View Full Version : Harmonix not leveling with Strat & GH3 compatability?

Just had a thought.

Okay, so Harmonix's big claim is that the Strat is not compatible with GH3 because guys at Neversoft/Activision didnt code GH3 correctly for 'standard controllers'. Okay? That is their theory. Harmonix claim that their guitar is based on 'the standard'.

So with that in mind... I took my Strat and loaded up Guitar Hero ..... 2.
No Activision in sight... No Neversoft in sight...
GH2 = Harmonix.

Think the guitar worked? Nope. Same response in-game as GH3.
I smell BS somewhere.

Dont get me wrong.. harmonix is still at the top of the mountain in my eyes, but something just doesn't add up here with their explanation of why Activision is to blame for the Strat not working in GH3.

Was there an explanation to GH2 compatability?

GH2 = Harmonix.

GH2 = Harmonix, Red Octane (GH3), and Activision (GH3)

Here is the thing. Red Octane makes the hardware. Red Octane invented the original design for the Guitar Hero Controller. They had Harmonix write the software. When the 2 split, Red Octane went to Activision. Harmonix went to MTV. Harmonix could no longer code for Red Octane's hardware. The hardware (guitar controller) stays with Red Octane. Activision had to use one of their own developers to code GH3. They went with Neversoft. So the hardware maker has remained the same throughout the entire GH series. I will say it's very disappointing that the strat won't work with GH3. I was hoping to use it to play co-op. I heard that Activision doesn't want the strat to be able to work with Guitar Hero. Then people who bought Rock Band could just buy their game without the hardware. It all comes down to money.

I actually read somewhere that Harmonix was willing to make the controller open to work on GH3 "if Activision wanted them to."

I don't remember where I read it though.

GH3 apparently refused to cooperate while making their software to let the RB Strat function with their game.

GH2, while done by HMX back in the day, is no longer in HMX's hands to change/update.

Rock Band's "open controller standard" is a relatively new invention so it obviously wasn't included pre-GH3 and HMX has no controler over anything with "GH" in the title no mo'.

Perhaps more odd and a more valid question is why the GH3 controller, made by RO, does not work with GH2, whose controller was also made by RO. Strikes me that Activision did not want you to use anything but their guitar with their game and did not want you to use their guitar with any other game, even GH2

Octane is just plain stupid. If they wanted money they should patch this problem ASAP. One of the biggest reason why people buy Rock Band over GH3 is to get the Band experience with 3 of their buddies. Silly Harmonix isn't releasing their own guitar until early '08, which means that the LP would have been the ONLY option for PS3 users unless a decent 3rd party decides to capitalize on the opportunity. Why on earth would they say no to 3 or 4 months of monopoly?

I find it very curious that the controls work on the 360 but not the PS3. To me, this sounds more like a difference in how the 360 and PS3 controls work more than the makers of GH3 not allowing it to happen.

Obviously, since it works on the 360, there shouldn't be a problem. However, there is. Is there a difference between the innards of the 360 and PS3 controller aside from a wireless transmitter? Further, why can I play GH3 with a controller and not Rock Band? Does this not scream "PROBLEM WITH ROCK BAND" to anyone else? Surely the standard they speak of would be the traditional control itself and not a controller they invented.

So why can I play GH3 with my control and not Rock Band? Why can I plug in my Guitar Hero controls on the 360 and play Rock Band? Why can't I do the same with the PS3?

Also, when I say "I" I don't mean me, as I don't have Rock Band OR a PS3. In fact, I'm getting a PS3 just for Rock Band. When I say "I" I'm talking as a collective.

Anyway, doesn't this seem a bit... suspect to anyone else?

It does work for GH2, at least on 360. I know this from both reading about it and personal experience.
