Thought this would be a good idea. Basically tell us what movies you saw recently AND what you thought about them. Could be something you saw on TV/DVD or in the Movies. Anything~ I watch lots of movies so I will post here a lot :)
Last film I saw was Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007). Very good crime drama/thriller from Sidney Lumet (Dog Day Afternoon). Two brothers who are in need of money for different reasons decide to rob a jewelery store. There's a twist though, which I won't mention ... :D
Before that, I saw The Defiant Ones (1958), starring Sidney Poitier. I enjoy watching old movies. Really liked this one, it was a great drama about two prisoners, one black one white, who are chained together and have to help each other when they find themselves free from their captors.

Iron Man, then The Incredible Hulk. Made the Stark cameo at the end of Hulk that much more awesome.

On Halloween, I saw Ginger Snaps. I have no idea why this movie is a considered a cult classic. The satire and 'lycanthropy as puberty' analogy seemed ham-fisted, and all in all it just oozed 'laughably bad b-movie' to me.

Last flicks I saw were Role Models and Madagascar 2. Role Models isn't nearly as funny as it should be, though it has a few moments and the LARP scenes are choice.
Madagascar 2 is more of the same, with plenty of cute lemur and penguin action. Pretty much if you liked the first one you'll dig the sequel.

For Hallowe'en I watched "30 Days of Night". I really enjoyed it, I thought it was a very good horror/suspense film, well shot, well lit, great makeup, good effects, great setting, awesome setup, reasonably acted, and overall well executed.
I was suprised later to see it had a metacritic of 50ish, and a '50% fresh" rotten tomatos ranking. I don't know what people who didn't like it were looking for, or what they were expecting when they went to a 'vampires attack an Alaskian town during the period of prolonged nightfall' movie, but IMO, it delivered all that its concept promised.
I also read that in some versions the vampire language was subtitled, I can only imagine this detracting from the expieriance - more interesting to not know exactly what they are saying.

It was alright, but nowhere near as good as the comic it's based on. The artwork for that is amazing.

I watched the first 40 minutes of it the day after Halloween, thought it was passable at that point, but I paused it to take care of something, then played Fallout 3 for the rest of my rec time that day. I never got back to it, and do not feel strongly motivated to do so. Too meh to survive a viewing interruption.
From my incomplete viewing it didnt even reach laughably bad status, which would have been better than the damnation of faint praise that it was - too balanced between things that were working and things that were too obvious or shoddy.
Meh.

The cinematography in that film is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Bleak and moody as hell, but freaking incredible looking. I had to pick it up on Blu-ray. The score is also some great, minimalist, bowel-churning stuff.
Surprisingly, most of the critics in my neck of the woods 'got it' and gave it reasonably good marks. I think it made it onto my top twenty list from last year. Solid, intense work. And it had Ben Foster, who's one of the best modern cinema weirdos.
EDIT: I remember seeing some bits subtitled, particularly the conversation about God between Danny Huston and one victim. But the bulk of it as far as I recall was untranslated.

Yeah, that was a winner. Ben Stiller's actually a decent director too - it looked way better than most comedies. And man, the smartest thing Tom Cruise has done in a long while was taking a role in that film.
Other summer comedies I liked were Pineapple Express (though it's a mix of comedy and action) and the incredibly stupid yet undeniably hilarious Step Brothers (though folks who hate Will Ferrell will probably not be swayed by it).

My Spanish teacher got our class to see that because of the Spanish locations/references and such in the film. The tickets weren't free (I think the snacks were) but I didn't go. There was no way I was gonna spend $9 on it. (Though he did get us free tickets to see Quantum of Solace on the 19th, once again because parts of it take place in Spanish speaking countries :D )

Watched Donnie Darko again on Halloween. Man that movie is F'ed up. I missed the beginning this time though. I remember I needed it to make sense the first time and even that was a shaky kind of sense.
Also saw Dark Knight when it first came out. Runs a little long but very good. Got a BT of Iron Man and re-watched it the other day. Such a great movie and doesn't need the "for a comic-book movie" caveat. Only problem was the version I got has the Farsi subtitles in German. I don't speak Farsi or read German so I don't actually remember what the hell they were saying. Considering those phrases are usually followed by guns I think I get the gist...

