I apologize if others have asked this question, I tried to search the forums and interweb but didn't find anything - what are the batteries in the back of the 360 wired guitar used for? If I had some double As I'd pop them in and see for myself, but I'm out. Is it vibration feedback or something?

Bump.
Good question.

I'm guessing they are behind the plate held in with one screw? I haven't opended that yet, so again I'm guessing at the location. If there are in fact batteries there, perhaps batteries dying could be some of the cause for the guitar/strum bar issues? I hope/wonder if it would be that easy.

I just popped open the slot you guys are talking about. There are slots for three (3) Double A (AA) batteries.
My down strum stopped working yesterday (and when youc an get it to down strum, it strums 3 or 4 times). Also, my Overdrive was near impossible to activate before the strummer went out.
Let me go and try this out and I'll post my findings. Also, thank you Screamin Slavbe for making this post, as I would never had noticed the place for batteries.
EDIT: The were no batteries in it when I opened it.

I think the PS3 and 360 guitars use the same outer shell to reduce cost in production (all they have to do is change the electronics). I suppose you could put batteries in there for extra weight (or maybe something heavier) but they probably won't do anything.

There are no batteries in there. They probably just used the same production lines for both PS3 and 360 guitars, so the 360 ones have a useless battery compartment.

just put in 3 batteries but havent noticed any change in the guitar. think it just a universial body and it for the ps3 wireless fender:(

That makes the most sense that they simply used the same body for each system. On the plus side, as stated above, it's a nice and easy area to add weight into. Looks like it would be in a good enough spot on the guitar to keep balance as well.

I also noticed it has the FCC B Class notification thingie on the back, which is also confusing. It either is the same body as the PS3 version, or this guitar is hiding a few secret capabilities.
Sorry to hear about your guitar crapping out. Percentage wise it seems like a lot of people are having hardware issues. I played online with two different people today who could no longer down strum. I think this may be one of the reasons why they couldn't produce as many bundles for launch as they originally estimated, they were probably trying to deal with refining the peripherals. Knock on wood everything seems OK with my set.

I noticed a battery case also, I asked about it on another form, no answer that I've seen yet. But I did crack open one of my guitars to fix the strum problem, the battery case doesn't appear to be connected to anything internally, so it's pretty safe to say they just used the same otter shell. But nice if you wanna add weight.

There is a wireless version of the 360 guitar coming, so they probably are using the same outer shell for both. (Due to Microsoft's expensive licensing fees for their wireless technology, they weren't able to include it as part of the bundle.)

no such luck. there are no wires going to the battery compartment. there is no purpose for batteries on the 360 controller

Correct.
There is NO planned wireless functionality with this compartment.
