Still a ripoff as far as hard drives go, but not too bad for those who are running out of HDD space due to awesome RB DLC.

You can get a Seagate 320GB Laptop hard drive (2.5" hard drive) for $105 and use it to replace it with the existing PS3 hard drive. No need for something like this where you are limited to what Micro$oft puts out.
Watch out though, even though there is a 500gb laptop hard drive (2.5" hard drive) available, apparently it is slightly different in size from the 320gb and smaller drives and will not fit in the PS3.
Seagate 320gb hard drive: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=31937&vpn=ST9320320AS&manufacture=Seagate
One other thing, make sure you get a 5400rpm hard drive as the faster 7200rpm ones generate too much heat.
As much as you Xbox360 people might hate it, Sony has Micro$oft beat in the HDD capacity limit area.

from the article: "hell, if MS would just cut the price on that ridiculous $149 120GB unit, we'd be all smiles."
My thoughts exactly.

I'm the same as the above poster. I do like the fact that the 60gb will be available separately now.. and $99 isn't THAT bad considering it comes with a 3 month gold card. I'd still love to snag the 120gb, but not until the price for that drops. $149 is ridiculous

Microsoft's storage system on Xbox 360 is and always has been just ridiculous. First they allow people on a budget the ability to get the console with no HDD for about $100 less than everybody else with the promise that those people can game while saving to memory cards. The problem here is that these memory cards are damned expensive. The only memory card currently in production is the 512MB card, which is $50 by itself. $100 will get you one whole gigabyte of space if you go that route. That's crazy. The 20GB HDD by itself was around $100 with the 120GB being $150, which hasn't changed at all to this day. Anybody who got a Core/Arcade and eventually upgraded payed a lot more money in the long run. This is how Microsoft works with the 360 and I hate it. There's no cheap way around getting a full-featured Xbox 360 short of throwing down the hundreds for an Elite. (and even then you still have to spend hundreds more on accessories like controllers and wi-fi)
This bundle is a small ray of light...but just a very small one. 60GB is decent and at least you get three months of Live and a headset with it. Buying the Live and the headset standalone is about $45. I might pick this package up if my 20GB ever runs that low, though I have a feeling that I'd be better off just selling my whole console and buying a new Pro or Elite, since back when I bought my Premium it costed as much as the Elite does now and my Premium doesn't have an HDMI port which I really, really want.
God knows as soon as I buy a second 360, Microsoft will release a new Elite that has wi-fi integrated into it for no extra cost, which would make me ANGRY. The wi-fi adaptor for Xbox 360 is *STILL* $100 anywhere you go, and I've been waiting all this time for it to drop in price. Dammit, Microsoft! Cut the prices on your accessories for once!

Hmm.. I'll have to look into that. I would assume you could do a recover gamertag to be able to redownload everything you've previously paid for?

If you guys would search a little there is a 120GB Western Digital Drive you can buy for around $60 and with some software that is freely available you can modify this drive into an xbox 120GB drive. I have done this and it only cost me around $57 total to have 120GB.
Here is the article that tells you how to do it...
http://www.pcworld.com/article/150970/upgrade_your_xbox_360s_hard_drive_on_the_cheap.htm l
FTA's comments:
I did this back in August and I haven't been banned.
Anyway, read the tutorial I wrote. It's much more comprehensive, tells you where to get the software you need, and shows you how to transfer your data from your existing drive.

So guys how much are 20GB HDDS now, without the Special program, since i do not qualify.
20GB HDDS go retail for 100 bucks, but with this package, im sure they are going to cut the price.

I do want to say something for anyone here with a 20GB hard drive who was hoping to use this for more space - it doesn't come with the data transfer cable like the 120GB hard drive does. It sounds like it's pretty much intended for people who don't already have a hard drive for their 360. It would work if you know somebody who has the 120GB drive and the transfer cable though.
I bit the bullet and bought the 120GB drive last night. I definitely have no problems buying Seagate drives like that tutorial link mentioned (I heart Seagate drives, actually) but I don't want to risk having my 360 banned from Xbox Live, seeing as that's technically modding your 360.

With the fall update coming out soon that will allow you to install games to the harddrive, I'm hoping that Microsoft will release a drive bigger than the current 120 GB. 120 GB of 360 games would fill up quick.

Just install the ones you play a lot, like Rock Band. :D

Wow. I get to be the PS3 guy in an M$ forum for once instead of the other way around.
I knew the PS3 was worth it despite the higher price tag because of the HDD stuff and the various options available. I didn't realize it was that rough on everyone buying the cheaper/smaller HDD XBoxes. Also, PS3s have an easily upgradeable HDD, including instructions on how to do it with the system.
I can't believe M$ would ban you for replacing your hard drive. It's your machine, you should be able to do what you want. I can see banning you from multiplayer if you speed the machine up since that might give you an unfair advantage. But HDD upgrades are a part of daily living now.
Being an M$ product, I would think it should work about the same as a PC. I know it's easily moddable with software so you can probably find/write a cloaking program that wouldn't tell M$ it was modded.

BTW, there was not trolling intended there. It seems the console wars on these forums are finally dying down a bit and I like it. I really feel for youguys. It proves no console is perfect though. At least you have HMX supporting your console. It's more than we have.

How is $99 for 60gb a deal and $50 more for TWICE the storage a "rip off"?
Get a job.

I started downloading right before I went to bed and then xbox will continue to download after you have turned the console off. So when I woke up in the AM all my DLC was there.
I thought you can only queue up like six things for download. When you have bought every single song it's going to take a little more interaction than that.

the ps3 uses a 2.5" sata hdd
if you're running out of room, then go buy a bigger hdd
$99 will buy you 400gb of storage @ the egg

why is microsoft even allowed to ar us when it comes to hdd storage?
there isn't anything special about their drives yet they go for a premium
i can pop down to my local pc shop and get an oem 500gb hdd for $60 - namebrand, no cheap knockoffs
or full tb of storage for $120
let's see, 60gb for $99 or 1000gb for $120
come on microsoft... i know you lose money on the hardware, but this is a little silly..

As far as moving over data to the new drive I keep all my save games and profiles on my memory card then I just redownloaded all my DLC. I started downloading right before I went to bed and then xbox will continue to download after you have turned the console off. So when I woke up in the AM all my DLC was there.
That's a pain in the arse though. You can only queue up 6 things at a time. I have 73 songs plus my 55 RB1 songs plus some Xbox Live Arcade games plus other crap. It'd take forever.
And cracking open my PC to get access to the SATA ports is annoying too. :p
I'm not hurting for money so I'd rather be lazy and just buy the drive that comes with the cable. :D Probably better in a way to have all that space because I fully intend to install several games when NXE comes out.

Agreed. $130 MS Drive from Amazon >> $70 WD Drive + Hack Time + Risk of Data Corruption + Risk of future XBLive problems.
People on the linked threads have exhibited varying degrees of problems with the WD Drive procedure, including one person who specifically said all his Rock Band save data became unusable. Not worth the hassle just to save only a modest amount of money in my opinion.
When the MS 120G drive came, all I had to do was plug it in, go do something else for an hour while the 360 copied my data, then done. Completely painless and everything works just as it did before. Except now I'm eagerly awaiting the ability to put Rock Band 2 on my HDD instead of dreading that I might not have enough room to do so :) .

IMHO, MS is stupid on hard drive pricing.

I'll pass on this one. I already have a headset, all the wires I need and XBL Gold, so I'll just do what I was planning and pay the extra $50 for the 120 gig harddrive.
