barely play it cause I don't have the time to learn. But I learned what I can do by using basic chords. I can play a bit of My Own Worst Enemy, and a few other basic songs. Just practice, practice, practice. And look up tabs to songs on ultimate-guitar.com

Another vote for starting with the basic chords. Learn those and also power chords, which will help you get around the fretboard and possibly learn some tunes you like.
Then you can start learning barre chords and scales and the like. But in the meantime you can do some serious rockin' with only an E, an A and a G.
