The Harmonix Rock Band FAQ says you can use the headset to sing, but I can't figure out how to do that? (Yes my USB Mic works just fine, no I don't have a stand, that's not the question...)
Yes I've tried plugging the 360 headset into the adapter unto the drum controller, it doesn't work, I assume that setup is simply for XBL Voice Communication. I've, of course, tried plugging the headset into the controller directly as well.
Maybe it doesn't work if the USB mic is plugged in?

You need to put the headset in the controller.

I've taken to sitting down and playing while singing. Maybe I'll come up with some kind of creative belt hook or something.

So in order to play an instrument and sing at the same time, you need to
a) get a mic stand and put the Rock Band mic in the mic stand as you play the guitar
b) plug the Xbox live headset communicator into the Xbox controller and sing into the headset with an Xbox controller dangling from your head
There is NO WAY to plug the Xbox communicator into the guitar and have the game detect it for singing. You can physically plug the headset into your guitar or drums, but that is only for communication on Xbox live, not for singing. It kind of sucks, because it would have been SO EASY for them to just allow you to sing into an Xbox headset that's plugged into a guitar or drum set. But they didn't.
