I would love to hear responses on this, successful or otherwise.
Please post any successes or known failures with PS2 to USB adapters and where you bought them if possible (model would be even better). If we can all figure out a working adapter we could be playing bass by Christmas.
Like alot of you, I bought a ps3 so I could play rock band (before the ps2 version was announced). This was after buying 2 PS2 guitars along with Guitar Hero 1 & 2.
I was of course expecting at least one of these guitars would work with a USB adapter in Rock Band since those two PS2 games were made while Harmonix was still on board. So far I have not had any luck with my cheapo Radio Shack adapter.

I have tried with a Pelican Adapter and the Red Octane Guitar Hero Wireless Guitar for Playstation 2 and I get the "This is a controller not a guitar" issue.

i have the official GH2 controller and a black shredder AND the adapter that fixed the shredder's problem with not working with GH2. the adapter makes the guitar unreadable, but without the adapter both guitars register as present; the problem is that only the menu selecting works, but the colors are different, ie: blue fret acts as green and green fret acts as red, the strum bar works fine but when i start an actual song, none of the buttons work and the strum bar is fine.
i'm using the usb controller adapter for ps3; i hope EA releases some sort of patch to fix this because forking out another $50 just so my little cousin can play bass in the band is not worth it

UPDATE
Guitars I have tried are:
Nyko Wireless Front Man - NO DOES NOT WORK: Barely can get through menus, none of the frets function, only start and select, works fine on PS2, guitar is seen as controller
Dreamgear Wireless Rock guitar - NO DOES NOT WORK - Same as above, guitar is seen as controller
Budokan Wireless Guitar PS2 - DOES NOT WORK- Guitar is seen as controller
Uhhh, are there any PS3 third party controllers? I don't even know if there are. Short of the Les Paul

Hello Phi,
Thanks for contacting EA Technical Support! I do apologize for the inconvenience you're experiencing with the game right now. I understand you're having issue with Rock Band for the PS 3, and I know how frustrating that is. Rest assured that I would try my very best to assist you resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
Rock Band is compatible with most third party peripherals. While the Rock Band hardware is the only hardware guaranteed to work with the game, Harmonix has an open platform philosophy of enabling the Rock Band Software to work with as many third party peripherals as possible. PlayStation 2 peripherals are generally compatible but may require a 3rd party adapter to function properly. In these cases, the Pelican adapter is recommended.
Unfortunately, the Guitar Hero 3 Les Paul is not compatible.
I hope that the information I have given will be of service with you.
Should you require further assistance about this or any Electronic Arts games in the future please visit our website and review our extensive Self Help knowledgebase (http://support.ea.com).

so maybe the wired guitars work under the right conditions; the main problems are the wireless controllers right?

That's BS. Many people have tried many PS2 controllers with the Pelican adapter, with no luck. The game just detects the guitar as a SIXAXIS controller.

So i went out ignorantly and got a pelican adapter after the rep suggested it to only to find out it does not work along with everyone else (the hardway) and wrote to EA again here is their response:
Hi Phi,
Thanks for updating us on the issue. We've stated many times that Rock Band supports an open standard. What does that mean? It means that Rock Band supports the same system that drives a basic PS3 or Xbox 360 controller or peripheral.
If your controller or peripheral doesn't work with Rock Band, it is because the manufacturer doesn't support the standard controller configuration. In other words, if a peripheral or controller doesn't work with Rock Band, then the manufacturer has done something to prevent it from working with Rock Band by changing how the device "talks" to either a PS3 or Xbox 360.
If any controller or peripheral manufacturer wants their product to work with Rock Band, we promise to work with them to create a patch or adapter to make it work.
We also want you to know that we are working to get stand-alone Rock Band Guitars, Drums and Microphones to the market as soon as possible. In addition to rounding out the band with a second guitar, Rock Band supports guitar vs. guitar, drum vs. drum and vocal vs. vocal modes.
===========================================
With regards to the patch you were inquiring about, the details of how decisions are made regarding such things as product contents and updates are not available to customer support, so unfortunately it is not a discussion I can engage in.

they better make a patch and not a freaking adapter, none of us should be spending more and more money on single-task/game products.

My favourite part is:
If your controller or peripheral doesn't work with Rock Band, it is because the manufacturer doesn't support the standard controller configuration. In other words, if a peripheral or controller doesn't work with Rock Band, then the manufacturer has done something to prevent it from working with Rock Band by changing how the device "talks" to either a PS3 or Xbox 360.
I guess Sony doesn't support the standard controller configuration with the SIXAXIS (the standard and official controller for the PS3), since you can't play the game with it. Keep shovelling poo Harmonix.

I appreciate you guys checking up on guitars and posting results, especially you Xervai.
It's more than a little frustrating that the customer support team would recommend a controller adapter after members in the forum had already tested it and shown that it doesn't work.
Hopefully the documentation of that failure will at least bring it to their attention.
Personally, I'm really close to trying to sell my copy. Along with wireless interference issues and having to constantly recompensate for lag (probably an issue with my tv), I've found playing the game to be unexpectedly frustrating. Maybe if they can come out with a patch soon enough I'll change my mind.
