What are some of the most underrated bands of all time?


I would have to say Suicidal Tendencies. This great Hardcore/Thrash crossover brings great results and is pretty damn complicated to play on the respective instruments.

Still, plenty of people love Jonas Brothers, Dragonforce, new Metallica, etc. They may be hated by some people, but they get more praise than hate.

Nice list, agree with a ton of those.

Maybe it's just with some people I know, but Torche has been pretty highly rated (I'd consider overrated). I saw them in the spring, and I can honestly say they were one of the worst bands I've seen live. They had to restart a song twice, and ended up just giving up on it because it failed so hard. The guitarist fell over when he tried to stand on the monitor (and knocked into the drums). And even what they did well, was still mediocre.
Sorry for bringing random hate into the thread, but after seeing them praised a ton before the show, I was looking forward to it and they just failed.


Some more bands though.
Anathema, Black Cobra, Acid King, Byzantine, The Five One, Orphaned Land, Saviours, and the 1000 bands you guys ninja'd from me. (Seriously, I expect some of those, but Rishloo? Fair to Midland? I thought I was the only one in HoR who listened to them :P ).

i can almost guarantee that something was up...

i've seen torche three times and they've always put on a totally stellar show. these guys have been at it for quite some time (remember floor?), so they know what they're doing.

i know it sucks seeing a hyped up band on an off-night, but if you get another chance i'd go...

Balancing a commercial and critical viewpoint, these are the bands/artists that immediately came to mind.

1. Duran Duran
2. Roxy Music
3. Marilyn Manson (I think his songwriting is unjustly ignored in favor of his music and gimmicks)
4. Alice Cooper (He was one of Bob Dylan's favorite songwriters, but he's not really all that known for his subversive lyrics, just like MM)
5. Prince
6. Moby
7. Devo (Shameless plug)

I could think of more and provide reasons for each selection given some time, but I'll leave it at this for now.

the reason why your "omg fave band evar that liek no1 has herd uv" doesn't get the credit you feel they deserve, is because they haven't taken the effort to seek out that recognition. by you stating that they're such an "under rated band" undoes everything that band has done in regards to maintaining their current rating. this in turn is putting them over their current rating and slapping them with the dreaded musical "over rated" label. same goes with listing bands that clearly no one has heard of outside of a local/ deliberately underground scene. they're not under rated. they're not trying to have a rating tacked onto themselves.

so, grats, you've now ruined the credibility of whatever band you wanted to claim was so "under rated" and now made them an over rated band.

basically, stating there are over and under rated bands means that there's such a thing as inherent taste in the world. which would mean that artistry is not subjective to the person experiencing it. i bet dollars to donuts that the jonas brothers sold more than enough records being a disney channel manufactured band than most "musical purists" would believe they deserved to, but musical purists are far from the majority. hence why the jonas brothers are popular, and the people who jeer them are not.

so, by all means, since they've proven their popularity, clearly they don't have as much hate as you claim to believe they do. which means they aren't by any means "under rated". though, due to their popular status, and you rating them at a lower status, their actual rating is higher than the rating you claim they have, and thus, they are still over rated.

That is one way to look at it. I looked at it from the perspective of bands that helped change and shape the music industry, yet people still look at you blankly when you say their name.

The Smashing Pumpkins. Both Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain are extremely underrated even though they are both great musicians. The pumpkins have to be one of my favorite bands of all time and I think they deserve a lot more credit.

What you hate, I love. Almost everyone on these forums hates Nickelback but hey, they still sell albums to people who like them.... *Magical*
