View Full Version : Metal's branched off into new frontiers... Why can't Rock Band?

Okay- so before I get started on this, I need to let all of you know that are about to read this that I'm most likely going to offend somebody- but you also need to know that everything said here is strictly opinion on my part, and therefore, impossible for me to be wrong. :D

Enjoy... unless you're easily offended or like to argure about pointless things like a d-bag... In which case you should go away.

Oh- and HMX: please don't boot me from the forums. I write this strictly for entertainment purposes. Also- if there's a blog section I'm not aware of, let me know and I'll gladly post there instead. :)

=====

Metal. OKay- I'm not going to lie. I can't stand it, really; or at least I should say I can't stand most (if not all) of the older metal. I try and I try- really I do. I've dated the metal head, gone to see her favorite bands, downloaded music, hung out with others who swear by the stuff, and even played some of the songs over and over in Rock Band (granted- mostly because I play expert, and the songs are effing disgusting)- just trying to get a feel for why it's so popular.

I still don't get it.

Now, this isn't to say that I don't listen to any metal whatsoever- because I do... or at least my iTunes says it's metal (but let's be honest- it also tells me the Mother Hips are country); but when it comes to a game format, unless you're a metal singer, what [honestly] is the allure of spending 5 minutes grunting into a microphone? Or aimlessly sliding your fingers across five buttons hoping to hit at least 1/16 of the notes in that 20 minute solo moving 600 mph? Don't even get me started on the drumming. Yes- the game is supposed to be a challenge, and kudos to HMX, EA and MTV Games for making it such. But isn't the point of these games to get turned onto new things and have fun doing it? Sorry, HMX- but when I get to those tier 9 songs, I'm not having fun anymore.

Variety. New. Different. Yes- these games are a musical history lesson- but I think it's about time to get out of the medeival metal and move onto something current. I have to say- HMX started to get there in RB2, but it seems that (at least to me) towards the end they just gave up and said: "Screw it. Let's just drop these guys in there and be done with it."

Judas Priest and Megadeth? Guys- seriousy? You just gave us full albums by both of those bands. Wtfd (that's "what the flippin' deuce" to all you normal readers out there) are they doing in the new installment? More than that, the Megadeth song is a repeat from the album you relased to begin with! Was it really necessary to drop them into RB2? With the large amount of musical knowledge in the HMX team, I'm 100% sure it isn't because you couldn't find anything else. Yeah- I kinda get it: not everyone gets DLC. But you know- that's their problem, not yours, and certainly not mine. I'd delve into more on the DLC thing, but that's a completely different rant.

Iron Maiden... okay- not much to say on them. You stayed away, and that's good. They won't release master tracks and you wanted RB2 to be cover free. Awesome choice. Their lyrics are lame anyway. :D

Metallica. I don't get it. Really. Now, I'll be honest: I've hated Metallica for most of my life. If I could pick one band to wipe of the face of musical history, it'd be them. I hate them so much that I almost broke my RB1 disc in half when I unlocked "Enter Sandman." I stopped playing online for a good three months when I couldn't join a group for over a week without that song being the first thing they'd go to. I throw bar nuts (and sometimes empty beer bottles) at all the white trash losers who belt it out during karaoke nights because it's somehow become their white trash anthem or something (don't worry- the ladies aren't safe: I do the same thing to them when they sing Buckcherry's "Crazy *****"). But I'm getting off topic. My hatred for Metallica aside, what's the allure? We were given "Enter Sandman" plus 3 other tracks as DLC for RB1. Why revisit? Ever since they got off their pretentious thrones and started releasing master tracks of their songs, these games have been scooping them up like they're musical uber-genius'.

