I cannot stand overly simplistic synthetic rhythm sections. One reason I hate pop so much. There's just no depth, so when I dive into the music, expecting some measure of complexity, I end up cracking my head open on the bottom relatively quickly because of how shallow it sounds. With a simple rhythm section, I can at least wrap my head around drum sound and which drums are being hit along with distinguishing a bass line from the mix. With most pop tunes, there's NOTHING for me to grasp. It's all too clean, simple and emotionless and that sound is like nails against a chalkboard to me (which, in retrospect, might be better since it could be used well as ambience).
Oh, by the way, nice title, there, a21Schizoidman a.k.a. the "Prog-nosticator", haha

I don't like overly technical pieces of music. Most extremely technical musicians sound like emotionless robots to me; in my opinion, there's little point in playing music if you can't play from your heart, and not from your brain.
I'm one of them "there is beauty in simplicity" folks.

i typically lean towards the more simplistic/minimalist stuff, but neither particularly jump out at me when listening to music unless that's there is to it (in which case i probably hate it).
that said, when recording my own music i tend to go with layering a possibly excessive amount of tracks over one another because while i'm definitely not a perfectionist, i do have LOTS of trouble deciding that something is "done".
my latest recordings have caused me to really focus on keeping things more stripped-down, along with trying to sing and not coat my voice in effects.

I'm a casual Tool fan. Every time I say that, someone always says, "Dude, that's not possible!"
I can't stand pretentious fans of any band, even bands I like and especially bands I don't like.
I think that if most of the singers in popular music died, honestly, no one would care, because there would be a legion of talentless drones to follow them in their path of mediocrity.
And I can't stand people who go "You don't like *insert pop-rock band here*?!? You should listen to them more, you'll like them!" Actually, I was really into pop-rock at one time, so yes, I've listened to them and yes, I don't like them. With pop-rock, you've heard all you're going to hear the first time you hear it. With other kinds of rock music, you hear this cool lyric here, or this guitar solo here, or how the bassline went, or other elements you missed before, and it gets better with every listen because of that. It just gets on my nerves.
That's not to say that I think that all pop-rock is bad. I do have a few guilty pleasures... that I'm NOT going to say.

Hm, I don't think I've ever actually talked to a pretentious Coheed and Cambria fan... well, one.
i'd imagine it's the "bad apple syndrome", but i still can't help but make the association.
i feel similarly about people who barely skim the more popular edges of any style of music and become obsessive about it (black metal obsessives who are only aware of dimmu borgir and cradle of filth, "diehard punx" who are aware of three punk bands, etc.).
i'm perfectly fine with people only knowing the more popular bands of a genre, but when they act like they live and breathe the genre it really turns me off, though i can rest assured they'll either eventually get more into the music or just go away eventually due to lack of genuine interest.

Even after listening to many Zeppelin songs on the radio (My station loves Zep, even having Zep in the name, (KZEP) so they play it often and sometimes devote entire days to Zeppelin songs.) I still don't know what the big deal is about this band. I don't dislike them, but my attitude is always a nuclear sized MEH. I even find, as a drummer, Moby Dicks drum solo to be bland and boring. They've never WOW'd me, ever, simplistically or not.
I believe Coheed and Cambria (sp?) would be a good band if they had a different singer. I don't mind high voices, but his breaks goes above and beyond annoying.
Even as a die hard Rush fan, I can hardly stand Geddy singing some older tracks, like Temples of Syrinx (and other related 2112 sections), and Hemispheres in particular.

Dream Theater is highly overrated, it's like listening to classical music, but much more boring and repetitive, It's like they totally ignore the last couple of centuries of musical progress, and I also hate it when they cut a song off just before the tension resolves like they think it's clever, but they do it in a way that implies resolution so heavily that it has the exact same effect.

Well, each member was very top of the chain when they first emerged, Pete Townshend is often hailed as one of the greatest lyric writers of all time, Keith Moon had a completely different style of drumming, etc...
As for John Entwistle, many of his basslines were downplayed in the mixes. He really shines live.

I know I am going to get beat for this but..
I listened to Opeth, and I don't get why every one loves them; To me they just seem like an ordinary ProgDeath/Melodic Death metal band.
Also the same goes for Tool and Muse; I just don't get why EVERYONE hails them as gods..
And I also think that Metallica's version of Remember Tomorrow is better than Opeth's(And not just because I love Metallica. Mainly because Opeth's version sounds almost the same as IM's but sped up, and Metallica add their own twist on their version)

I don't know... even if, say, a metal fanatic listens to exclusively metal, he's still probably "better" musically than a casual music fan who downloads a few rap singles every couple of weeks on itunes, listens to them, and repeats the process.
I'm watching the show Supergroup right now, and I have new-found respect for Jason Bonham. He's the only one who showed self control and didn't seem like a drunken, washed up, has-been.
I saw Foreigner earlier this year, and Jason Bonham was with them. Everyone was looking at the flashy singer, but I couldn't help but look at him... he was very good. Had a lot of John-esque fills, and even had a solo in the vein of Moby Dick.