As awesome as Donnie Darko is, it is a dense film and Richard Kelly grew so familiar with his invented mythology that he forgot to express it to the audience. He kinda sloppily rectified it with the Director's Cut, but then people complain that it's too in your face.
But yeah - it only made a sort of emotional sense to me at first. Without the supplemental materials on the DVD, there's no freakin' way I would have figured out all the subtext about "The Manipulated Living", "The Manipulated Dead" and all that sh*te.

LOVE me some Donnie Darko action. I was lucky in that the first version I watched was the Director's Cut. After watching the original version, I can totally see why a lot of people bash on it.
As embarrassed as I am to say it, I even liked Southland Tales. There is ZERO reason why I should like this movie. I genuinely hate a majority of the main actors (Dwayne Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Timberlake, Seann William Scott), but for some reason, Kelly pulled it all together in his own special f'd up way. As I was watching it, I was thinking "Ok, this is just too weird, even for me." But then when Timberlake did the Killers - "All These Things" segment, something just clicked for me and I got it. I even wore a similar blood stained shirt for halloween last year, but nobody got the reference, just thought I was bloody.

I hate the Directors cut. It is like hey here is everything with no subtext. Donnie Darko is in my top 3 favorite movies of all time. I also did all the website stuff and bought the script, so I had a lot of info. I think the beauty of the movie is that it is left open to interpretation.
Der_Lex
11-05-2008, 12:37 PM
I actually don't like the director's cut of Donnie Darko. I like the way things were left open for speculation in the original version. In comparison, the director's cut took you by the hand and pointed out the story for you, and I'm not too fond of that. I don't need 'closure' in a movie, I'm fine with a lot of it being left t my own interpretation (one of the reasons why I loved The Fountain).
culturedog
11-05-2008, 12:54 PM
For me neither cut of the great double-D is perfect. The original is a bit too subtle and fails to get across certain ideas that Kelly clearly wanted the viewer to know. And the Director's Cut just awkwardly inserted an overload of information without much grace. I do like plenty of the added scenes, though - so I'll watch either version at the drop of a hat.
And The Fountain is the shiznit!

Last night I watched Hulk. I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch it based on the last movie, which I thought sucked, but since I was pleasantly surprised by Iron Man and I love Ed Norton as an actor and I used to have a little boy crush on Liv Tyler, I thought I would give it a go. I thought this movie was awful. Tyler delivered one of the worst acting performances of all time and Norton was well short of his usual genious. The storyline was thin at best and to enjoy the action scenes you had to totally suspend your disbelief, which I was unable to do. SPOILER ALERT: The only thing I found interesting about this movie was the second to last scene when Tony Stark walks into the bar and informs General Ross that they are putting a team together, hinting that an Avengers movie is on the way. END SPOILER
Hulk is a steaming pile of garbage.

Watched the secret last week, was a pretty good movie, although the ending left me wondering about what happened to the mother when the daughter returned, before that was The Love Guru, justin timberlake is a better actor than a musician, pretty funny, better than I expected. I dug the joker rendition at the end. Also not something I've seen recently but a great movie that's under the radar Southland Tales, from the guy who did Donnie Darko, stars The Rock, Justin Timberlake and Stiffler (can't remember his real name, sean somethin.) It deals with time travel, drugs and religion, pretty crazy stuff. Also the weirdest role I have ever seen John Lovitz or Cheri Otari in.

forget reviews, this movie was awesome, lol just read through some more posts in this thread and noticed it's already been referenced, creepy. Touching on donnie darko for a second...what I liked about that movie - It took more than one watching to even grasp what went on, and to this day I still can't completely know, alot of speculation, it's sort of an aeon flux (the series of course) kind of thing where you have to draw your own conclusions to the story. Southland tales is similar in that aspect, but not nearly as deep, I figured out what was going on by around half-way through the second watching. And from other reviews I am definately checking out the fountain asap.

