The other day, the local classic rock station played "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears. So I submit to you the question:

Classic Rock?

They're New Wave/Pop Rock

That means rock

on my zune, I have tears for fears as 80's Alt-Rock, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them classic rock.

great band though, so wouldn't mind hearing them on any radio station!

They're New Wave/Pop Rock That means rock

I can see that, but this station's playlist is mostly what people generally consider "classic rock" -- Stones, Who, Zep, Rush, Floyd, Dead, Doors, Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Doobies, Bad Company, etc.

About the only band they commonly play that leans toward pop rock is Blondie, and I wouldn't even classify them as pop rock. And they were more punk than new wave.

So the Tears for Fears tune just sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of their playlist.

Classic rock is great stuff, as is the "neo-retro" stuff like My Morning Jacket, The White Stripes, and Under The Influence Of Giants...

But if you're talking about new wave in particular, then an emphatic "heck yes". I am too much of a fan of the genre for my own good. :)

Rock, but hardly classic.

Classic rock was originally conceived as a radio station programming format which evolved from the album oriented rock format in the early-1980s. In the United States, this rock music format now features a large and nearly unlimited playlist of songs ranging from the early-1960s through the early-1980s with more emphasis on the earlier hits by artists associated with the loosely-defined "classic rock radio era.

It's a rock song that is classic. Hence, to radio stations, it's a classic rock song.
