Gold Membership needed for DLC?

I know this probably is an extremely noob question, but can I download DLC without a Gold Xbox Live membership? I have never used online features of Xbox before so I'm not familiar with how it works. Also, if I have to get gold, where can I buy it cheapest and get it activated most quickly?

Never did before so I don't think you'd need to now. Just need the points. To get it activated quickest would be to buy it through XBL and you're given a gold trial anyway when you first sign up.

My friend has a silver membership and is able to download new songs just fine.