Rarely go to the movies, so the last thing I saw was Iron Man. It was good enough to not need the whole comic book tie gimmick. It had a good balance of the serious segments, the fights and the great sense of humor Tony has. I also realized that I'm too obsessed with figuring things out when I spent a minute or so during the first flight over L.A. trying to figure out his MPH when they briefly had his speed in Mach. 58 mph doesn't seem fast enough for him to fly, imo.

Tim Burton is really on and off for me. I really liked Batman, Batman Returns and Big Fish, but Sweeny Todd and his remakes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Planet of the Apes were terrible. Everything else sort of falls in between (yes, even Edward Scissorhands, I upset just about every chick I know).
Movies I have watched today were Hellboy 2, Tropic Thunder and Lawrence of Arabia.
I had to watch the latter to make up for the total unfunnyness of Tropic Thunder. Maybe I just couldn't get into the humor of the movie.

My girlfriend had me watch Heathers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097493/) with her and some friends for the first time tonight. A cult-classic black comedy from the late 80's starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater.
Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that it's one of those movies that you can only really describe as "one of those movies." I enjoyed it, though.

I was watching Final Fantasy 7:Advent Children on Saturday. It actually didn't turn out bad as I though it might turn. The voice acting was somewhat awkward on the Remnants, but then again that might be the point that speech is somewhat choppy. Overall the voice actors that were chosen for the main team matched up decently.(Mena Suvari did a much better job for Aeris than I thought anyone was going to do for her). I give the movie a 7/10.

On Saturday I saw a twisted faux-propagandist comedy called The Juche Idea from this crazed Buffalo NY filmmaker Jim Finn. It's based on the true story of Kim Jong-Il kidnapping filmmakers and forcing them to make pro-North Korean 'art'.
And yesterday I went to see My Name Is Bruce, a sorta spin on the old comedy classic They Call Me Bruce. It stars Bruce Campbell as... Bruce Campbell! He plays a hard-drinking, womanizing version of himself who is forced to help the small Oregon town of Gold Lick defeat an undead Chinese demon that loves bean curd.
The local kid who unleashes the beast is so in love with Evil Dead films that he believes Campbell can actually defeat evil forces in real life as well. Really fun stuff directed by Bruce himself, with a ton of cool cameos from the Evil Dead universe.
After the screening Bruce was on hand to do a roughly half-hour Q&A session. I asked him if he was ever tempted to "touch Pete's piece" during the Brisco County years.
As for Tim Burton, I really enjoyed Sweeney Todd and find I like it even more with each viewing. And Edward Scissorhands is an outright masterpiece - along with Ed Wood and Big Fish, it's his best work.

I saw Changeling over the weekend, and boy...was that ever uplifting!!
I swear at least 4 different couples left the theater throughout the movie because the girl/woman couldn't stop crying. Pretty much every person that walked out with me during the credits all said "I had NO idea it was THAT disturbing!!" While I'll admit the previews are a little misleading, I can't for the life of me figure out what those people thought the movie was going to be. Even the girl I went with had some clue, she still cried a lot, but still, she knew it was coming.
Culturedog: on a 1-10 for My Name is Bruce, what you got? That's one I was kind of giddy for when I first heard about it last year, but I know I'm going to have to wait til the DVD release.

I really liked Changeling. It was a bit more dark and intense than I expected, but like you said - I knew it wasn't going to be a fluffy, cuddly movie. Plus, anyone who's seen Mystic River knows Clint doesn't mind putting his characters through hell.
I hear alot of complaints that it has too many endings, but I thought that reflected how real life doesn't always offer easy solutions or wrap things up in a pretty bow. Solid acting, and I really felt that Clint made the time period come alive.
Back to the Bruce, as a film itself I'm sure it's only a 6 or so, but on the cult/fun scale it shoots right up to a 9. It's way more entertaining than The Man With The Screaming Brain, and it chugs along faster than Bubba Ho-Tep. And for Evil Dead fans, it's an absolute must see!

