View Full Version : Rock Band might cost Sony a lot of money.

All in all for people who own both a Xbox 360 and a PS3, now that the issues with the Guitar Hero III controller (also the canadian DLC prices) are out, those who might have gotten the game for the PS3 will probably shun Sony and go for a 360 version. Seriously, which one would you like to buy more? The one on the system where your other guitar will not work and who has outrageous prices for single song downloads or for the other system where your other guitar does work and where the prices are slightly less outrageous.
Harmonix just might have cost Sony a lot of money.

They didn't cost them any money. Game companies have to buy the developers kit to create a game on a console. Your theory would also only stand if, and only if, everyone has both the 360 and PS3.

I'm having a blast owning a $1000 system (w/ games) that is just one big CF after another. At least it hasn't melted like a 360 would but damn they're sticking it to PS3 owners at every turn. Since this board seems to be full of assumptions, I'm assuming that Sony makes a little off of each game sold, which is where J-Rock (trailer park boys???) gets this idea.
Anyway, I hope all parties involved see the need to work on these issues.

I did mention it was about people who owned both a 360 and PS3. It's not cost as in "cost"
but as in "Sony won't make as much money as they could have since people will now favor the 360 over the PS3".

J-Rock means Japanese Rock. It would be crazy to assume Sony does not make a little (or more) off every copies sold. That amount of money howerer seems to be in jeopardy now. I don't own a 360 but I'm not even sure I'll be getting it on the PS3 now, All those issues are making me reconsider what at I thought would no doubt the game of the year. Now I do have doubts.

People that are that wishy-washy on the subject probably don't even own either and won't go to a source, such as Rock Band, as a selling point for either. If they do, you could say that the whole wireless bit negates it.
Since that is what sold me my PS3 and RB.

Gotta call out on this one. Guitar compatibility issues, pricing, and inability to get GH games working reliably steered me away from the PS3, right on over to the melt-down prone 360. So J has a point, Rockband has contributed to at least one person picking Microsoft over Sony (of course some of the blame is on Sony here).

And like another thread mentionned, people who might have bought only the software version of Rock Band to go with their Guitar Hero III guitar will certainly not do so on the PS3 now. All those sales will go to Microsoft.

And I'm sure Bullseye is not the first nor will be the last. I would have tought Sony would make sure that all statements made in gamer websites/magazines are factually correct to avoid any backlash to it's already somewhat damaged reputation. One could see this as just another nail in Sony's coffin.

I'm taking my PS3 back when it gets here. This is by far the biggest kick in the teeth for me. The SOLE REASON I BOUGHT A PS3 just spit in my face. I'm done with this PS3/360 nonsense. I'm getting a wii.

Ya know, it took me like...3 hours or so from reading this thread but I can see why the PS3 songs are more expensive. We don't have to pay for stupid monthly services unlike 360. As for the controllers...well I'm in Canada, so maybe they're using Americans as guinea pigs so they don't have to ship instruments to Canada when they're defective.

Actually this will cost Sony a lot of money because who wants a PS3 when the games are constantly coming out inferior or problematic as opposed to it's 360 counterpart always being the superior version. RB is a huge release for both systems and you mean to tell me that just because EA purchased a dev kit that Sony is happy and making money. This will deter Sony from making money because people will start to realize that this RB issue is just one of many issues sony has had to deal with. The question is.... outside of some PS3 exclusives.....Why should I buy one when I can get a 360 with better support, better games from 3rd party devs. I own a PS3, Wii, and 360 so I'm telling the honest truth. The PS3 is starting to seem like a 650.00 mistake I made. Sony needs to do something about this or they stand to lose a lot. Period.

That's crazy talk. Look at the facts and recalculate young padawan. Sony stands to lose a lot of money and much, much more.

PS3 songs are more expensive?
A 3-pack on PSN is $5.49. $0.99-$1.99 per song. On XBL it's 160 points per individual song ($2) and 440 points per 3-pack ($5.50).
Seems pretty much the same to me, is there some sort of new math you're using?

Technically XBOX360 songs are more expensive! :p

The higher song prices were in reference to the pricing for Canadians where all the content is $1 higher per song/song pack.
For someone like myself who only owns a PS3 I'm not going to rush out and buy a 360 because of a couple issues. I'm going to put up a fight for everyone out there like me. But for multi console owners I'm sure most will lean towards the 360 unless they want the wireless guitar in the bundle.

