Let me just say that I LOVE this horror franchise. Ever since the beginning I was hooked.

Please no spoilers in case someone may have not seen the first one or any of them (which is ridiculous see them all now!) if you do, make it black text after saying *spoilers*

I was searching for midnight shows and I stumbled across a sAW marathon :D I'm def going if I can.....gotta find someone to go with! some of my friends don't want to go at midnight, I'll convince them. Its from 4pm showing all 4 leading to the midnight show of sAW V. Island 16 for those on Long Island wondering :)

While I didn't like 2 because of the lame twist, IMO 3 redeemed 2 with its awesomeness. 4 had the best traps in the series hands down. I didn't like the twist AGAIN in 4, so I hope 5 redeems 4 like 3 did to 2 for me; I have faith.

the term "milking the franchise" comes to mind

I don't care if its milking, sAW ranks up there with Friday the 13th and nightmare on Elm Street. I love me some horror franchises :D The traps and John make the films, and its not milking in my eyes, its increasing the story line. sAW isn't just another horror franchise, it is a complete story and has deeper meanings, and the whole story isn't told yet.

I completely agree. Saw was one of the best horror movies I have ever seen. Saw 2 was decent, not bad, but not great, I would watch it a few times and not get bored with it. However, the series took a serious downhill slide after 3 and I have cringed with them coming out with a new movie ever since.

Saw was (haha) great, why'd they have to ruin it?!

Wouldn't go to a midnight showing anyways.

If it's a good movie, the midnight showing will be VERY crowded (hence, The Dark Knight.)

If it's a bad movie, I'll want my money back and complain over a "wasted trip".

But anywhoo, if you like the series THAT much, and you can manage to stay awake and enjoy the movie. I say go for it ;D.

I can dig blood and gore if it's used imaginitively and effectively. Can't quite say if that applies here, as I haven't seen the rest of the Saw series because I was so disappointed by the horribly written first film.

I was really worked up to see it, and was expecting something really intense. What I got was a lukewarm derivative of 'Seven' with tons of annoying MTV-style camerawork and a 'twist' ending so incredibly stupid it deserved to be put down Old Yeller style.

Though one of these days I should sit down with the sequels - perhaps I'll like one of them more than the original?

wtf are you thinking? Leigh Whannel is a ****ing BRILLIANT writer, and sAW has the best ending to a movie EVER. btw, I think Seven sucks balls so there you go :p If Seven actually SHOWED the deaths, it would have been 100000x better.

Edit- sAW III was up there with the original in awesomeness, but I hated 2 and the ending to 4 (sAW IV has the best traps in the series).....5 will redeem it tho like 3 did with 2.

The fact that they don't show the deaths in Seven is part of what makes it a modern masterpiece.

The ending for Saw is one of the worst twists in cinema history. People love it because they don't see it coming, but why would they see it coming? There's no reason for the twist to exist except... to be a twist!

It's like having a scene with a toaster in the background. But at the end of the scene, we suddenly learn that the toaster was in fact... A MICROWAVE OVEN! OMG, didn't see that one coming! :D

But after the initial shock and awe dies down, does it actually inform or enrich the story? Of course not. It's just sloppy writing - the equivalent of a loud, cheap 'jump cut' as opposed to a genuine scare.

Agree to disagree.....you're aren't going to change my mind on the sAW storyline/franchise and you're not going to change my mind on Leigh's exceptional writing skills. Sorry you can't see that as an awesome twist that the killer was right ****ing there in the room and the fact that he was able to have people kill other people without doing it himself. The most genius serial killer movie in a long time.

Also just so you know, Leigh didn't write sAW II it was adapted from a novel the director Darren Bousman wrote years prior, and IV and V were written by the guys who wrote Feast. (Patrick and Marcus)

Cool beans. I actually don't mind the whole 'getting people to kill themselves bit'. It wasn't super original, but it worked well. It was the killer being there in the room that tanked the movie for me. The fact that he was there doesn't mean anything, change anything, or do anything other than make the audience go 'Whoah - he was there the whole time!'.

Feast was goofy as ****, but I kinda liked it. The bit with Henry Rollins screaming "Bull****!" while being used as a battering ram was classic. Also loved that Jason Mewes' life expectancy had already been exceeded. Sure, it had way too many "We think we're Quentin Tarantino!" moments, but it also had enough charm to help me overlook that.

They are definetely milking the franchise but I dont really care because they're still among the best horror films each year. Also the twist at the end of the first one is great. Who gives a crap if it adds to the story or not? I watch movies to be entertained, not to overanalyze stuff.
This is how I would rank them:
Saw
Saw 4
Saw 2
Saw 3

QFT! Some people look into movies too much. I sit there and enjoy it for what it is. I let the director lead me, then when they change **** up thats awesome! :D

I rank them as:

sAW Great all around, best twist ending and storyline :D
sAW III Awesome ending
sAW IV Best traps
sAW II *spoiler* (I hated the Amanda twist)

There's a difference between overanalyzing and analyzing. Thinking about how the plot does not make sense is not overanalyzing - thinking about how Saw could be an allegory for World War II would be.