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought. Its runtime is 2:21, but it felt like 4 hours because you'd see a point where you think the movie is ending, then all of the sudden you're back in the movie and watching for another 20 minutes to see another ending...then you go BACK to the movie. Just the anticipation of the freaking credits was enough to keep me on the edge of my seat!!
It's currently #9 out of the 15 movies I've seen in 2008 (I'm picky as to what movies I see).

I really lucked out that he came to my town - I was pretty surprised to see it listed on his website a few months back, and figured it would get cancelled or something! I bet the DVD will be coming out shortly after the tour wraps up.
The Q&A was pretty fun too - Bruce said he doesn't want to do a cameo in any Evil Dead remake. Also he doesn't really want to do an Evil Dead 4 at this point, since Raimi's booked up with Spider-Man 4 and 5 - and they'll all be old as hell by the time they get to it.
He also confirmed that he's not going to be in Bubba Nosferatu either. Looks like Ron Perlman's going to be playing Elvis this time around.

You don't really "log" them in. It's mainly you go to the site, type in the name of your dvd, then click "Add to Owned". That's it. The website provides all the details about directors, boxart, etc.

That barcode scanner is nuts. I'm a bit too cheap to go out and buy something hardcore like that, but I'm definitely considering cataloging my movies.
I read up on the IMDB recently that MGM was planning on offering it's older movies (save for the popular ones of course) online, which is a very interesting change. I'm all for the move to online distribution, for me, ease of obtainment is greater than the quality difference between streaming divx and bluray.

Last night I watched that killer crocodile movie Primeval. I remember being pissed off at the ad campaign, since it kept trying to promote the movie as a thriller about a serial killer named Gustave while hiding the whole croc angle.
So last night it was on free cable and I decided to check it out. Pretty much what I expected, though it was surprisingly more capable than stuff like Anaconda and its sequel. I also wasn't expecting the whole political part of it, as half of the movie felt more like Blood Diamond than a horror flick. But man did Orlando Jones have to utter some horrible lines. Cringetastic!

Holy crap...there's a LONGER version of Once Upon a Time in America!?!?!
Unforgiven... Probably the last great Western I know of.
The 3:10 to Yuma remake was pretty freaking good for me, and I'm not a big Westerns fan. The '57 Glenn Ford original is still amazing to me, but adding in Christian Bale, Ben Foster (who is superb), and Russell Crowe, while slightly tweaking the storyline made the remake wildly entertaining.
So kind of a freaky occurance yesterday, but because G4 has been showing Fight Club so much recently, I decided to pop in the full explitive containing version last night (for the 1,294th time) and watched it before I went to bed. When I sleep, I have music playing to drown out ambient noises and when I woke up, "Where is My Mind" by the Pixies was playing. Now THAT is how I like to start off my day!!

Quantum of Solace, baby! It'll probably be the next movie I watch too.
Also love Unforgiven and think it's Eastwood's best film. 3:10 To Yuma was really solid too, though of course it kinda paints itself into a corner at the end, and you just have to go along for the ride when it gets slightly convoluted. Ben Foster was great though - love that freaky little dude!
And Fight Club, well... nuff said. It's freakin' Fight Club! :D

The Shining is one of my favorite horror movies. Still manages to creep me out sometimes. American Gangster was really good too. I haven't heard of American Wilderness though
I absolutely loved The Shining. I have no idea why I wrote American Wilderness, though. :< I meant to say Strange Wilderness, which is a comedy about how a stoner and his stoner friends take over a show about the wilderness (called Strange Wilderness) after his dad dies.

The first 12 minutes weren't thaaat bad. I thought the refrigerator was campy fun. But consider yourself lucky to have spared yourself from the last 20 minutes of the film.
The last movie I watched was Dark Knight, and... this being my fourth time seeing it, it has sort of lost it's luster. Once you know what's going to happen, the movie just sort of lays there in a slump. Whereas some movies, I can watch over and over, taking in the message of the flick.

I had honestly never seen the movie though I had read the book several times. I really liked it, the transfer was bright and very well done for the age of the film. The only complaint I have with the disc was the audio mix, the music was mixed much louder than the dialog which made a few scenes awkward. Other than that I would recommend it.