"I can think of many things Metallica do better than Megadeth."
Explain that.
This is my opinion mixed with simple analysis of the music.
-Metallica usually have longer songs. While this seems trivial, one of the characteristic elements of Thrash metal is the length. Thrash would often extend the length of their songs, to fit in multiple time signatures, and to help escape mainstream cliche's.
- Metallica generally have much more distorted instruments, another huge characteristic of Thrash metal.
- Metallica usually contains harsher, deeper vocals, as compared to the much higher pitched vocal style of the early Dave Mustaine.
- Metallica usually have better written lyrics.
- Metallica arguably recorded one of the first Thrash records, although much of it was thanks to Dave Mustaine.
- Metallica seems to change tempo's more frequently, although that is definitely up for debate.
Of course, I can say many things that Megadeth do better than Metallica.

The first year of eligibility for a band or artist is 25 years after the release of their debut album, Metallica's "Kill 'em All" was released in 1983 (the same year as SRV's Texas Flood), making 2008 (25 years later) their first year of eligibility. Also, SRV is very well known, and one would think that the fact that he's passed would influence the nomination, but apparently a new album release outweighs a loss of life.
Also, who the hell are the Dave Clark Five?

No, among everyone. SRV is mostly known in the Blues-Rock Community, with much acclaim for his guitar abilities.
Metallica had all of their albums after Puppets score in the top 10, and definitly are more known than SRV.
Metallica are in the Legends of Rock book. SRV isn't.

I do have to agree with the Shiz, there are TONS of metalheads that are inspired by Stevie, as much as I am. Stevie wasn't just known in the blues community.
And Shiz, I would do the endless set list, but I just don't want to deal with Visions. I applaud Harmonix for opening the floodgates for "extreme" metal(I'm still crossing my fingers for Immortal) but my goodness, it's not even fun, nor does it sound good.

I do think RockBandFan is talking about overall awareness, and I do have to agree more people on the street would recognize the name Metallica over Stevie Ray Vaughan. This is not a good thing.
However, if you played a song by each, they would probably recognize Stevie Ray.

-Metallica usually have longer songs. While this seems trivial, one of the characteristic elements of Thrash metal is the length. Thrash would often extend the length of their songs, to fit in multiple time signatures, and to help escape mainstream cliche's.
I've never heard of this. As far as I know, Megadeth, Anthrax, and especially Slayer have very short songs, all the time.
- Metallica generally have much more distorted instruments, another huge characteristic of Thrash metal.
I guess that counts...
- Metallica usually contains harsher, deeper vocals, as compared to the much higher pitched vocal style of the early Dave Mustaine.
That counts too?
- Metallica usually have better written lyrics.
That's debatable. Very debatable.
- Metallica arguably recorded one of the first Thrash records, although much of it was thanks to Dave Mustaine.
I'll give them that.
- Metallica seems to change tempo's more frequently, although that is definitely up for debate.
This is true, I'll agree. If you listen to Megadeth a lot, you notice that they slow down and speed up a lot in their songs, but it's usually the same tempo cut in half. One clear exception is Hanger 18, which just throws their old tempo completely out the window.
Of course, I can say many things that Megadeth do better than Metallica.
Same here :)

And as for a random music opinion: i herd mikael akerfeldt and henry rollins both liek mudkipz.
And as for the whole Metallica vs. Stevie Ray Vaughn thing goes (never thought I'd ever say that XD), they're both widely known, and while Stevie Ray Vaughn blows Metallica out of the water, Metallica is the household name that nearly every family in America knows. I'd venture to say that's the main reason.

Hell, the final nail in the coffin was when Grandmaster Flash and Madonna were inducted before bands like KISS and Rush were even nominated.

Exactly my point. Bands like Rush, KISS, Genesis, Kansas, Yes, Journey, etc. are a hell of a lot more important than Grandmaster Flash and Madonna. Considering that Madonna and Grandmaster Flash aren't even rock artists, ANY rock band is more important than either of them. And I believe that Iron Maiden is a much more important band to heavy metal than Metallica no matter how popular Metallica is.
