Similar to the last.fm tomfoolery thread. (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86332) and spawned from a hijacking of the What were the last movies you watched? (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97028) thread, I've decided to create a thread for all the users of the site DVD Aficionado (http://www.dvdaf.com/) ("DVDAF", for short).

Simply post your URL to that site, so we can all be friends! Use this thread to discuss everything home media-related! From Laserdisc to Blu-ray, new releases to OOP rarities - share your love for movies, TV shows, etc. in the physical format.

Here's mine:

Speaking of laserdisc - I wonder if there's a tracker like this out there for those as well? I've still got hundreds of those shiny big buggers, and would love to catalog them properly.

Pretty simple really. Type in the name of your movie (or box set) at the top, it will bring up any matches, find your specific DVD or set, click the check box and say "Move to Owned". That's it!

Edit: Self-reliance really is always best!

DVDAF has gotten way cooler in the last few weeks!

The biggest improvement is that you can now search by format (DVD, Blu-ray, HD DVD, Other)!

Also, in search results, if you mouse over the little DVD image, it automatically pops up with a bigger image! (Note: you can disable this feature.)

You can also search new releases (DVD or Blu-ray) by country.

Read more here (http://www.dvdaf.com/)!

Yeah, it seems every time I go there, they pop up with info on a new feature. Hey, it only took them 2 years from the dvdaficionado.com to dvdaf.com switch to work out all the bugs, but it's coming along!!

Biggest additions for me in past weeks include Vampyr: Criterion Collection, the entire Arrested Development series, and When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions on Blu-Ray.....and about 15 single movies. :D

Hey, nice! I've added too much recently to remember it all, but I'll try:

Blu:

The first four Criterion Blu-rays: 'Chungking Express,' 'Bottle Rocket,' 'The Man Who Fell to Earth' and 'The Third Man'
'Batman Begins' Limited Edition Gift Set (Amazon had it for $20)
'I Am Legend' - Ultimate Collector's Edition (Best Buy accidentally included it in a '2 for $35' sale for a couple hours on their website!)
'TMNT' (the second of the '2 for $35' mentioned above)

DVD:

'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' (Amazon.com Exclusive)
'The Hudsucker Proxy'
'The Big Lebowski' - 10th Anniversary Limited Edition (yeah, the bowling ball. I already own this movie, but I really freaking wanted that bowling ball! (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AEF6CW))
'The Monster Squad' - Two-Disc 20th Anniversary Edition (Amazon, $5)
All three seasons of 'How I Met Your Mother'
Seasons Two and Three of 'The Unit'
Season Four of 'House, M.D.'
Season Four of 'The Office'

... and that's just in the last month. Off the top of my head. I got a new job, hence the excessive spending. :D

By the way, did you bite on Amazon's Gold Box for the entire Arrested Development series? $30, man? I bought THREE! (Naturally, they were all gifts, as I already own it.)

Good question. It's under the My Folders (http://www.dvdaf.com/utils/folders.html) link, located at the top of your page.

From there, your options are pretty vast. You can just make simple folders for, say, 'DVD' and 'Hi-Def.'

Or, you can get very specific like I did, and create subfolder after subfolder. I like to have my DVDAF laid out the same way my shelves are.

Note: the site is pretty idiot-proof, so you can't delete an entire folder unless it's empty. If you try to delete it, it pops up a message telling you:

You are attempting to delete the folder currently named 'tv-series'.
This will only succeed if you have previously emptied that folder.

Continue?

OK=Yes - Cancel=No

So, yeah. Play around with it and see what you can come up with. If you need any more assistance or tips, let me know.