Yeah, they're not perfect, but several of them are cool. Basically, the people at TiVo select a list of movies that they think fit a theme, and you can see the list. If the list interests you, you can set the TiVo to automatically record all of the movies that are showing in your area. I picked the Halloween list during the 2nd week of October, and it's still recording scary movies for me to watch.
You can also get GuruGuides for season premieres, but it was missing many of the premieres I wanted to see, so I'm not sure what's up with that. Another nice thing with TiVo is being able to record everything that has a particular actor or director. So I can get all the Chuck Norris or Alfred Hitchcock movies I want :D

Twilight - kinda like Anne Rice meets The Lost Boys. Though I couldn't help but thinking that it was secretly a bunch of pro-abstinence propaganda.
The leads were good, but some of the effects were goofy and the vampires also looked silly at times (when Dr. Cullen appears for the first time, he's so damned white I doubt anyone wouldn't suspect he was a vampire) - especially when they're baring fangs and hissing in baseball uniforms.
Catherine Hardwicke does some interesting work, but at times it feels too much like it's a TV show and not a big-budget movie. In fact, the whole thing really feels like it belongs on the CW network. They could throw it on right before Supernatural and watch the ratings explode.
It's pretty much a bunch of young kids in heat staring intensely at one another for two hours. I'll stick with The Lost Boys and Near Dark, but certainly the teen girls at the screening last night went ape**** over it - squealing with glee everytime another pasty-faced, Morrissey-coiffed femboy strutted across the screen. And I suppose it does play better as a teen romance than as a vampire feature.
Good score by Carter Burwell also, and I was pleased to hear Radiohead over the end credits. Nice locations too, even though some of the deep woods glory shots are cheapened by cheesy camera swoops and aggressive editing.
Overall not too bad, if not full-price-in-the-theater good. And remember gals - if you're breathing heavily, sweating and aching for hot, steamy, sinful sex, just pretend your boyfriend is a vampire and that he'll lose control and drain your blood if things get too hot and heavy. But first get some mousse and give him some unruly Morrissey hair.

Thanks! Just found out that Let The Right One In is coming to my town in three weeks! Definitely have to hit that up.
Last night I saw Bolt, but unfortunately not in Disney Digital 3-D or whatever they call it. It was pretty much what I expected: a lame concept saved by some funny pigeons and the hilarious Rhino - an overexcitable hamster with a thirst for action and danger.
When I first saw the trailer for this flick, I wrote it off as a ripoff of the Buzz Lightyear character from Toy Story, only with a delusional actor dog in place of a delusional children's toy. But where the concept of Buzz worked great naturally, Bolt's situation seemed cheesy and forced, especially to anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of film and television production.
Bolt's belief in his superhero television persona could have been easily established with the dog-tired old cliche of a bump on the noggin' causing him to confuse his alter ego with his real identity. Hey, it worked on Miami Vice, so why not in a kids' movie?
But instead, the film pulls a Truman Show homage and makes it so that the television show within the film stages every episode of Bolt 'for real' in one long take - so that the dog believes the entire scenario and the audience will be thrilled by his 'realistic' performance. So, all of the cars and vehicles suddenly become paper thin when Bolt grips them in his teeth (even when there are people inside of them ), as there are no greenscreened CGI effects.
There's no effort given to explain how any of the other amazing things seen during the opening of the film could possibly be accomplished 'live'. It's a well known truth that working in cinema with children and animals is a nightmare, but somehow this finely tuned operation knows ahead of time every single action Bolt will take and prepares stunt teams etc. to act in accordance.
It's ridiculously stupid, and doesn't gel well with the rest of the film, which is relatively well written and sports some generic yet touching character developments. The opening also features some boring Hollywood 'types' such as a slimy agent, a penny-pinching network exec and a megalomaniacal director.
Thankfully, once all this crap is swept to the side and the 'road movie' portion of the film begins, it hits its stride and keeps on hitting the right notes. There's nothing wildly original to it, but the characters and outrageous scenarios they encounter are enough of a hoot to entertain both the kids and the older folk. And I'm sure the 3-D effects will add an extra jolt of juice to the whole thing.
The design team should also get some nods for mixing it up visually, since the CGI animation is sometimes balanced with some old-school painterly backgrounds and a heavily stylized hand-drawn look during some of the montages.
So it's no Pixar, and the core concept is epic fail - but the fun characters and the overall sense of adventure pulls it all together in spite of these limitations. But it's still a Toy Story/Truman Show ripoff. And again I feel like a total dumbass for tearing apart a kids' movie! :D But if Pixar hadn't raised the bar so damned high, I wouldn't have to.

