View Full Version : what happened to classic rock in the game?

I personally would like to see more classic rock in the game. 60's and 70's stuff. Led Zeppelin, Lynrd Skynrd, Nazareth, early Van Halen, Aerosmith, Eagles, Queen, Pink Floyd, what's wrong with putting a Beatles song in the game? Neil Young, Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, some of the greatest bands and guitarists of all time, they should definetly have a home in one of these competing games. Then you have 80's stuff, which Guitar Hero series hits on, but if there isn't any Metallica, AC/DC, Guns 'n Roses, Poison, Motley Crue, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, then what's the point. And why do they put songs in with techno beats in them or synthesizer and have you play those parts with a guitar??? WTF Then there's 90's and today. Metallica is still there, Pearl Jam, Ozzy emcompasses all these decades, Nickelback, Green Day, Kid Rock, Hinder, I don't listen to much stuff from today, so I don't know about that. But these are just examples of what's missing. There are hundreds of songs here that could be put in a game, there are only 10 on previous titles. Thank you for listening if you are.

Agreed. That's what made the first game so great. Even though I usually listen to punk and metal stuff, my favorite songs to play in GH and GH2 are the classic rock-ish songs. ZZ Topp, Cream, Kansas, Boston, The Allman Brothers Band...so much fun. The best thing about these songs is that they're so melodic. GH2 was full of songs that were just a lot of the same rhythm riff over and over and it got old fast.

Classic rock is the way to go, by far, in my opinion.

Classic rock is overrated and I know I will get flamed for this but I just think its really boring and lame. Hardcore punk is so much more exciting. Not to say I dont enjoy a Beatles song or Kiss every once in a while but bands like Husker Du and Black Flag bring so much more energy. Even older punk like The Clash and Sex Pistols are really good. I mean how can you honestly say that those old guys like Mick Jagger are hard rocking? Its like how people thought Elvis was outrageous and crazy. Now he's good family fun.

i totally agree with having more classic rock in this game. classic rock is my favorite style of music. they need to put some kind of classic rock into this game. it would complete the game.

The problem is that fans become better and better and as such demand more difficult songs. This creates a problem in that classic songs are rarely the most difficult.

True, but the most difficult songs could just be no-name bands with no-name songs and I'd be perfectly content.

I agree with the sentiment that Classic Rock lacks representation in GH2. GH1 has the more blues-y setlist and it's no wonder that many people enjoy that game's song picks more than GH2's, regardless of the difficulty (or lack thereof) in GH1.

I loves me some classic rock, and it's not about rocking out the hardest (as in, ZOMG ENERGY!!!!), but about who rocks the best.. otherwise we'd have a game full of thrash punk/hardcore/metalcore/speed metal/etc. and it'd be quite boring.

I'll end my ranting with one more thing: Some of the harder songs to play in the GH series have been the ones with the odd chords and quick chord changes rather than the continuous machine-gun notes and "heavy rock" stuff. Blues can be difficult AND melodic AND fun. ;)

I agree. More classic rock is needed. GH2 got tedious with songs that, at times, were more annoying than enjoyable.

In regards to the Beatles suggestions, Yer Blues or While My Guitar Gently Weeps?

Hardcore punk may have more obvious energy to it, but honestly, can you picture yourself playing any Black Flag song and having more fun than playing Jessica? Sure, Blag Flag is a geat band, but as far as musical variety both within and between their songs, they're very lacking. It's the same riffs, same notes, over and over again, because as you said, hardcore punk is about the energy. Anything that is melodic is going to be more fun to play in a video game. Now, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, sure, they've got some really good melodic stuff...but that's not hardcore punk.

Although I love to listen to punk and metal and stuff, when it comes to playing video games like RB I want something different.

everyone wants classic rock because that's what most of us grew up with. More oldskewl rock would just be a no brainer, imo.

On the subject of possible punk songs for RB tho, here is a list that I think should get some consideration:

999: "Homocide"
Agent Orange: "Speed Kills"
Atomic *****wax: "The Destroyer"
Authority Zero: "Everyday"
Bad Religion: Sorrow/American Jesus/possibly "Infected"
Billy Idol (sheddup.. he *used to* have credibility with Generation X): "Dancing with Myself"
Black Flag: "TV Party" would be ****ing killer for parties..
The Clash: so many choices.. first few that come to mind would be "Garageland" "Tommy Gun" "Spanish Bombs" and "Should I Stay or Should I Go"
The Dead Boys: "Sonic Reducer"
Devo: "Mongoloid"
The Dictators: "The Next Big Thing"
Eddie & the Hot Rods: "Teenage Depression" (c'mon, you already put the Rev. and The Stray Cats in a game..)
The Friggs: "Bad Word for a Good Thing" (gotta give one to the ladies)
Greenday: "Jesus of Suburbia" hands down
The Heartbreakers: "Chinese Rocks" ( a little edgy, but still awesome)
Iggy & the Stooges: "Search And Destroy" AGAIN. THIS TIME GET A GODDAMN MASTER TRACK
ANYTHING by The Jam (preferably "In the City")
MC5: "Kick Out the Jams (MOTHER****AAR!")
The Misfits: "Vampire Love" "Rat Fink" (yelling is fun..)
The Modern Lovers: "Roadrunner"
Nick Lowe: "Heart of the City"
The Rich Kids: "Ghosts of Princes in Towers" is such a satisfying song
Richard Hell & the Voidoids: "Blank Generation" (please?)
Rock'N'Roll Soldiers: "Habits I Have"
The Runaways: "Cherry Bomb" (one more for femme-rockers)
The Saints: "(I'm) Stranded"
The Sex PistoLs: "Anarchy in the U.K." (of course)
Stiff Little Fingers: "Alternative Ulster" or "Suspect Device" for people who want to break their fingers and have fun doing it
TURBONEGRO: Who the **** doesn't want to play "The Age of Pamparius" or "Rock Against Ass"?!
Unband: "Pink Slip" or "Geez Louise" (I personally think it would be hilarious to put in "Ski Hat")
The Undertones: "Teenage Kicks"
The Vandals: "Jackass"

and finally, one of my personal fav songs to play in the world: "Another Girl, Another Planet" by The Only Ones. Listen to that and tell me it wouldn't be a awesomelicious song for any rock game.