It was announced a looooong time ago, so I knew about the bowling ball case. I know this for a fact because I was living in California at the time when I first saw it (I worked with the biggest Lebowski fan I've ever met and he's the one who showed it to me), and I lived in California from 01/06-10/06. I was looking for the Achiever's Edition Set (http://www.dvdaf.com/search.html?has=big+lebowski&init_form=str0_0_has_big+lebowski&pm=one&pg=17) at the time and he told me to wait for the Bowling Ball set that was coming out. We didn't know it was going to be a 10-year anniversery set though, so I spent a long time searching for something that didn't exist. ;)

That's just what I own on dvd ;)

And I plan on keeping my collection up to date. I also use a pretty cool program called dvdpro that gives a lot of information on the dvds such as full cast, what extras are on the dvd, easter eggs if any, and if you select an actor it will also list all movies in your collection that actor is in.

That is very cool. DVDAF does some of those things, kind of. Every release has links to Amazon and IMDb. Granted, that's not really showing you the full cast and special features, but it is just one click away without having to search.

Also, DVDAF focuses on directors, not actors. So you can do that same thing you described, but with directors. For instance, here are all of my Martin Scorsese-directed discs (http://www.dvdaf.com/search.html?dir=Martin+Scorsese&where=pmpboarder&init_form=str0_0_dir_Martin+Scorsese*where_0_pmpbo arder). Just find a movie, click on the director's name and select "My Collection."

(I admit, it would be nice to have that same function with the actors, too.)

dvdpro seperates it with Cast and Crew tabs so you can do the same thing with the director etc too. Worth looking into as it's free (have to pay a bit if you want high quality cover scans). Only drawback, which is what makes dvdaf nice is that you can't look at friends collections online etc.

You know what? Thanks!!! Clicking on your link and seeing the Departed steelbook and not seeing "Owned" under it reminded me that when I bought my steelbook, it wasn't on DVDAF yet, so I had the crappy regular dvd listed. This reminded me to add what I really own!

Man, that is literally my worst fear. I had my cd collection stolen out of my car twice and it killed me (and that was only like 60 cds). I've seriously considered buying renter's insurance for that very reason since the MSRP value of my DVD collection is over $10,000. That absolutely sucks hard. :(

Yeah while we were moving I had to keep my collection in TN. When we went back to get our stuff they were all gone. It was about $6,000. Still trying to figure out what I can do about it. I would literally have cried as soon as I opened the door and saw they weren't there. When I moved from Cali to Indiana, then Indiana to Alabama, each time I had my DVD's with me in my car, and they were always the first things packed.

As of right now only about 10-15 films. I found out about all of this only 3 weeks ago. Now, much to the chagrin of the DMCA, I am making back up copies of my movies and archiving the actual physical media. It is going to be a long time before I get back to where I was. It was over 10 years of collecting that was taken.

Yes, it is a great, long-overdue addition to the site! (But it's hard to complain when it's free.)

(Also just bought The Extras Complete Series....Hooray Goldbox!)

I was so going to buy that, even though I already own the series (see below), but then I went to Woot.com and got this (http://www.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=2931802) and then to Newegg.com and got this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208293) to complement it. After buying those two things, I kind of figured it would be too much to get Extras, too. Read on for the 'why'...

I already own the complete series separately (I bought them as they were released), but I realy want that outer box. Yes, I consider $15 for that box and an extra set of Extras to be worth it. (But this is a thread where I can say that and not get made fun of!)

I knew HBO week would kill me.

Today's Amazon Gold Box:

The Wire - The Complete Series - $81.99 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/ref=cs_top_nav_gb27)

I almost bought it around Christmas time when Best Buy had their 50% off HBO sale (it was $90), but let it pass. Not this time!

Also, I'm not holding off for the Blu-ray version, as this show - according to the director - was shot in SD, 4:3 aspect ratio to resemble TV shows of old. DVD will suffice for me. Especially at $80.

I knew it was coming today or tomorrow...I told myself if it got below $70 I would buy it. But I don't know if I can shell out $85 post tax for it. I know I'll regret not buying, but have to draw the line somewhere.