I don't think he meant that you couldn't have an opinion. Just that if you have a negative opinion of someone or something, you could voice it more politely and constructively or just keep it to yourself.
To anybody who has seen it, is Wall-E worth buying on Blu-ray? It looks cool, but I haven't seen it yet.
Excuse me while I 'chim' in with more outrageous commentary! :D
Wall-E blew me away. Like my friend Ehfahq, I was initially turned off by the character's resemblance to Johnny 5, but I got so swept up in the story that I completely forgot about that after a few minutes.
It's one of Pixar's best films (and I'm pretty well convinced it's their best period), and is one of the best movies of this year.
I'm definitely going to pick up the Blu-ray. High-Def Digest gave it really high marks, and I can only imagine how great some of the space scenes will look in HD!

Thanks guys! I'll look into it, or maybe put it on my Christmas list. I get together with my cousins every year and we draw names for our annual Christmas party. We've done it since I was 1, and it's something I really look forward to. Luckily, this falls right into our price range :D
Also, I would find it hard to believe Wall-E beats out Iron Man for best movie of the year, but I'm a comic book movie junkie, lol

Wow..thanks for reminding me! I know for a fact that I have a steelbook version of both Death Proof and Planet Terror, but I don't think they were 3-discs. There were a few DVD's that I bought when DVDAF was "re-designing" back when it was still "www.dvdaficionado.com", not dvdaf.com, and I they didn't do a good job of getting all the versions of movies that came out during that time...I should really go back through these and double check!

Yes, if you own one and only one BD, I think it should be Wall-E. I, too, had no interest in this movie when it originally came out because all I saw in the trailers was a depressing Earth, one robot and that robot going into space. After seeing the trailers on PSN, the film seemed a lot more appealing, and I pre-ordered it from Amazon and watched it yesterday.
Best movie I've ever seen.

Iron Man is really good, too... as far as Blu-ray performance, Wall-E looks and sounds better (but it's animated so it probably has a huge advantage over live film). Get Both! Those would be the first two BD's I would get if I were starting my collection over today.

Ah... were you disappointed by 'everything else' that appeared in the movie then?
I'm not that savvy on tech specs other than knowing 1080p is BD HD quality... The BD (and DVD) of Wall-E comes with a 'digital copy' that's in 480p Standard Def that you could watch on your computer.

Same here - I've got all my stubs going back to '94, though I keep them loose in a huge rice bowl with a pair of chopsticks shoved in. I've been meaning to make digital scans of them all, since they have a tendency to fade quickly.
Back to the 'last seen' movies, I saw Transporter 3 last night and thought it was much better than the last. Way more in the spirit of the original, with slightly more down to earth action.
Basically Frank Martin's still trying to remain retired, fishing with his old buddy Inspector Tarconi as often as possible. Unfortunately, his reputation is still running strong, and a paid strongman for a bunch of polluting Americans wishes to hire him for a job. This plot ties in with an EPA bigwig in the Ukraine (Jeroen Krabbe of The Living Daylights!) and his fun-loving daughter who gets kidnapped while partying in Ibiza.
One cool gimmick about this film is that Frank has a "Battle Royale" style 'sploding body accessory, in this case a bracelet that goes kablooey if he moves too far away from his beloved black Audi. Which keeps the action car-centric, thankfully.
The only thing that bothered me was that alot of the aerial shots of the car chases were sped up, so they looked cartoonish instead of thrilling. Lots of flashy editing too, which sometimes obscures Cory Yuen's intricately choreographed fight scenes. For those who didn't like the busy nature of Quantum of Solace, you'll hate this. Even static shots of ships in a harbor are constantly spliced, fast-forwarded and tweaked with, as if the editor was bored and needed something to do.
It looks better than the last film, probably thanks to new director Olivier Megaton (only Luc Besson can dig up guys with names like this!). Mr. Megaton and his DP Giovanni Fiore Coltellacci make great usage of locations such as Marseilles, Budapest and the beautiful vistas near Stuttgart.
The plot is relatively thin, the characters are cardboard cutouts with dense accents (even the Americans sound fake, kinda like when English characters would show up in Hong Kong movies) and the editing is just way too nutty. But, hey - it's Frank Martin kicking ass, grabbing ass and driving fast. What more do you want?

