Does anyone know if it is possible to use any other brand wireless adapter on the 360?

This is why I like having already built in ethernet and wireless in a console; not having to **** about, buying dongles for what in all honesty should be included with the console.

Hello.
You must have the Xbox-branded wifi adapter. No other will work. Microsoft uses a particular chip inside all of their equipment. Without this chip, the equipment will not be utilized.

The only USB adapter that will work is the Microsoft one. However, there are wired to wireless bridges that cost much less (around $50) that will work. Also, i've bridged my laptop's wireless to the wired Xbox connection and it worked great.
That said, I tried other methods, and just went ahead and bought the Microsoft adapter anyway. Yes it's $100, but it's much easier to set up, especially if you move your Xbox to other peoples' networks a lot. If you just use it at home, then go with a bridge; set it up once and it's done.

If bridging isn't working for him, i'd worry about the USB working for him. The Xbox wireless adapter has very poor reception, in my experience. At my friend's house, where my laptop gets a full signal and fast speed tests, the Xbox has 1 bar and randomly disconnects. At another friend's place, it connects fine but lags a ton; again, this is in a room where I get full signal on my laptop and reliable downloads.

Odd.
at my house, from my router to my xbox is a goood long distance, separate buldings, and probably 2 or 3 walls, I get 1 or 2 bars. only time I disconnect is when my router craps. and never lag

The setup at Friend 1's house is actually very similar. He lives out in the guest house, and so it goes through two walls in the main house, across the yard, and through another wall. One bar (two if I aim it JUST right, and then only sometimes) and disconnects like crazy.
In Friend 2's house, it's all one building, but from the first floor to the basement and two rooms over, so maybe three or four walls/floors. Here it works, but when it is connected, it lags a ton.
Maybe my USB adapter is defective. That would pretty much suck, considering the fact that it set me back a hundred bucks. :(

At least you don't have my router, but you do need the Microsoft adapter for whatever router you're using.
