This day 35 years ago Jack Bruce called out Led Zeppelin feud with this comment:

Jack Bruce of Cream recently unleashed some harsh words about Led Zeppelin, airing some grievances to the press at a recent award ceremony by saying “**** off, Zeppelin, you’re crap.” (http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=108298) “Everybody talks about Led Zeppelin,” Bruce said in the unprovoked attack. “**** off, Zeppelin, you’re crap. You’ve always been crap and you’ll never be anything else. Cream is 10 times the band that Led Zeppelin is.” Bruce later tried to back away from the comments, saying “I was just having some fun with the press gallery, really” but then added a post script to the apology by lambasting Zeppelin some more. “The thing about Zeppelin is that obviously it’s a little bit of jealousy on my part — or more than a little bit — because the audience was created by Cream and Jimi Hendrix…this sort of very large audience…Then Zeppelin comes along and they get a very easy ride in that way. We are the pioneers and pioneers don’t always get the recognition they deserve, maybe.” His comment on a battle of the current guitar gods, “Let’s face it: Jimmy Page ain’t no Eric Clapton, no matter what anybody thinks,” Bruce said.No wait that was this year with this comment:

Jack Bruce of Cream recently unleashed some harsh words about Led Zeppelin, airing some grievances to the press at a recent award ceremony by saying “**** off, Zeppelin, you’re crap.” (http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=108298) “Everybody talks about Led Zeppelin, and they played one ****ing gig — one ****ing lame gig — while Cream did weeks of gigs,” Bruce said in the unprovoked attack. “**** off, Zeppelin, you’re crap. You’ve always been crap and you’ll never be anything else. Cream is 10 times the band that Led Zeppelin is.” Bruce was apparently angry that Zeppelin and not Cream (as had been scheduled), became the headliner of the Ahmet Ertegun tribute concert at the O2 Arena in London in December 2007. Bruce later tried to back away from the comments, saying “I was just having some fun with the press gallery, really” but then added a post script to the apology by lambasting Zeppelin some more. “The thing about Zeppelin is that obviously it’s a little bit of jealousy on my part — or more than a little bit — because the audience was created by Cream and Jimi Hendrix…this sort of very large audience…Then Zeppelin came along and had a very easy ride in that way. We were the pioneers and pioneers don’t always get the recognition they deserve, maybe.” As for Led Zeppelin’s decision to tour with a replacement for Robert Plant (http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2008/10/27/john-paul-jones-hints-at-led-zeppelin-tour-without-robert-plant/), Bruce added “Well, I always thought Robert Plant used the wrong kind of fertilizer, anyway, so I think he might be an improvement…I’m just joking.” As for the battle of the guitar gods, “Let’s face it: Jimmy Page ain’t no Eric Clapton, no matter what anybody thinks,” Bruce said.Wow it's a bit too late for that.

Yeah it sucks for the innovators that never get the attention they deserve.

Jack definitely can be an ass.

OTOH -- of all those rock greats from that era there was only one the jazz greats wanted to play with -- Jack

Can't say I disagree with him, really. Not that Zeppelin didn't make some good records, and not that they didn't eventually find their own sound, but their first few records were very much based on things Cream had done before (and much better).
And yeah, Clapton destroys Page in terms of feel, technique, and pure passion. Not even close.

jimmy paige is better than eric clapton. what an idiot

I personally prefer Clapton by quite a bit.

And it's Jimmy Page

On an unrelated note, I actually saw Jack Bruce live earlier this year. Front row, I could have spit on him if I wanted.

How was it? What was the lineup?

I'm a really big Jack fan, if that wasn't already clear. Got pretty much every recording he's ever released. Some of his later stuff is really, really good and really underrated. He has an album out called More Jack Than Gold that AllMusic gave 4 and 1/2 stars. They said:

More Jack Than God is easily the finest studio recording the fabled bassist and singer/songwriter Jack Bruce has made since the 1970s. His outings with Kip Hanrahan and the Golden Palominos have afforded him the luxury of working with many of his collaborators this time out: Robert Ameen, Bernie Worrell, Horacio "El Negro" Hernández, Richie Flores, and most notably new guitarist Vernon Reid. Bruce's son Malcolm is also in the mix. Bruce's songwriting here is top notch.

Bruce and Reid are a great pairing. Check out this version of Sunshine of Your Love

It was a "hippie fest". Jack Bruce, The Turtles, The Animals, The Shadows, and two others I can't remember were all there. I actually got an autograph from Eric Burdon of the Animals.

I have to say, Jack seemed drunk/high off his ass while he was playing... though he was great.

Jack is just a sad jealous old man, why attack a group like Led Zeppelin for no reason, I mean someone like Jeff Beck never gets mentioned as a pioneer of feedback etc by the media yet he doesnt come out with all this jealous rubbish, he admitts that Hendrix, Page, Clapton are better than him. Also Claptons overated, he's great at playing blues but has nowhere has the diversity of Page or Hendrix.

I personally prefer Zeppelin overall by a fairly wide margin.

But, you know, his statements really aren't wrong XD

That's a really nice performance, the improvised bass parts fit well with the solos.(Unless those bass bits were from the actual studio version, I haven't listen to it awhile. I'm taking a listen to Disraeli Gears because that video inspired me to listen to Cream at the moment :D).Question OldFogey, was Jack Bruce using a fretless bass, sounded nice.

He does play fretless - and that looks like a fretless. He was a cello student at the Scottish Conservatory before quitting to join a jazz/blues band.

The end is something he and Vernon worked out I think -- it's not part of the original which is just a vamp over an A chord.

Did you just compare Hendrix and Page?

Anyway, I could say the same thing about Page. He IS good. But he's overrated. It's all a matter of tastes.

Jack Bruce's nurse forgot to wipe him. Back to Shady Pines, buddy!