If I came up to you on the street and introduced myself as "Tony", and then five minutes later said "My name's not Tony - it's really Steve! GOTCHA!", would you be blown away or would you simply kick me in the nuts and walk away? As much as I love my testes, I'm guessing you'd choose to kick them. The twist at the end of Saw is no better than the one I just laid out.

Unfortunately, the only good twists are the ones that affect the story - that make you rethink the entire movie from the ground up. Shyamalan's definitely used up his bag of tricks, but the original Sixth Sense still contains a remarkably good twist. Planet of the Apes (original), Jacob's Ladder, Fight Club - all good twists.

Trust me, I watch movies to be entertained too. But sloppily written movies with cheap tricks just aren't that entertaining.

Plotless? Are you insane? sAW is one of THE most plot driven horror franchises out there.
I'll write it for you:

*Spoiler*

sAW jumps all over the place so I'll try and put it in order for you. I'm basically telling you what happens in all the movies right here so if you don't care for it to be ruined don't read anymore

Backstory:

The sAW series is about John Kramer, a cancer patient who has a frontal lobe cancer; inoperable. In sAW IV we find one of the reasons to why John does what he does. Cecil is a patient in John's wife's (Jill) clinic and one night he attacks Jill to steal drugs. John is waiting for Jill outside and when she goes to leave he attacks (he only wanted drugs). So.....after he gets them he smashes out of the door and jams Jill behind it, only thing is, Jill is pregnant; Cecil killed the baby. John gets furious and creates a face trap and puts cecil in it and he escapes. After doing so he tried to attack John but John steps aside and he falls into the razor wire box to be left for dead.

Another reason John does what he does was because in sAW II he tried to kill himself by driving off a cliff. After surviving, and pulling a piece of metal out of his gut, he realizes his mission in life; to help others appreciate their life by being reborn (also obv hes a killer haha)

sAW I: We the audience are lead to believe the whole movie that Zep was the killer. but we all find out at the end that Zep isn't the killer, John is! (greatest twist ever) The movie centers on Adam and Dr. Gordon and both try to find out where they are, why they are there and how they can escape. Along the way we find out little pieces of evidence that could lead to both of them being responsible. Then we have det Tapp and det Sing on the case to find the Jigsaw killer (John). They crack the case and find John's warehouse on Stygin (sp?)street. While there we get a clue that Jeff in the drill chair was a test subject for the sedative John used to stay motionless on the floor for 10 hours. Also after Sing gets killed by the shotguns, Tapp goes crazy and loses his job but still continues to find Jigsaw after he escaped.

Later Dr. Gordon and Adam find a cell phone and get a call from Allison (Dr. Gordon's wife) and she tells him not to believe Adam's lies, he knows him. They fight, we find out that Zep is doing it. After that we get the back story of how they both got there and then we find out about Amanda, the only victim to escape a Jigsaw's trap (awesome scene) who appears in another game in sAW II again because she was slipping and started using drugs again and cutting herself (which we find out she STILL does in sAW III)

Pretty soon Dr. Gordon and Adam's time is up and their game is over. Zep has Allison call Dr. Gordon to tell him that his time is up. She beats Zep down and steals his gun (at which point EVERYONE in the theater screamed SHOOT HIM!) shots get fired and Tapp who was next door comes in and tried to help. Zep runs out of the house to Dr. Gordon and Adam to kill them. While this is going on Gordon is freaking out because he hears the gunshots and thinks his family is dead, so he goes crazy and saws his foot off, crawls towards the dead body on the floor and shoots Adam. Zep and Tapp get to the warehouse and they are running through and Tapp gets killed.

Zep comes in to the Bathroom where they are and Adam is laying there and Gordon is freaking out "I'll ****ing kill you, you bastard ****!" "Where's my family! Why are you doing this!?" It gets dam intense! Then Zep says its the rules! and Adam comes alive and bashes Zep with the toilet seat lid (amazing). Dr. Gordon gimps out and says I'll get help, I promise. So Adam is searching Zep for keys but what does he find? A tape recorder! =-o He plays the tape and it says: "Hello Mr hindle, or as the people around the hospital call you, Zep. Do you have what it takes to save your life? You have a poison coursing through you veins, will you kill a mother and her child or save your self?...." blah blah blah montage of aweosome, and then the genius Hello Zep music playing, John stands up. Tells Adam his key to the chain is in the bathtub, but that went down the drain. John closes the door and says "GAME OVER!"

Thats only sAW I and sounds like a plot to me. Guys in bathroom, gotta escape. Crazy killer on the loose the police are after him. Backstory on the characters and finding out about the killer. I'm missing where there is no plot?

sAW II: Opens with a trap and we are introduced to det Eric Matthews. A father who is divorced and is on the rocks with his troubled kid. Eric is told by Kerri to Look closer det Matthews and she points to the ceiling. John called him out and they talk about it in the office. Kerri wants Eric to help but calls her the Jigsaw expert. He goes home and goes to bed he tried to call his son but won't pick up (they got in a fight) While he is sleeping, he noticed that the collar had a location and then SWAT goes to the warehouse again and they find John. When they go to arrest him he tells them that they should look in the other room where there are a bunch of monitors. One has Eric's son on there (Daniel)

I've never been a fan of gore horror movies, and this particular series is at least four movies too bloated.