How do you see all these early screenings? I can't wait for Transporter 3~
Last night I saw the last hour of Die Hard. I've seen it before of course but I just realized ... isn't the ending kind of silly?
Highlight for spoiler~
When that guy who was left hanging for like an hour suddenly appears with his gun. He should have been dead, and then he somehow got passed all the cops and was able to end up almost right in front of McClain. It's like all they wanted was for that cop to shoot someone before the movie ended
I watched The Pick of Destiny and it was kinda funny. Before that I saw Hancock and I was extremely disappointed in it even though everyone else I know thought it was awesome.

Zack and Miri was a great first half of a movie! I really liked Craig Robinson and Jason Mewes, they totally stole the show.
I'm watching The Rock (1996), where I will fall asleep to a time where Nicolas Cage made half decent action movies, and Computer Generated SFX were so far in their infancy that directors actually used (*gasp*) real explosions and stuntmen.

Lots of unsavory sexual favors! Not really - I'm a film critic when I'm not rocking plastic instruments. And I'm lucky enough to live in a market where they do a ton of screenings. Though there's nothing at all this week because of the holiday. Stupid holidays, gettin' in the way of my movies!
Anyhow, Friday night I went out and paid for a second viewing of Quantum of Solace. I have to say I enjoyed it even more the second time, and was less focused on comparing it to Casino Royale. I'm still having a hard time seeing it as a Bourne ripoff, for while there is a car chase, a foot race across rooftops and some fast editing, the similarities end there.
Also watched Man's Best Friend, the silly 1993 Ally Sheedy film about Max, a vicious canine genetically enhanced with cheetah and boa constrictor attributes. He's as fast as a cheetah! He can camouflage himself and meld into a pile of rakes! He has acid piss that will burn your face! It's craptastic, but at least Lance Henriksen stops by for some fun as Max's creator. Think Cujo mixed with a heaping helping of Velveeta!

Well it's fair to note that the Bourne Identity revolutionized the action genre, and Casino Royale could never have existed in it's current form without the Bourne Identity paving the way first.
And the way I see it, Quantam is better looked at as the second half of Casino Royale, if you look at it as it's own movie then you'll think it's a lot worse then it is. When it's out on DVD I'll make a note to watch them back to back.

On the flipside, without the vintage Bond films would the Bourne series be the same? Take the fight between Bond and Slate in Haiti - many people are going to see that as a rip-off of the Bourne/Desh fight from The Bourne Ultimatum. I see it as a descendant of the fight between Bond and the thug in Tracy's hotel room in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
I just feel that the media is really latching on to this whole Bourne thing out of sheer laziness. I think the biggest modern influence on the Bond reboot was Batman Begins, mainly in terms of proving that a serious take on an old franchise could pay off at the box office.
Sure, Dan Bradley was hired by EON because of his work on the Bourne series, but I doubt Marc Forster was using those films for inspiration. Hitchcock, on the other hand, was a big influence - which is very fitting given the fact that North By Northwest set the template for the early Connery films.
In any case, Quantum is a very good Bond film. It's not as great as Casino Royale, but it seems to be getting trashed unfairly because of that. Crazy editing or no, it's way better than any of the Brosnan films.

