Non-Singing Vocal Parts: What's The Trick?

So most of the time, I don't have many problems with the non-singing vocal parts of songs. But occasionally, it doesn't work for me. And it is a real problem with Sabotage. I constantly score very low on that song. So what's the trick? What is the game actually checking for when you do those parts of the song?

From what I understand the game is checking for vowel/consonant (phomeme) during those parts, unlike during the pitch-scored parts. Also I would imagine that start/stop of sound discipline is scored but I am only guessing on that.

Awesome, it's what I feared... the game is penalizing me for having a southern accent :(

I think there's a hint more latency in the mic compared to the other instruments - I have the calibration perfect for the guitar and drums, but with the mic on the spoken parts, it always grades really off - even on Easy. I've 5-starred every song on Easy except for Epic and Sabotage, and on those I can't get over a 3.5 unless I adjust the calibration to about -50 (where I can get about a 4.5) - however, that only works solo, as it makes the other instruments unplayable.

I do fine on Sabotage. The key is that you need to start a sound, just about any sound, when the word highlights and you have to end it when the word ends. So if you see

Sa-- bo- tage------

You have to HOLD the "tage" for the entire length of the line. Taaaaaage! That'll net you the max points for it.

Sabotage can be tricky because the phrases are very short... if you come in too late or leave too early it docks points and you lose your Awesome rating. You can't "make it up" with a later part of the phrase because the phrase is so short compared to things like Jukebox Hero.