Note: I chose not to mention the most obvious choice from the punk genre, The Ramones, because A) it's been done.. and B) there are already hundreds of kids begging for Blitzkrieg Bop and the like, so I didn't feel it necessary to lobby for already popular songs.

Great thread!

And I couldn't agree with you more.

I've just got to look at my high scores from GH1 and II and I realise that my best scores are on the songs I play the most, ie the songs that are the most fun for me to play and master...

Texas Flood
More Than a Feeling
Frankenstein
Iron Man
War Pigs
Sweet Child O' Mine
Godzilla (more BOC please!!)
Crazy On You

It's because they're awesomely melodic!

My best are on Carry On Wayward Son and Last Child (going by ScoreHero rankings here.)

Aerosmith and Kansas are so awesome. And I want me some more Boston, GNR, BOC, and Cream. Although if we get Black Sabbath, get something with a faster tempo, because War Pigs was too slow.

RB is headed in the right direction. Don't Fear the Reaper, Paranoid, Won't Get Fooled Again, Mississippi Queen, Suffragette City, so far, so good. This game is called rock band, not hardcore band.

Although I dont listen to much classic rock anymore, I always like to hear them because they're so familiar. I like to think that I was "schooled in the classics" before graduating onto other more obscure things. It's always fun to go back though.

SRV
Aerosmith
ZZ Top
Lynrd Skynrd
Led Zep
AC/DC
The Doors
The Who

uhh... he was talking about hardcore punk. i'm pretty sure fall out boy doesn't fall under that genre.

and i'm going to have to agree with him on modern music is alot more exciting than classic rock. all you know is the mainstream, but dig a little deeper and you can get the awesome stuff.

you honestly have to look further than the mainstream stuff. i would pick modern rock over classic rock any day, but i would pick classic rock over mainstream modern rock any day. you have to look a little further than fall out boy and korn.

That may be part of it, but classic rock also tends to provide a more 'pure' guitar experience, which is very satisfying in this sort of game.

Modern rock is great, but tends to be more heavily produced, and tends to use more distortion and effects. I feel a little more disconnected from the music playing through 'Monkey Wrench' than I do 'Billion Dollar Babies'.

Oh man, I made a set list on another thread and totally forgot the Stiff Little Fingers. They're probably one of the most underrated, kick-ass bands of all time. Bands these days like Green Day wouldn't sound anything like they do if it weren't for SLF.

Holy CRAP, dude. I didn't think I'd agree with someone's choices more than this.

A few random notes:

However, for Eddie & The Hot Rods, I'd choose "All I Need Is Money" or "The Beginning Of The End" with it's 8 minutes of awesome drums, guitar and TWO(!) bass solos.

For 999, Id pick "Crazy" or "Boiler" as those seem a bit more accesible and "Homicide" is bit boring for the drummer.

That Agent Orange song is called "Bloodstains" and should DEFINITELY be in a game like this. Awesome bass and surf/punk guitar it's just so unique and you gotta love that vocal preformance.

For The Clash, I'd choose "Safe European Home" just a dynamite rocker.

I'd choose "Longview", "Basket Case" or "Hitchin' A Ride" for Green Day.

The Modern Lovers can be any damn song. If they're in, it's instant win. Extra points for "I'm Straight".

Stiff Little Fingers, "Barbed Wire Love" has a few interesting twists to it, but anything by them would be great.

Props for Nick Lowe.

The Undertones, "Teenage Kicks" while a fantastic song isn't really a "full band" type song. "Family Entertainment" or "Hard Luck" might be more fun.

Also, if they choose another Ramones song (I'm surprised they chose Rockaway Beach", awesome song it is), it should be "No Go". That song is too awesome.

Some songs I'd add:

The Living End - "Strange" or "Monday" ("Carry Me Home" was not the best pick for GH2)
Stray Cats - "How Long You Wanna Live, Anyway" or "Fishnet Stockings"
The Descendents - "Suburban Home" or "Myage"
New York Dolls - "Trash" or "Jet Boy"
X-Ray Spex - "The Day The World Turned Day-Glo"

Any of those would be nice. Those would be some fun songs to play.

*highfive*

Nice notes though. Glad to see someone else knows who the hell Nick Lowe is. I picked most of those songs for fun-factor and mainly since those are probably the most well known songs from those particular groups (I'm sure "Roadrunner" would have alot more mass-appeal than a song like "Pablo Picasso", regardless on how great of a song that is.) Your choices probably *would* be better for the whole band experience (still in the GH mindset).

Some Creedence Clearwwater Revival would be fun...

At least the classics got lyrics to sing to, instead of f****ng up yout vocal chords by grunting 8 minutes long to that so called modern rock/metal whatever its called.

CCR would be one of the few bands that I'd be willing to sing for. So, yeah, CCR would be cool to have in the game.

Another good choice would be The Tragically Hip. Probably some good low tier stuff there.

The Who are a perfect band for Rock Band, they have a good singer, good guitarist, and an outstanding drummer. They're probably the third-most ideal band for the game behind Rush and Led Zeppelin.

Seconding Beatles and Floyd, too. Don't know much Doors songs.