The PS3 is an awesome unit with lots of great games and functionality. The fact that Rock Band which just came out is having issues with getting a second guitar doesn't mean that the whole unit is trash. Come on??? I am almost sure that HMX is working on a fix for this issue and we should be seeing a patch that will fix this issue soon.

Assassins Creed PS3 - prone to problems
Orange Box - rumored to have huge issues, hence the delay
The Rock Band devs even mentioned in a recent issue that programming on the PS3 was a ridiculously difficult task.
I love my PS3 (Drake's Fortune a current fave) but the 360 is not having near the software issues. I know the 360 has had some hardware issues, but I've had one since launch and 0 issues here. Programming on the PS3 is the culprit. Going Cell was a bad bad idea.

i'm normally a xbox fan, but that's because of the halo game.
When i heard of rockband, i was actually thinking about getting a ps3, giving it a chance and see what it could.
Then they crushed their chances of selling it to me.
first crush : All new ps3, have no backwards compatibility.
Second Crush : Rockband vs GH3 problems
Third Crush : Pricing, even though it's getting cheaper this christmas, it's still 1/3rd more expensive than an xbox premium.
So i'm definately going xbox360 this year... so i can be ready for rockband here in europe, and play some gh3 while i wait. Yeah the game that just hit our stores 2 days ago... gotta love the delays on those types of games...

I hate to burst some of your bubbles, but you are complaining about the DLC cost in Canada, and the game isn't out for your market yet. So I am to lump this into other issues, cause you are circumventing release areas and having to pay US dollars? That's like me buying a Japanese PS3 game, then posting on their forum that I hate their game because I can't read it, and I have to pay Yens to buy DLC... I mean, come on...
I own the PS3 version, and you know what? I love this game. I have played it and enjoyed it more that any game since GH2. Probably even more than that game, even. Yes, I am a little disappointed that when I have friends over, we are without a bass player, but you know what? Rather than get cross and let it ruin our fun, we play the game and have a great time. I know some of you love to lug around that bag of rocks to throw, but c'mon... Set it down, get off this forum and play the game, and have fun with it...
I come here to interact with some of the great people that have been on these forums for over 6 months, and lately it's a chore trying to find a thread that doesn't have a "XBOX4LIFE" system war BS rant, people demanding a "fix" so they can play the drums without a pedal (how about a guitar controller without a strum bar? LOL), or other whining and complaining... There are a lot of people who love this game as is ( i work with 8 people, all of which have working parts, no issues with the game and love every minute of it)
With that, I will step off my soapbox, take my 98 cents in change, and fade back into the crowd...

Another PS3 bashing post huh? Hell, I love my PS3 and have not had a single issue that anyone from these boards complain about or the PSN boards. My PS3 has worked without fault since the day I bought it. As an avid PC gamer who recently converted back to console gaming, it is the only system worth the amount I spent on it. We have beat the crap out of RB for the last four days of Thanksgiving holiday. I have replaced the batteries in the guitar twice already (that;s a ****load of play hours) and we have not had one issue with the game.

i'm a ps360wii owner. i have no idea why anyone would buy a multiplatform game on ps3 or wii. i'm kind of biased against sony though because of some other sony products i've owned. long story short, they failed quickly and sony would not warranty them.

The game has not been officially released in Canada yet but, I hate to burst your bubble there, the DLC has. We don't have to pay U.S. dollars if we want the DLC, we have to pay canadians dollars. 30% or 65% more than what you have to pay. You also know the game isn't out in Canada only because Harmonix privileged U.S. customers over canadians customers. They didn't want you to run out of bundles (or perhaps, with the way things are going, out of replacements).
Another PS3 bashing post huh?
I don't see this has a PS3 bashing thread. Really, I think that most people if not all people that own both a 360 and PS3 will favor the 360 because of the PS3 Issue. It's more of a "Why can't my PS3 be as good or at least have no technical issues" post.

That doesn't really make sense that the PS3 content in Canada is more expensive. Did Sony not get the memo that Canadian dollars are now worth more than American dollars?

i know myself and 3 others shund PS3 once we saw the lag in GH3 and when i checked the demo on both systems XB360 worked flawless PS3 there was the Lag again. and not the calibraite the instrument lag. But the im out of memory crawling to 2 FPS for a few sec and trying to catch back up. I saw that on a few songs.

Well I only own a PS3 and I had the game pre-ordered....which I quickly canceled due to the fact of all the equipment faults (faulty hardware) and due to the fact that my GH3 guitar wont work either. I really hope they get this fixed...Harmonix please patch your game. I would love to buy your game but I will not throw my money away on something that will not work with equipment I currently have and alo I would not purchase equipment that breaks after a couple of hours of play.