Had a very high, and a VERY very low yesterday. First I watched The Alamo via AMC. I didn't think my opinion of Dennis Quaid could get any lower than it already was. I've said it once, and I'll say it again: Dennis Quaid = one of the worst actors in Hollywood. Terrible direction, terrible acting, terrible cinematography...there really wasn't a single moment where I thought to myself, "Oh this might be turning around", at least until the credits started rolling. I don't know if they were trying to make a Braveheart of the Texan Frontier with all of the grandeurous speeches, but they were all terribly written. Man...didn't realize how much I hated this movie til I started typing.
Ok, to calm down and boost my spirits again, I made up for that by watching A Fish Called Wanda last night. I had seen this when I was younger, maybe 10 or 12 and didn't really appreciate it. After a re-viewing, I comfortably moved it to #5 on my list of Top 25 movies from 1988. Kevin Kline and John Cleese were comedically brilliant, great score, and even though I really don't like Jamie Lee Curtis, she was captivating.
While I understand your possible desire to disagree with my opinions....don't call me stupid!

I agree it works both ways, I'm just saying that when it comes to pure screenplay, Bourne was a pioneer in the kind of "realistic action with shaky cam". I'm not saying Bond copies off that series, I'm just saying they were inspired by it. But overall they're drastically different in their setups. The Bourne series focus is Bourne being chased, and the Bond is the one who does the chasing, there's a beginning middle and end in the Bond films. The Bourne films are driven by the action(I mean the entire concept of Bourne running means that they can include a chase or fight scene whenever they want), Bond films are driven by story.
And while I agree that the general quality of the Brosnan films was poor, I'll still defend Goldeneye to the grave. Though Tomorrow Never Dies, and The World is Not Enough were both equally terrible. And it's worth noting that Die Another Day is one of my most hated films ever, it's the only movie that I've ever fallen asleep to.
It's just one of those cases where Casino Royale blew a lot of people away, and it's rare that sequels are often considered as good as the original if not better. The only two movies I can think of that have accomplished that are Dark Knight and Godfather part II(possibly Spiderman 2 as well).
Casino Royale is still my favorite Bond film, and I enjoyed Quantum of Solace a lot, I made the mistake of not watching Casino Royale again before seeing it, so I was confused a lot by it's story, but I rewatched Casino Royale a few nights ago and finally understood most of what happened. I think that overall Quantum of Solace was a necessary step in what seems to a series where they're going to have a continuing story. I expect good things from the third film.

I feel your pain! That's so funny - yesterday I was flipping through the channels and landed on AMC for a minute. "Ooh, what's this?" I thought as I saw what looked like the preparation for some sort of battle. Then all of a sudden I realized one of the soldiers was Billy Bob Thornton. "Oh, Crap! IT'S THE ALAMO!!" I cried as I furiously tried changing the channel before it could burn out my retinas. Why I watched Man's Best Friend instead is beyond my comprehension...
But overall they're drastically different in their setups. The Bourne series focus is Bourne being chased, and the Bond is the one who does the chasing, there's a beginning middle and end in the Bond films. See that's more like it! Recognizing the importance of the Bourne series is one thing, but unlike the bulk of the reviewers out there you noticed that Bond and Bourne are wildly different in terms of theme and character.
I can understand people being disappointed that QoS pales next to Casino Royale, but instead of explaining that, they seem to be latching onto this mindset of "Shaking Camera = Bourne. Period." And nobody will be caught dead pointing out the similarities to older Bond films like The Spy Who Loved Me or even License To Kill.
I agree that the next film is going to benefit from having the ground floor established by CR and QoS. That's where they're really going to be able to have fun, loosen up and expand upon the series.

Rewatched Stir Of Echoes last night - hadn't seen it in ages. It still held up well, even though it's basically a darker version of The Ghost Whisperer. Kevin Bacon is great, and director David Koepp knows how to play it for scares (and laughs) and how to set up frames that make the audience squirm with anticipation. It kinda got lost in the post-Sixth Sense shuffle, but it's a solid ghost flick.
