Does anyone know where I can watch expert drum videos? I have looked on youtube, and google, but can only seem to find a couple of songs. I'm asking because I have to wait till' x-mas.:(

I suck dick at Guitar Hero but i'm gold-starring drum songs on expert, and have 5-starred every song i've played so far (including a metallica song) on expert drums.

Expect a few vids of me playing up by tonight; i'm going to make them all fancy with multiple angles of me at once and a direct-feed of the game and all this stuff.

Heh, I like it when people put effort and production value into their output.

I saw your earlier vid with the drum-failure in it, with direct feed overlayed at the bottom of a camera shot of your playing -- good stuff, I applaud the extra effort.

I play Drummania up to the level 90s. I'm nowhere near as good as the Japanese tatsujins but I'm good enough that I'll probably pass most RB songs on expert first or second try. That's why I want to see the videos. =)

Green Grass and High Tides is listed as 102bpm. I guess there's a point where it makes you play bass at twice that speed (204bpm). That's not really very fast...um, yeah, practice more. =)

(unless it's going four times as fast - 408bpm - which *is* pretty hard. I can barely manage 400.)

you won't have much trouble, just learning to read the screen will be the first pain without hyperspeed, but yeah, there is nothing in here as hard as 90's on drummania (except for the fact that the notes are all rammed together on blackened...)

surferbill: it took me about eight-nine months of Drummania to get to that level (song looks about as hard as Used To Rock And Roll in Drummania, they're rather similar). it shouldn't take you anywhere near five years if you play regularly.

Man, I just don't see why people spend thier time and money on playing **** like DrumMania religiously. Just reminds me of when I used to spend time at the mall, seeing the same turds playing Dance Dance Revolution at the arcade every time I went there. Now if it's on console, that's a different story because you spend one flat price to play however much you like. For the record, my friend is no master of Guitar Hero but he plays the drums like a mofo and every song that we've played thus far he's beat on expert 90%+.

AdamWill
11-22-2007, 04:58 AM
mdkdiablo: there's over 400 songs in the latest DM, covering just about every style; people think it's all j-pop, but it's not. latest mix is heavy on licensed rock, actually.

mostly I like playing DM just because it's stupidly fun. there's so many songs that it's easy to find at least 70-80 that you like both as songs and charts. it also has mastered the Japanese game trick of having a ridiculously fine-grained scoring system which just makes you want to keep improving this score or that score by 0.5%. there's also a nice social aspect to playing at an arcade - you get to know the other people who play the game, people watch each other play and stuff, it's cool that way. same way playing RB with friends is apparently much more fun than playing it on your own.

(if you don't know anything about DM, btw, note that unlike GH / RB, it 'rates' you on each note, same as DDR: there's 'perfect', 'great', 'good', 'poor' and 'miss'. That video is an SS, which means it's a full combo with each note 'perfect' or 'great'. The timing window for 'great' on DM is *substantially* tighter than the timing window for 'making' a note on RB. so, yeah, even more awesome. :>)

yeah, i thought you were being serious about that, so my mistake

however, drummania kind of hinders you here, since the layout is far different, both on the physical drums and on screen. i mean it helps but it hinders, you know what i mean.

now, this song is one of like six songs on drummania i can't even *BEAT*; so that should tell you how hard it is. I can beat Model FT2 regular version with an A on Extreme, but not Miracle version, **** that.

Here's why;

1- you get to get an audience

2- you get to play on drumsets where the pedals don't break, the pads work perfectly, and the bass and speakers in the machine are loud as **** (provided you're playing on tokyo's machines, at least)

3- Drummania has 500 songs; Guitar freaks has 500 as well.

4- You get a dedicated hi-hat, snare, two toms, and a cymbal in drummania. In Rock band, you get a switched hi-hat/snare, and two more pads that mix between cymbal and toms randomly depending on the song, and a very shoddy bass pedal.

5- For those of us who like challenge, Drummania is where it's at. Nothing on Rock Band even comes close to anything above a 70 on Drummania, and that's fine; not bashing Rock Band for it, but when I want challenge, I play Drummania.

I mean, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqB1yMk7x9k the song I play there is only a 70-something; yet it's harder than anything i've played in Rock Band so far by a mile.

6- As Adam said, there's the social aspect as well, not only showing off but meeting new people and friends; it gets you out of the house.