Which brings me back to my point: variety. I find it hard to believe that without dropping the same bands into these games over and over that they're not going to make any money. No one's going to say: "Oh em gee! There's no Megadeth in this game? Well, I'm certainly not buying it!" You (HMX) have done so well at diversifying every other rock genre out there, why should metal be any different? I'll give you this- I was ecstatic to see Mastodon. Never heard of Dream Theatre, but... wow. Downloaded that song within minutes of playing it for the first time. You're getting there, but you could search other avenues. There are PLENTY of awesome metal bands out there that would do just as well being put in the games:

The Fall of Troy
Botch
Isis
Cradle of Filth (they're starting to grow on me)
Mindless Self-Indulgence
From Autumn to Ashes
mewithoutYou
Clutch
Thrice
Hank Williams III

...and that's just naming a few. By making the DLC and RB1 songs available to play in RB2, you've all ready allowed people to play those bands and keep the music going. Metal is an essential part of rock music, and I would never state that it should not be put into the games, but come on. When making Rock Band 3 (or even just deciding on the next slew of DLC to throw our way), I really hope you guys put your thinking caps into overdrive and give us something fresh.

I know you can do it.

I have faith!

I know what you mean, we need more than metal, and I love all of the other genres (besides new "IN" music...I hate you justin timberlake) and I find metal great too, but I would rather have more prog (but i LOVEE prog metal, especially rush and dream theater, i go nuts for dream theater) anything is fine, but we have our hands full of metal right now, and dont need more for a while.

It's not at the top of the list of my favorite genres, but I recognize that metal has its place in music and these games. I'm not against it- just mostly the old stuff (as I stated early on). But this doesn't have to do as much with my feelings on metal as a whole- simply the lack of diversity in this specific genre.

The game has to satisfy hardcore players too, those that want more technical songs with higher difficulty levels. Metal is perfect for that.

As for something new, a full Foo Fighters album is being released next week. Chill.

Not what I was saying at all. I was asking for different metal bands as opposed to recycling the same ones.

I'm not going to argue like a d-bag (as you put it), but I'm still trying to get the point of your post. You don't like older metal, but complain about Enter Sandman, which is "newer" Metallica as far as I'm concerned. Anything by Metallica before the Black Album is pretty much just plain awesome. And if you haven't noticed, most of the metal they have been putting in is "new" metal; i.e. from the 2000's. They haven't really been putting in any of the old school metal except for Peace Sells, and sort of the song Painkiller.

My opinion of music is pretty much a 180 of yours; I want more 80's thrash, more of the early 90's stuff, and less of the 2000's. I also want less pop-rock crap that is so commercialized it has no real emotion to it. I'm also not a difficulty-whore that just wants to play the most finger-bending, foot-breaking guitar and drum songs. I have to drop to hard to beat many of the really tough metal songs, but I enjoy playing them much more than stuff like Devo, The Cars, Paramore, etc.

Complaining about Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, etc. is fine, but you make it sound like there's 50 songs in the game by them and only 2 pop songs or something. I'll be happy when we finally get some Slayer, Anthrax, Pantera, Overkill, Sepultura, and more Testament. "Older" metal, as you would classify it I suppose.

I still don't really know what you're asking for in your post except that you're ranting about not liking Metallica and thinking anyone who does is a white-trash redneck.

Guess I missread then. Sorry.

I'd love to see some power metal like Kamelot but definitely more prog like Mastodon, Opeth, DT, or BTBAM.

Admittedly, my rant on specific bands has thrown focus off the point of the post, which is my own fault. Ooops?

Anyway, I'm no expert on metal bands or when they came about. I'm sure a lot of you out there have plenty more suggestions as to how to diversify the genre in the games, which is fantastic. Push for 'em. Please! I'm not the oldest house on the block, and because of my personal musical tastes, my repertoire of metal knowledge is limited at best- hence describing the bands I did as "old." Thank you for teaching me something.

Well if you have never heard of Opeth... listen to Ghost Reveries. That album has been stuck in my truck's cd player forever. Normally that would piss me off, and it does get old (after many many repeated listenings), but at least its a great album.
