My son has Guitar Hero II on PS2 with the standard guitar. If I buy the game only package of rock baned will his Guitar Hero Guitar work?

According to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_controller_compatibility
It simply says UNKNOWN. I'm going to have to say it most likely does not. Considering the annoying fiasco with the PS3. You could buy him Guitar Hero 3 as a safer purchase without spending 170 dollars.
See what just happened Harmonix? I hate to say it, but you might have just lost a customer because of this.
If you have a store you can go to that you can make a deal with to TEST this out first and please post your results after, and in case it doesn't work they will allow you to take it back. (Generally the policy is, you opened it, its now yours unless you trade it in). Its really up to you if you want to take the risk unless some one here has tested it. Wish I could help you more.

PS2 guitars don't work---we had a friend bring his over and I used a PS2-USB adapter--it works on the main menu but not any further.

This has been tried with many different PS2 guitars and many different USB adapters. Rock Band just detects the guitar as a SIXAXIS controller and asks you to plug in a mic so you can play vocals. Lame.

wait - this guy seems to be asking about the ps2 version of Rock Band, not ps3. I have no idea about that myself. does anyone else? seems to me that there is a more likely chance that the sp2 old guitars will work on the ps2 RB. but who knows?

Yeah, nobody knows about the PS2 version, seeing as it won't be out until december.