7- Finally, as Adam also said, there's a grading scale; on Rock Band, songs are SOOO much easier with the gigantic timing window that it has on drums, whereas on Drummania, not only is the timing much tighter, but every note is rated from miss/boo to Perfect with grades in between, so you have to be that much more accurate and tighter with your playing.

Rock Band's fun and all, not bashing it, and i'm waiting with baited breath to get my new drumset and pedal so I can play again, but Drummania easily holds it's own; that's why it's in basically every arcade in Japan, thousands of them, and in many, many arcades in America, and also why it just got licensed for USA arcades with Drummania V4.

Sorry for ranting, but I just hear this a lot, about how "Drummania is stupid" and it's simply not true.

AdamWill
11-22-2007, 08:29 AM
yeah, I die like 25 seconds into FT2 miracle, that thing's insane.

should be said, though, that DM equipment actually breaks *all the time*. thing is, good arcades have a technician. In Vancouver there's one tech (nice guy named Stan) who specializes in GF/DM; all the decent local arcades with GF/DM machines have him come around and inspect and fix the equipment every couple of weeks, or every month. There's a few who bought second-hand machines but don't bother getting a tech to come, and their machines are shot to hell - pads that don't work, bass that gets stuck on, etc etc. DM machines really need to be inspected at least every two weeks to stay in top condition. this was one major reason I was worried about the RB drums, though they do seem to have been designed and made rather cleverly, prioritizing really high resilience over, say, making the pads bouncy to feel nice.

btw, Run To The Hills looks fairly tough - http://community.rockband.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=9500 . It's basically Right On Time but significantly faster (30-40bpm difference IIRC), so it'd rate a 70+ on DM I think.

deepbluevibes

Yeah, but not to the extent of Rock Band where you have pedals snapping in half within 2 days of them being brand new, but I know what you mean. Almost all the drummania machines around me (even SVGL's) are usually in ****ty condition. Going to Tokyo though, after having played on those beautiful, perfect machines in pristine condition, almost all drummania machines seem broke after that =P

Yeah, but the reason why i wouldn't rate it that high is basically because while it's faster, again, there's no note ratings, + you have star power, + Right on time has more frequent snare hits, and there's those little annoying fills in between the long streams of hi-hat/snare stuff. Still, it looks pretty fun :)

Blackened is by far the biggest bull**** in the entire game so far.

won't get fooled again is a lot harder than run to the hills actually lol

Run to the hills just has a fast snare part...a lot less complex drumming than WgFA...I think non drums will struggle more with WgFA...

Having said that, RttH was harder on hard than WgFA.

Idk though, I'm not a drummer...but I do think I am at least somewhat musically knowledgable, and to me WgFA looks like a more challenging song on expert. RttH almost looks easier on expert than it is on hard lol.

Not many songs in this game have straight 8th note bass drums underneath 16th note snare rolls...it's going to be a struggle for people who don't drum, that's for sure...

I really like that unlike guitar hero, peopel who have played drums before have a great head start with this game...really cool that people who are musically inclined have an advantage on the drums as opposed to GH where it is NOTHING like playing a real guitar.

deepbluevibes

i'm starting to suspect more and more that the songs in this game were ordered in difficulty according to how hard they would be to a non drummer...

mainly because some of the easier tier songs (epic, for example) rape me hard, but stuff like run to the hills, foreplay/longtime and now this that i've seen it (won't get fooled again) would be much funner/easier to me than **** like epic, although that's mostly just because of the bass pedal being super springy.

i dunno though yeah, i can see myself having trouble more with some of the easier songs than any of the hardest tier songs. can't wait to get my set back and play this :D

that **** is just a ***** to play.. listening to the youtube parts during the solo while taking each part in practice is the best way to get the exact feel. after that i was like.. wow.. none of these songs are harder than epic (by far) GG&HT is super endurance though. ballroom blitz also gave me trouble until i got better with the "rolls"

Ahh, Neil Pert, one of the best drummers alive!!

I think the key is to play the song, not follow the notes so much, on expert. I mean, if you hear the beat in your head, you know whats coming and you could play the song much eaiser then waiting to mimic the game notes as they show up. It would also be eaiser if they had a high hat and cymbal like on that arcade game. Just be easier for people who really play the drums.