Yeah, anything lower would have been nice. But still, I was regretting not getting it for $90 from Best Buy around Christmas. So this is "anything lower." ;)

I wonder what the next couple days have in store...

Uh-oh... (http://www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/ref=cs_top_nav_gb27)

That's very worth it to me. But I've spent almost $250 in the last 2 days... (granted, $150 of it was a camcorder and memory card, but still).

Haha...hope you got that Amazon Visa Card and are earning points. Here in March, I'll be the same way...that's typically when all the Winter "Awards Season" movies come out on DVD.

I don't have a credit card. That's the last thing I need. I have a checking card with a $1000 line of credit. Even that's pushing it.

(By the way, I bought it. I really hope the next two Gold Box days suck. Though, it being 'HBO Week' and all, I don't see how that's possible. Crap. :()

HBO week is continuing through Sunday!? Crap, I thought it ended today. I thought I did good squeaking by with just Extras being bought. But considering the shows that I really like that are still out there (Entourage, Flight of the Conchords, OZ) I already own all available DVD's. I'm guessing 6 Feet Under and maybe John Adams....CRAP!! Forgot about that. If they put John Adams out there, I'll have to buy it.

They need to have another real good blu-ray sale. I have decided that what I can get on blu-ray to rebuild my collection I will get.

Yep, 2 more days! (read: :()

HBO Week - January 19 - January 25 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/forum/cd/discussion.html/ref=cm_cd_ef_tft_tp?ie=UTF8&cdForum=Fx20DX5GEB7TUX8&cdThread=Tx137DH77E963EE)

John Adams I've never seen. But I've heard good things.

I have seasons one and two of Six Feet Under. If they put that box set up, it'll have to be very cheap for me to consider it. Honestly, I shouldn't be considering anything right now, though.

Here's (http://www.dvdaf.com/search.html?pub=HBO&where=pmpboarder&init_form=str0_0_pub_HBO*where_0_pmpboarder) my HBO collection (some are movies).

Obviously, I need the rest of: Oz, Six Feet Under and The Sopranos, but I'm doing mighty fine with the rest: Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Extras and Da Ali G Show. Band of Brothers and Flight of the Conchords are easy, as it's just one box for each. (Have you seen the season two premiere of FotC? Holy hell! It's just as funny as anything from season one! Jemaine: "What? Why do I get double-stuffed?")

Thank you my good man.

You're absolutely welcome. When's your birthday? I wanna buy you a Blu-ray to help get you back on your feet.

One thing I've discovered from that forum is this site called Tower.com. I have yet to order from them, but most people seem to vouch for them. They have insane prices that fluctuate literally every few hours. Tropic Thunder was down to $17.99 yesterday. Now it's back up to $30-something.

The coolest thing about the site is, once you add something to your cart, it retains that price until you check out. So, say you catch a crazy good price, but are currently broke. Add it to your cart (they call it a "bag"), and keep it there for weeks. Even if the price changes on the site, it remains the same price in your bag as it was when you added it.

Here's a thread (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=78890) with plenty of discussion and highlights on current (some already outdated) deals at Tower.com. It's hard for one person to keep it updated though, as some of the prices change at any time during the day.

Bday was Nov. 16

This is all great info. Thank you. It is going to be a journey to get back to where I was but I will build it back to its former glory.

I'd be interested in seeing a list of what you still need to replace. It would also come in handy as we could help point you towards any specials or deals that come up you may not be aware of.

I did not get around to cataloging my collection yet and that was what I was going to do with DVDAF. I had a bunch of dvds some that I can't remember off the top of my head.

Alright, yesterday's Gold Box was easy to avoid, as I already own all 6 seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I jumped on today's Gold Box, though, without hesitation. Six Feet Under for $59.99? Amazing deal.

HBO Week for me:
1/22/09 - The Wire - The Complete Series
1/23/09 - Deadwood - The Complete Series
1/25/09 - Six Feet Under - The Complete Series

I think I need help. I vow not to buy anything until next payday.
