Band Roles

When you create a band your character is using a set instrument. For example my first created character was the singer and my brother was the guitarist. Is there a way to switch roles for different songs or do you actually have to create a new character under your profile for each different instrument, as opposed to just handing over the controller and using the other players profile

You have to create new characters. What irks me is that, when you are playing solo, it generates random band mates instead of giving you the option of using the ones you already created for the other roles.
