So has this happened to anyone else? I have a decent setup. I have a decent tuner connected to my Xbox 360 and a decent flat screen tv, nothing fancy. When I first got the tuner and speakers I made a point to go out into the yard and make sure I wasn't going to disturb anyone. I found the most obnoxious, base filled song I could find and put the game in practice mode. I went outside and adjusted the volume and made sure it wasn't too loud from all around the outside of my house. That was with the tuner on 60. I went inside and it was too loud for me. I had to turn it down to 50. So if 60 was ok from outside then 50 should be great right!
Well apparently my jerk of a neighbor was hearing the base notes occasionally and called the cops. He didn't have the balls to come over and ask me to turn it down. He just called the cops. The cop tells me he couldn't hear it from the street. He said he didn't hear it until he got onto my front porch. So how could I be disturbing anyone. I wasn't! From inside his house the guy couldn't hear anything. He must have been in my yard to have heard anything at all. He was just looking for a reason to complain.
I hate living next to stuck up, prissy people. I've turned it down to 40. I can hear every hit of the sticks on my drum kit. This sucks. My decision about what exhaust kit to get for my motorcycle will be easier now. The loudest one I can find should do just fine!! I think I'll be making some more late night runs to the store from now on too!!

In my old apartment, the kicks on my bass pedal bugged my downstairs neighbor as well. She was usually pretty cool, though, so I simply put a camping mat under the drum kit and didn't play after ten. No problems with the neighbors in the new place (they have pretty loud parties themselves sometimes).
It sounds like your neighbor was definitely complain-happy, though. Have you tried to discuss this with him, or are you not on speaking terms anyway? (note that I edited out the 'white' from your description of your neighbors in the last paragraph because I don't think race should be relevant in this case)

in the old days this would have been settled with fisticuffs... or at least a dirty diaper on someone's porch.

I'm actually white. It was actually kind of an inside joke between my wife and me. We used to live around mostly black people and never had any problems with any of them. We came to a predominantly white neighborhood and everyone has to stick their nose in everyone else's business.
We've had complaints about our grassing being 1/8 inch too long. We've had complaints about not having flowers in the front yard. We've even had complaints that one of my cars doesn't belong in the neighborhood. Its a fully restored 78 Trans Am that wins awards at every car show I enter it in. Its far from a junker. If I park it in the driveway for more than a few minutes I get calls from the homeowner's association telling me that there are rules against having "project" cars parked in the driveway.
I'm just frustrated that some uppity moron had the nerve to complain about something they couldn't even hear unless they came into my yard. I just needed to vent and was curious if anyone else had similar problems.
It's about 12:30 where I am. I'm about to go practice clutch control with my motorcycle in the cul de sac. I've been riding for years but you can never get enough practice!! Maybe tomorrow morning my drumming wont seem like such a big deal!

a few years ago a friend of mine was living in a place that sounds just like that. he got out as fast as possible, of course.
communities like that disgust me more than the nastiest ghetto imaginable.

To specify, I don't like them because they often serve as a grievance forum for passive-aggressive control freaks to nitpick their neighbors.
One of these nutjobs near me has rules regarding the color and design of houses... ridiculous. If it was my house, I'd paint it whatever color I jolly well please.

I live in an HOA too, but everyone who lives here is always too plastered on cheap wine and worried about their golf score to give a crap about what anyone else is up to. Plus all of the houses are on no less than an acre each. = I can blast my RB as loud as I want :p

The worst in my neighborhood wants a speed bump in front of his house and I think is part of a community ticket-givers association where he gets a radar gun.