They got the memo, they just don't seem to care. Also, DLC in Xbox Live is sold the same amount of points in Canada but we pay more for points.
Basically, Sony and Microsoft like to rip-off canadians on DLC. For single song downloads however, Sony rips us off a lot more than Microsoft.

Assassins Creed is having problems accross the board. Unlike the PS3 version though a patch is not quickly being worked on for it.
The problem with Orange Box is an EA problem. EA isn't known for making the highest quality games with no bugs. They hire a bunch of kids fresh out of college for next to nothing to do the coding. EA just tries to pump games out and make some money off of them.
Coding for PS3 isnt difficult its just different. Its like when you are making a website but you only know how to write it to make it work with IE not be compliant with W3 so they have to learn how to actually write it correctly not just make it work with 1 thing.
My brother has had a Xbox 360 for a year and sense then he has had the RROD and has had 4 games ruined because of the Xbox. I would much rather go out and buy a system that I know won't break or break my games and spend a little extra for that quality assurance.
It costs about 4.40 for each song pack in RB with Xbox but if you factor in the $50 for the Live and divide it by 12 that is an extra 4 dollars a month you pay. If you get all the packs that are available this month that is an extra 1 dollar per pack. So it costs about 5.40 a pack which is 9 cents more. Id pay 9 cents extra for a wireless controller. It could actually be cheaper to get the PS3 one because it costs more to produce a wireless controller.

I have both consoles, I bought RB for the PS3 got it home, First thing I noticed is my GH guitar wouldn't work. We played about 3hrs then decided to go online and play but like normal the ps3 needed a firmware update. So i took the update and after it d/l and install about 1hr my ps3 went to reboot and never worked again. Some how the firmware didn't install right and bricked my PS3. Called sony and all they could say was we will send you a box out to send it back saying it could take up to 15 days. So I took RB back and got the 360 ver and glad I did my wireless LP's work on it and didn't have to up date the 360 to play it. I will be selling my over priced PS3 that does nothing but update it's self and not the Game list which sucks. And I have no problem paying the xbox live fee I can get it on eBay for 40.00 for a year not bad for what you get. PS3 still don't have in Game XMB.. Xbox is alot more user friendly.

Actually, they'll end up making more money than Microsoft---They're releasing it for PS2, and anyone who doesn't care much for the online or the DLC will buy it there. So in the end, they could stand to make substantially more than Microsoft, if anything.

So you're saying that EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE WORLD who has a Wii is a kid? That's one heaping pile of crap generalization you're making there.
Not everyone who gets a Wii and enjoys it is a kid. And not everyone in the gaming world has the amazing sound system that you apparently can't live without, so they don't care about how you think their gaming sounds.

i'm willing to bet PS2 sells more units when released than 360, or at least come close.
I will be getting it just for the fact that my kids love this game, but I don't love them camped out in my room all night.....haha
I personally appreciate the fact that they're even releasing it on a previous gen console.
gamestop has severely phased out/or are in the process of phasing Xbox and gamecube.
which means ebay will likely get all that used game business.
RB is def PS2's last hooraa as far as new games goes, the market is forcing gamers to upgrade their systems for new games/instead of multi-platform release.

I preordered the PS3 version of RB, but after the GHIII fiasco (it sucks compared to the 360 version) I also found and picked up an XBox version as a safety. Man, am I glad I did. The PS3 guitar started failing - not just the strum bar, but the recognition of buttons held down - and I said f*** it, I'm sick of this lame PS3 support for games, and returned it to Circuit City. Opened up my XBox version and am having fun with no significant problems. The 4-way hub never seems to work at startup unless I unplug and re-plug it, and it's taking a while to get used to the restrictions of a wired guitar again, and the box itself sounds like a jet engine with the disc inside, but at least the game and peripherals are working and I can use an XBox Les Paul as a bass. I even shelled out the big bucks to get the wireless network adapter and XBox Live membership to support my switch to XBox for Rock Band - that's how fed up I am.
So, yes, here is yet another Sony customer who finally bailed in favor of the XBox version, mainly over Rock Band, and I expect most of my gaming will shift to XBox now as well. What a disappointment.

I dunno, I love my PS3. Sure, some devs are crapping on it, but between Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Eye of Judgment, and a great Rock Band experience I am happy. I mean, sure I'd like to use the Les Paul, but the fact that it didn't work was on the blogs before the game launched. I would love to see a patch though, as I hate the Strat's new strum bar.
