It does not seem to double your multiplier, so is it's only use to bring up your rock meter and bring back other band members? We have tried all activating at the same time but it still does not increase the multiplier.
Oh and what is the deal with the freestyle you do before activating it? Is it just for fun or can you actually gain points from that?

Why don't you take a look at the little symbol next to your overall score. See how it shows a 2x for one person in Overdrive, 4x for 2, 6x for 3, etc? That's what Overdrive does.

As for the freestyle, its simple. The guitars can go into Overdrive either with a simple raising of the guitar neck into the "rock out" position (unless you're like me and your guitar fails to do this) or by pressing the Back button. But as for the drummer and singer...you can't very well pick up the drum kit and expect it to magically go into Overdrive mode....just like moving the mic won't initiate it. So, to combat this as a drummer, you have to get fill-tastic and nail the crash to initiate Overdrive while as a singer you have to get silly and shout random expletive-laced passages like "get on your feet muthaf*kas" or something witty like a James Hetfield-inspired "Eeeeewwww" or "Ohhh yeaaaaahhhhhh". As for gaining points for doing it....well, read the first paragraph for the benefit of doing the "freestyle".

Activating OD does double your personal score multiplier. Activating OD depends on the instrument:
*Guitar: Tilt/Select (Strat has no select button?)
*Drum: Play at least one note during a fill and hit the OD activate note at the end
*Singer: Sing/tap during the orange OD-activate section.***
***I've never gotten OD activated as a singer without tapping on the globe with my fingers real fast about 5 times. I've tried freestyling into it but no luck.

I'm not sure if this is absolutely correct, but it has worked for me.
When you're in freestyle, there is a pitch indicator and as long as you keep it in the top half of the singer board for a few beats, OD will go off. Like I said, I don't know if that's exactly right, but that's what worked for me.
